This heterogeneous group of disorders, rarely observed in forensic pathological practice, poses consultative problems, as it may be difficult to distinguish between spontaneous disease-related changes and traumatic complications, and differentiate accidental from non-accidental trauma. The study is based on the records of two cases submitted for examination in order to determine the degree of health impairment. In both cases, a female infant was indicated as the injured person. A review of medical records, particularly medical imaging findings, provided evidence to conclude that the subdural hygromas diagnosed in both infants had a post-traumatic origin. On that basis, factors were selected for consideration in medicolegal assessment, including history of head injury, retinal haemorrhage, presence of other external and internal injuries suggesting battered or shaken baby syndromes, onset and rate of symptom aggravation, perinatal anamnesis, presence of arachnoid cysts, and diseases from the group of metabolic defects.","PeriodicalId":35709,"journal":{"name":"Archiwum Medycyny Sadowej i Kryminologii","volume":"19 1","pages":"70-81"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77703130","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of the study was to verify the prevalence of injuries involving different regions of the osteoarticular system in groups of victims of attempted suicide and fatal accidents according to the method proposed by Teh et al. The study material consisted of the findings of extended post-mortem examinations of 114 victims of falls from a height, which were conducted in the Department of Forensic Medicine in Lublin. The post-mortem results were compared with the data found in corresponding prosecutorial case files. The results of the study indicate a higher prevalence of osteoarticular injuries within the pelvis and lower limbs in the group of suicide victims, which correlates with the results reported by Teh et al. An analysis of injuries in different body regions in accordance with the reported method can be useful in determining the circumstances of falling from a height.</p>","PeriodicalId":35709,"journal":{"name":"Archiwum Medycyny Sadowej i Kryminologii","volume":"69 3","pages":"100-107"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.5114/amsik.2019.94227","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"37812968","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This may be done by concealing the drugs inside the body, so-called \"body packing\". This can lead to life-threatening conditions, mainly by leakage of the illegal substances in lethal amounts into the circulation system, which may cause fatal consequences due to acute drug overdose. Most of these cases present as sudden unexpected deaths. However, we present herein a case in which the death of an unidentified victim, which was notified as a case of seawater drowning in a non-suspicious manner, but later proved to be the death of a body packer as a result of drowning due to a morphine overdose. This case highlights the importance of investigating deaths even in unidentified bodies and the different presentations of fatal consequences of a body packer, which previously have not been described in literature.</p>","PeriodicalId":35709,"journal":{"name":"Archiwum Medycyny Sadowej i Kryminologii","volume":"69 3","pages":"129-136"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.5114/amsik.2019.94229","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"37812970","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The analysis of forces applied to the passenger's body in an accident estimated using such a simulation can serve as additional verification of opinions formulated by forensic experts in cases involving whiplash injuries. The study discusses the method of biomechanical simulation using the PC-Crash software as well as a neck injury criterion (NIC) and export of simulation results to determine NIC values. The above-mentioned method is to estimate the probability of whiplash injuries in a given case based on technical parameters of the crash. Such methods are complementary to forensic examinations and should be routinely included in comprehensive forensic expert opinions and technical reconstructions of traffic incidents. This additional method of analyzing the likelihood of whiplash injuries may serve as a basis for formulating conclusions in opinions implying a higher likelihood.</p>","PeriodicalId":35709,"journal":{"name":"Archiwum Medycyny Sadowej i Kryminologii","volume":"69 4","pages":"192-207"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"38071918","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In addition, the study addressed the possibilities of applying the presented results in the preparation of medicolegal opinions in cases provided for in Articles 158 and 160 of the PC with respect to evaluating the plausibility of inflicting such bodily injuries and causing moderate and severe health impairment. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study covered a total of 124 patients operated on in the then Clinic of Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery, Medical Academy of Lodz, in 1996-2001, because of fractures involving the inferior orbital wall including zygomatico-maxillo-orbital fractures (95 cases) and isolated orbital floor fractures (29 cases). The group was analyzed in a statistical and descriptive manner. RESULTS All the study patients (100%) with both types of fractures involving the inferior orbital wall exhibit symptoms and disorders which, pursuant to the PC, would constitute at least moderate, or possibly even severe, impairment to health. CONCLUSIONS Punches or kicks to the orbital region create a real danger of causing both types of orbital fracture under study, and resulting in at least moderate health impairment.","PeriodicalId":35709,"journal":{"name":"Archiwum Medycyny Sadowej i Kryminologii","volume":"8 3 1","pages":"1-39"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83522749","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
