The importance of rational, sustainable, and efficient management of resources in the production process of the Brazilian sugar-energy industry is remarkable, mainly related to water use. In this context, the present paper aimed to analyze, in the last decade, the consumption of water in the productive process of Vale do Paraná S/A Álcool e Açúcar plant, in addition to elucidating the technologies implemented in the industrial area that contributed to the reduction of consumption. The methodology adopted consisted of obtaining data and information from bibliographic researches, technical bulletins, and field visits. The sugar-energy plant showed a 34.88% reduction in water consumption in the last decade, obtaining 0.86 m3 ton-1 in 2012 and 0.56 m3 ton-1 in 2021 of processed sugarcane, which can be particularly important in intense periods of drought, such as those experienced in recent years. The main technologies that contributed to this reduction were: the dry cleaning of sugarcane; the use of closed circuits; condensate recovery; water reuse; and the implementation of a flow rate measurement system. The company reached a lower consumption than required for the year 2024, but there is no limit to reduction. In the case of the plant under study, it was observed that special attention should be given to industrial effluents, mainly vinasse, with the possible implementation of more treatment steps before application in the field as fertigation.","PeriodicalId":352759,"journal":{"name":"Revista Brasileira de Ciências Ambientais","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135157354","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the sources of entry of these compounds into the environment is the disposal of expired or unused medicines. However, it is necessary to understand how the population recognize this problem to subsidize management actions on this theme. Mitigating and/or reducing the entry of pharmaceuticals into the environment is one of the main lines of action of the ecopharmacovigilance (EPV). Thus, the present study aimed to analyze the environmental habits of medicines disposal by Brazilian web users, in accordance with current legislation, as well as the environmental impacts resulting from pharmacological contamination, during the COVID-19 pandemic, besides evaluating the implementation of the EPV concept. An online questionnaire was developed on the Google Forms platform with 26 questions, and was disseminated for six months on social networks, websites, and emails. The sampling method used was the convenience. The results indicated the predominance of consumption of the pharmacological group associated with COVID-19 treatment. In addition, it was observed that most participants discarded medicines for human (62.0%) and veterinary (33.6%) use in common waste. Moreover, there was a concern among respondents regarding the occurrence of pharmaceuticals in the environment and their implications in different environmental matrices as well as in human health. Disseminating the current Brazilian legislation and improving the effectiveness of reverse logistics programs, as well as making society aware of the impacts associated with pharmaceuticals can help mitigate this environmental problem.","PeriodicalId":352759,"journal":{"name":"Revista Brasileira de Ciências Ambientais","volume":"161 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135156821","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For this, we downloaded the air quality reports from websites of environmental agencies that, in accordance with their laws, are obligated to publish them. After reading, it was pointed out: the publication formats, if geographic factors were addressed in air quality analyses, the legal bases for the diagnosis, as well as which of them were more tolerant with air pollution, and the frequency they published their data and their justifications. Next, a comparison of the annual average and maximum in 24 hours PM10 records was performed. Therefore, we found that São Paulo presented the most complete document and Buenos Aires the least comprehensive. Rio de Janeiro exceeded PM10 tolerance limits several times, and Montevideo has the least polluted air quality. Only Buenos Aires did not address geographic factors as a form of analysis or suggestions. Finally, it is suggested that Porto Alegre and Buenos Aires should increase their data collection networks. The poor performance of some cities make it difficult to accomplish the task to transform them in more sustainable and healthy places.","PeriodicalId":352759,"journal":{"name":"Revista Brasileira de Ciências Ambientais","volume":"73 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136003679","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to be able to relate these compartments, monitoring data are necessary, such as the case of the Ribeirão Concórdia watershed, in Lontras, Santa Catarina (SC). This study aimed to evaluate the behavior and the correlation between rainfall-runoff and phreatic surface levels with chemical species concentrations in surface and groundwaters in a rural watershed. Data of 3 piezometers installed in the hydrographic basin were used: PZ2127, PZ3, and PZMC. The piezometers are equipped with hydrostatic level sensors. A fluviometric station is located adjacent to PZ2127 (near the catchment outlet). Concentrations of anions and carbon forms were analyzed in water samples (river and piezometers) taken every 2-3 weeks, from January 14, 2012, to December 23, 2016, totaling 103 samples. Correlations between daily data were verified using Pearson’s correlation coefficient (ρ). The river presented a dilution effect, while the adjacent piezometer had the highest average concentrations of chemical species. Precipitation and chemical species concentration showed no seasonal pattern, with events/peaks throughout the year. Higher concentrations of carbon forms were found in the summer, while lower concentrations were observed in the winter. Positive correlations between concentrations of anions and carbon forms in surface and groundwaters were