Some are restless because of decreased job and business opportunities, fear of being infected with disease, fear of losing the closed and beloved one, etc. This article tries to raise a Javanese community’s local wisdom, Slametan. Slametan is a form of local wisdom existing within Javanese people containing an action functioning to be a medium to request God to give safety. In principle, slametan rite is one of human actions to communicate with the Creator. Through the rite, human beings feel that what they ask will be granted. Human beings doing this are also sure and suggested that those having done the rite will get safety and protection effect. This belief will further create self confidence and the feeling of secure among them in working and continuing the life.","PeriodicalId":355129,"journal":{"name":"Jurnal Javanologi","volume":"72 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123454180","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Social media communication (SMC) in specific culture requires particular strategies related to cultural norms. Due to the limitation of cyber communication compares to direct communication, users of social media utilize available features in social media platforms to perform politeness. The strategies of Javanese netizens to perform Javanese politeness maxims in SMC are the main discussion in this study. The data were collected from five WhatsApp Groups (WAG) of Javanese adults of 20s-40s of age comprising 246 respondents. The conversation texts containing phatic talks in WAG were selected by observation method. Then, the conversational texts and communication icons were transcribed for contextual analysis. The result shows that the Javanese maxims of Kurmat (Respect), Tepa Selira (Tolerance), Andhap Asor (Humility), and Empan Papan (Self-Awareness) were utilized by Javanese netizens in performing politeness in virtual phatic communication. During the pandemic, tolerance maxim is the most frequently used to support each other. The maxim of humility is not obvious in virtual phatic communication. To this extent, Javanese politeness maxims are mitigating devices to establish social rapport in phatic communication. The Javanese ability in performing Javanese maxims as politeness devices is essential to avoid conflict and mitigate Face Threatening Act (FTA) since the Javanese community tends to create harmony in life known as Guyub Rukun.","PeriodicalId":355129,"journal":{"name":"Jurnal Javanologi","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124719857","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is a local wisdom created by the famous poet R.Ng.Ronggowarsito to introduce time and has been practiced by the people in Java Island for thousands of years. This knowledge is presumably inherited from generation to generation from the period of Medang or Mataram Kingdom (Hinduism) in the 9th century to the period of Mataram Sultanate in the17th century as a reference in the fields of agriculture economy, administration, and defense(military). Pranoto mongso has been officially used by Sri Susuhunan Pakoeboewono VII, the King of Surakarta, since June 22, 1856. It is based on solar rotation, which is similar to the Gregorian calendar. The application of pranoto mongso in the middle of climate change remains relevant as a general guideline for anticipation. For instance, Mangsa Rendeng (DecemberFebruary) is the months of storms, rains, floods, and landslides, while Kawolu (February-March) informs farmers to be prepared for plant diseases and plagues that affect humans and animals. Pranoto mongso is still limited to once-a-year rice farming. In order to anticipate climate change, pranoto mongso,as a global seasonal approach, has to be corrected using the updates and applications of climate prediction as well as the development of site-specific (or regional), dynamic cropping pattern and calendar. Water-efficient crop varieties and cultivation patterns are highly applicable for dealing with climate change. Pranoto mongso is preserved by the Javanese people, especially in Central Java Province, as global season guidelines.","PeriodicalId":355129,"journal":{"name":"Jurnal Javanologi","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126213307","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
