However, the industrial metaverse, aimed at facilitating human–machine interaction and streamlining operational processes, is credited with transformative potential. Due to a fragmented and contested information landscape regarding the industrial metaverse, the future of this technology in business practice remains uncertain. In our study, we contribute to this debate by addressing the question of how the industrial metaverse will shape the operations of companies in the mid-term future. We developed 20 projections on the future of the industrial metaverse based on the current literature, and employed a Delphi approach using input from 33 selected experts to form a scenario for the industrial metaverse in the year 2033. We uncover realistic potentials and challenges that need to be addressed to make the industrial metaverse a reality. Accordingly, the industrial metaverse in 2033 is still not fully developed, which causes a divide between companies that already are using the industrial metaverse and companies that have not yet implemented it. In perspective, our findings provide insight into what needs to be considered for proactive industrial metaverse strategies.","PeriodicalId":35585,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Engineering Management Review","volume":"53 3","pages":"8-28"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-11-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/stamp/stamp.jsp?tp=&arnumber=10759762","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144299072","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We attribute this finding to firms initially using robots for process innovation before applying the technology to product innovation, corresponding to a strategy of cost leadership and market differentiation, respectively. With recent advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), newer generations of AI-enabled robots are increasingly capable of undertaking unstructured tasks, better at coordinating with humans and with each other. These robots confer greater operational flexibility that also first reduces costs through process innovation before beginning to promote product innovation via more sophisticated customization. However, we anticipate that this trend will result in a more compressed U-shaped relationship. This is because AI-enabled robots’ replacement of tasks with greater cognitive content will free up human efforts to engage in creativity-oriented tasks that might usher in product innovation sooner and thus shorten the transition from cost leadership to market differentiation. Firms can greatly benefit from making adequate preparations for this trend with a renewed sense of urgency, training their workers and managers in digital and business-related skills in order to maintain superior profitability.","PeriodicalId":35585,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Engineering Management Review","volume":"52 6","pages":"8-14"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-10-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143455303","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, its rapid expansion and development raise complex cybersecurity challenges. To address this issue, the goal of this article is to map the scholarly contributions of cybersecurity within the metaverse through a comprehensive bibliometric analysis and examine trends, gaps, and future research directions. Following the PRISMA guidelines, a broad range of documents is included in the analysis, and a bibliometric software package was used for science mapping. The results reveal a significant increase in publications and citations in recent years, with contributors from across the globe. The analysis of keywords and abstracts reveals core themes and the citation analysis identifies the most prominent sources and articles. The thematic analysis identifies the existing and emerging areas of research that remain to be explored in future studies.","PeriodicalId":35585,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Engineering Management Review","volume":"53 3","pages":"93-109"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-09-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/stamp/stamp.jsp?tp=&arnumber=10669015","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144299423","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