obtained.","PeriodicalId":352759,"journal":{"name":"Revista Brasileira de Ciências Ambientais","volume":"78 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124468279","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The streamflow time series were used divided into two periods: 1931 to 2005 and 2006 to 2017, for calibration and verification, respectively. The annual series was standardized, and by the wavelet transform, it was decomposed into two bands plus the residue for each Base Posts (BP) for later reconstruction. Then an autoregressive model per band and residue was made. The projection was obtained by adding the autoregressive models. For performance evaluation, a qualitative analysis of the cumulative probability distribution of the projected years and the likelihood were made. The model identified the probability distribution function of the projected years and obtained likelihood greater than 1 in most of the SIN regions, indicating that this methodology can capture the medium-range variability.","PeriodicalId":352759,"journal":{"name":"Revista Brasileira de Ciências Ambientais","volume":"2014 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127518847","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A redução de vazamentos é claramente uma parte importante da gestão sustentável na indústria da água, devendo seus impactos serem avaliados em um objetivo mais amplo de proteção ambiental. Apresenta-se, neste trabalho, uma avaliação ambiental e energética do sistema de abastecimento de água da cidade de Caruaru, localizada no Nordeste do Brasil, a fim de determinar quais fatores são responsáveis pelos maiores impactos ambientais. Este estudo é um dos primeiros na América Latina a avaliar os impactos ambientais de um sistema de abastecimento de água. Os dados primários adotados para a elaboração do inventário foram fornecidos pela concessionária de água, sendo a modelagem e análise realizada por meio do programa SimaPro 8.0®. Foram analisados quatro cenários com diferentes níveis de perda de água, sendo que o cenário C0 foi representado com as condições reais do sistema, enquanto os demais consideraram índices hipotéticos. A análise das contribuições dos processos demonstrou que o consumo de eletricidade dos conjuntos motor-bomba das adutoras de água representou o maior impacto ambiental em todos os cenários. O cenário mais eficiente resultaria em uma redução de 52% na emissão de gases de efeito estufa, demonstrando que o aumento da eficiência hidráulica das redes de distribuição representa uma oportunidade significativa para reduzir os impactos ambientais dos processos.","PeriodicalId":352759,"journal":{"name":"Revista Brasileira de Ciências Ambientais","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116674762","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aims to verify if the phenomenon of UHI occurs in the municipality of Três Rios – RJ, a small sized city. This study included the use of mobile transect, through pre-established data collection points/stations. Five data collection points were selected, from which one was included in a rural area, one in the Parque Natural Municipal (Urban Park, within the city), and three points within the urbanized area. The equipment used was the Brunton® / ADC PRO handheld weather station. The data collection period ranged from September 2018 until July 2019, which included the four seasons. Measurements were taken at 6:00, 12:00, 15:00, 18:00, and 21:00h, in alternate days during the study period. Considering the temperature measurements, two different indicators of thermal variability were used. Strong magnitude heat islands were detected, taking into consideration the relevant variation of maximum temperatures observed in the urban area when compared to the rural area. The results indicate the most affected populations to be the ones located within urban areas, mostly individuals under socioeconomic vulnerability. The results obtained can be used as support for the development of strategies to minimize the thermal discomfort to populations exposed to the influence of higher magnitude urban heat islands.","PeriodicalId":352759,"journal":{"name":"Revista Brasileira de Ciências Ambientais","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125378809","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thermal stress can amplify or mask the effects of metals on aquatic organisms. This study aims to carry out a systematic review on the effects of temperature rises due to climate changes on the toxicity of metals for freshwater organisms. Searches were made in different electronic databases and article selection was based on the following inclusion criteria: concordance with the question of a systematic review; publication in English, Spanish, and Portuguese between 1960 and 2020; and the use of standard methodology. Forty-three articles were included, which were classified with respect to the year and country of publication, test-organisms and metals studied, temperatures tested, and the effects observed. In 80% of the studies analyzed, a temperature rise was responsible for increasing the toxicity of metals for the aquatic organisms. The temperatures studied contemplated the temperature rise predicted by the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change at the end of the 21st century. Brazil stood out among the countries for having the greatest number of research studies in this area, although there is still the need for an increase in studies in tropical climate regions. Based on the literature review, it was shown that the metals most studied were copper and cadmium and the test-organisms most used in the research projects were fish. The information obtained from ecotoxicological studies is essential to predict the effects and prevent the risks associated with the metal contamination of aquatic ecosystems due to climate changes.","PeriodicalId":352759,"journal":{"name":"Revista Brasileira de Ciências Ambientais","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-11-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134584584","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
