As conditions approach those which favor complete electrical breakdown, instabilities are assumed to develop and grow to some ‘point of no return’, which may be the key to understanding breakdown for the purpose of inhibiting it. The events occurring before breakdown have often been considered as “noise”, but almost certainly contain useful information. The electric field generation initiated by the turbulent flow of semi-insulating liquids through insulating tubes is the subject of a recent study [1] because of its practical importance where the coolant must be conveyed between metallic elements constrained to different potentials. The plasma then acts like a conductor and a process continues whereby the streamer grows across the gap. This paper serves to support this initiation picture in that it provides an estimate of the electric field, amount of injected charge, and joule heating in the vicinity of a needle tip which is the cathode in a needle-sphere electrode geometry. Kerr-effect electro-optical observations of the impulse field in the vicinity of the tip show a distortion from the geometrical field due to charge injection from the tip prior to any streamer development. The injected charge is not distributed evenly over the surface of the tip, but appears to reside mainly in a relatively narrow channel. Estimates reveal that the injected charge densities are on the order of 100 μC/cm3. The widely used materials, namely, silicone rubber, ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) rubber and epoxy resins are all hydrophobic initially thus suppressing leakage current, but only silicone rubber has shown the capacity to maintain its hydrophobicity for prolonged periods despite the accumulation of surface contamination. As the addition of a solid spacer to a compressed gas insulated system inevitably reduces the breakdown strength it is important to know how α and Ve are modified or if these are modified at all. These parameters can be determinated through the measurement of electron avalanches using the pulsed Townsend technique [1,2]. These measurements utilize parallel plate (stainless steel) electrodes (with spacing ℓ = .34 cm) immersed in nitrobenzene (with permittivity ε), and variable frequency with a peak voltage V0. However, it is not usually convenient, or in some cases feasible, to investigate transient processes by FDDS. A major advantage of time domain dielectric spectroscopy (TDDS) is that many types of transient phenomena can be studied. As a point in question, the use of TDDS for the investigation of the kinetic processes associated with the nucleation and growth of a second phase in an initial phase will be discussed.
