We argue that the proposed model could stand as an evaluation tool by the policymakers and regional and national authorities and a practical guide for investment planning by SMEs based on their emerging needs. The research methodology is based on the logical framework analysis and aims to achieve a comprehensive understanding of the design-reality gap in public funding. According to the findings, improvements in the design of state aids for R%D and environmental protection projects should include two main directions: (1) introduction of individual-specific measures in the initiatives that regard the operational framework of aids. (2) Reformation of the role of the financial system. Further analysis of measurements has confirmed that initiatives should be enacted to improve certain procedures relating to the operation of state aids additionally.","PeriodicalId":35412,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Globalisation and Small Business","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1504/IJGSB.2016.080376","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66886238","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In particular, we investigated the type of ownership that entrepreneurs would provide to different types of funders in exchange for investment. Our empirical results suggest that the more growth-oriented the firm, the more accepting the entrepreneur of funders taking ownership that allows a strategic role in the company. Conversely, entrepreneurs in non-growth-oriented firms favour investors that will finance the operations without exerting power and influencing decision-making. Further, entrepreneurs in firms that are about to cease operations, generally due to weak economic conditions, are as likely to accept strategic ownership as high-growth-oriented firms. This study contributes to the literature by confirming the link between growth orientation and ownership structure in small firms, and by highlighting variations in entrepreneurial acceptance of different types of investor ownership.","PeriodicalId":35412,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Globalisation and Small Business","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1504/IJGSB.2016.080379","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66886308","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The nature of competitive pressures and firms' responses to those pressures vary across countries, regions, sectors and firm size. While there is a robust literature on the strategies used by large firms to manage competitive pressures, it is unclear how competitive pressures affect small and microenterprises (SMEs) and their strategic response to the challenges posed by globalisation. Using qualitative and quantitative evidence gathered from over 100 SMEs during a 10-year period, this paper provides insight into how small manufacturing firms in the United States respond to competitive pressures. The paper reveals that the responses have been mixed and that a majority of SMEs do not have strategic toolkits for managing competitive pressures. Using logit regressions, the paper identifies firm age and size as the most significant determinants of the ability of SMEs to survive adverse competitive shocks.","PeriodicalId":35412,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Globalisation and Small Business","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1504/IJGSB.2016.078817","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66886105","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It permits to evaluate the effect of several decisions on the financial leverage, making them more aware. The sample is composed of all Italian medium-sized companies belong to the manufacturing food and beverage sector, extracted by Amadeus. The sample is composed of 4,705 firms, and the observed period was 2010-2011-2012-2013. It emerged a moderate correlation between liabilities and fixed assets. In addition, fixed assets have not been properly funded by permanent capital, creating probable financial tensions. In addition, we verified the company's attitude to repay debts, thanks to its core business: it emerged a strong and a moderate correlation between liabilities and revenues, decreasing each year; indeed, the core business, thanks to its attitude in generating cash, is useful to pay debts.","PeriodicalId":35412,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Globalisation and Small Business","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1504/IJGSB.2016.078788","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66886015","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Outsourcing can bring tremendous benefits to organisations, but if an outsourcing decision is not precise and factors influencing the outsourcing decision are not considered, it can also bring irreparable damage. This study is to identify and rank the factors affecting the outsourcing on the basis of strategic perspective in supply chains of small and medium manufacturing enterprises. In this study, the factors influencing the strategic outsourcing decisions were determined on the basis of prior literature. In this approach, the refinement of the parameters using factor analysis was conducted to determine the most important sub-indices, and then due to the multidimensional nature of these factors, the analytic hierarchy process technique used for the weighting of factors and fuzzy additive ratio assessment method are used for ranking sub-criteria factors influencing strategic outsourcing. The findings show that the 'quality' is the most important factor and 'management agent' is the factor with the lowest importance.","PeriodicalId":35412,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Globalisation and Small Business","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1504/IJGSB.2016.078813","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66886083","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These SMEs play a major role in the Thai economy and yet little is known about their innovation management for NPD. Inspired by a relevant existing theoretical model, the current exploratory research collects data from 20 case organisations. Results reveal that: (1) top executives are mainly responsible for NPD projects; (2) barriers to developing products include lack of technology, financial resources, workforce's skills, and restrictive local laws; (3) to overcome these barriers and also to enhance their competitiveness, SMEs mainly adopt networking, resource-based, knowledge-based, open innovation, and technology buy/make strategies. We discuss these findings, provide implications for theory and practice, and suggest future research directions.","PeriodicalId":35412,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Globalisation and Small Business","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1504/IJGSB.2016.078821","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66886164","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To ensure sustainable market success of entrepreneurs, it can be advisable to cooperate with existing value-adding structures, such as dynamic networks. The latter adapt flexibly to changing market situations and high competition on a medium-term scale. In this paper, the authors evaluate the benefits of temporary network integration on the basis of commonly gained profits. For this purpose, they develop a mixed-integer linear programming model, which is extended to analyse the integration of one or more facilities of a start-up company. Cooperation requires that entrepreneurs and network managers coordinate the availability of their facilities and capacities, their operations and the material flows to meet the given demand. In this context, the authors do not only consider decisions about the advantage of integration, but they also calculate two different threshold levels determining those product quantities that can be maximally fed into the network by the new partner. Finally, a numerical study is presented. Structural relationships and optimal solutions are depicted for a small problem instance. A scenario analysis with randomly generated data is used to show that satisfying solutions can be obtained for problem instances with realistic settings in acceptable computation times.","PeriodicalId":35412,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Globalisation and Small Business","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1504/IJGSB.2016.076461","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66885995","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The competition and the size of the SMEs are used to measure the environmental factors. This research uses field survey data collected from SMEs operating in Bandung city. Three-stage approach is used in this research. At the first stage, this research applies the data envelopment analysis (DEA) to estimate technical efficiency. At the second stage, this research employs the slack-based approach to estimate the effect of environmental factors on the technical efficiency. At the last stage, the technical efficiency is estimated using the DEA with the adjusted inputs derived from the second stage. This research finds that a significant improvement of the technical efficiency occurs after taking into account the competition and the size of the SMEs. This research also reveals that competition only affects significantly the capital slack. Further, the size of the SMEs affects significantly the slacks of all input variables.","PeriodicalId":35412,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Globalisation and Small Business","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1504/ijgsb.2016.076447","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66886335","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this way, the paper aims to understand how these two topics are interrelated and mutually dependent. To achieve this purpose, we used a qualitative and exploratory approach based on eight SMEs (cases) in Portugal, simultaneously considered as family businesses. The results showed that the management and organisational culture of family SMEs are greatly determined by the owner-manager. More precisely, we conclude that in the cultural behaviour found in the cases studied, despite the very particular characteristics of these family-structured firms, the six dimensions of organisational culture proposed by Hofstede are present, i.e., this business sector is ruled by unique values and characteristics. Some theoretical and practical implications are also discussed.","PeriodicalId":35412,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Globalisation and Small Business","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1504/ijgsb.2016.076442","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66886292","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
