{"title":"Developing Critical Reflection and Inquiry Among Teacher Candidates in an Elementary Mathematics Methods Course","authors":"Bilge Cerezci","doi":"10.3102/1682056","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.3102/1682056","url":null,"abstract":"This study explores how past and present experiences with mathematics interact as teacher candidates engage in a series of critical inquiry and reflection opportunities embedded in a mathematics methods course. The study involved 28 teacher candidates enrolled in an undergraduate education program within a large university. Data were collected through a series of written reflections and semi-structured interviews. The results reveal that the teacher candidates possess a wide variety of feelings towards mathematics, yet they are often influenced by how they were taught as students. Further, negative experiences with mathematics appear to be more prevalent than positive ones. Opportunities for critical inquiry and reflective thinking allowed the participants to develop new understandings about teaching and learning mathematics. Overall, the findings indicate that there are meaningful pedagogical opportunities for giving teacher candidates opportunities to revisit previous experience, construct new meaning, and challenge old assumptions about teaching and learning mathematics. 1 Cerezci and Chase: Developing Critical Reflection and Inquiry Published by Digital Commons@NLU, 2022","PeriodicalId":356396,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2021 AERA Annual Meeting","volume":"192 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124278508","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
{"title":"The Morning Meeting: Fostering a Participatory Democracy Begins With Youth in Public Education","authors":"Rebecca Tilhou","doi":"10.3102/1678653","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.3102/1678653","url":null,"abstract":"There is a faltering sense of democracy in America’s current political climate due to polarized opinions about leadership’s decisions and antagonistic political parties. John Dewey (1916) proposed that education is the place to foster democracy, as schools can provide a platform to actively engage students in authentic democratic experiences that will empower them to act democratically beyond the walls of the school. The democratic schools that emerged during the Free School Movement of the 1960s and 1970s embody Dewey’s philosophy, specifically with the shared governance occurring in their School Meetings. Unfortunately, American public education’s present preoccupation with standardization, proficiency scores, and accountability in the name of equality creates an authoritative, topdown approach to teaching and learning that is far removed from the lived experience of democracy. Nevertheless, democratic schools’ practices can offer insight for a space emerging in American public schools— the Morning Meeting. This paper proposes that the Morning Meeting is a 21stcentury space with great potential to become a platform in public education that fosters participatory, empowered democratic citizens by allowing youth to experience decision making, agency, activism, and the equality that citizens must continually challenge American government to uphold.
