Unfortunately, some idealistic assumptions on these network models have a substantial drawback on the practical relevance of the simulation results. On the other hand, many field trials and regular network operation have proven very good results in terms of both network quality and capacity when applying radio link options in tight frequency re-use. But there, systematic investigations are hardly feasible. Therefore, we present results of close-to-reality simulations of FH networks showing that FH, PC and DTX can largely improve system capacity in real non-homogeneous networks by as much as 200%. We systematically investigate both advanced frequency assignments at varying re-use and frequency assignments in cluster 1/spl times/3 and 1/spl times/1. Our results reveal some aspects contrasting widely spread views on implementing FH in real networks. From our investigations we deduct recommendations concerning the optimum approach of using frequency hopping, power control and discontinuous transmission in GSM networks.","PeriodicalId":355729,"journal":{"name":"Gateway to 21st Century Communications Village. Vehicles send small packets with equal transmitting power to a base station near the motorway using the slotted Aloha protocol. The positions of the vehicles are derived from real vehicle measurements. The measurements are split into three traffic conditions: queuing traffic with low vehicle speeds, heavy traffic with small average headway's, and light traffic. A DSR is used, and compared with a capture receiver. Success probabilities are calculated using a free space power loss model and Rice distribution. The success probabilities are used to analyse the throughput and delay characteristics for the slotted Aloha protocol in the uplink data stream, under different traffic conditions. The results show that the DSR benefits from the near-far effect. The total throughput for all vehicles is significantly higher than for the capture receiver.","PeriodicalId":355729,"journal":{"name":"Gateway to 21st Century Communications Village. VTC 1999-Fall. The video compression is based on the human visual model. The perceptual distortion model, the just-noticeable-distortion (JND), is applied to improve the subjective quality of compressed videos. The 3-D wavelet decomposition can remove spatial and temporal redundancy and provide scalability of the video quality. In order to conceal the errors which occurred under bad channel conditions, a novel slicing method and a joint source channel coding scenario that combines rate compatible punctured convolutional (RCPC) codes with cyclic redundancy check (CRC) and utilizes the distortion information to allocate convolutional coding rates are presented. A new performance index based on the JND is proposed and used to evaluate the overall performance at different signal-to-noise ratios (SNR). Our system uses the OQPSK modulation scheme.","PeriodicalId":355729,"journal":{"name":"Gateway to 21st Century Communications Village. VTC 1999-Fall. The benefit of this asymmetric signalling is that stations defer only for a possible collision with data, not for one with other signalling packets. This strategy is expected to increase throughput on a data-per-area basis compared with conventional protocols such as HIPERLAN and 802.11. A new method of analysis is also presented which lends itself towards simulation as it facilitates the use of relative distances (or losses) which include a shadowing effect.
