Such displacements originate multiple contacts, which, in turn, cause changes that create experiences of doubt and uncertainty. Displacements and their consequent experiences assume extreme visibility in travel literature and take on a deeper hue when translation takes place. The present study is based on a translated version of a travel book written by two English brothers, who visited the archipelago of the Azores in 1838. The Portuguese translation, dated a century after the original book was published, and edited with the purpose of marking the one hundred and tenth anniversary of the authors’ arrival on the Azores, evinces how identity moves between unclear borderlines. Besides the authors’ and the translator’s voices, we can find the voice of two cultural traditions, two historical periods and geographical spaces in dialogue. The line separating worlds and words and the effort to make sense of them show how identity is in permanent formation and transformation.","PeriodicalId":352559,"journal":{"name":"Modernity, Frontiers and Revolutions","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125556220","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper raises the question of the role of delimitation in the relationship between the-we and the-others, and its relevance to architecture and human society. According to Alberti, the edificatory harmony (concinnitas) consists of numerus, finitio and collocatio (number, delimitation and disposition) that can be embodied through specific essential characteristics. Passing the test of time, both in architecture and in the human dimension, the always-delimited harmony has revealed the ability to appear, with intersubjective and universal character. By constructing an inside and an outside, the two sides of the boundary, which relates the parts to the whole, the delimitation (finitio) makes it possible to embrace an internal reality and, from an openness, to potentiate it to the external reality, firstly stranger, but gradually articulated in a inclusive manner. The actual communication argues that in everything it is necessary to know the limits (frontiers) to be able to achieve the change. In conclusion, either we consent the controlled evolution regarding reforms, or we expose ourselves uncontrollably to revolutions, which are radically contrary to the established status quo.","PeriodicalId":352559,"journal":{"name":"Modernity, Frontiers and Revolutions","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125421309","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The historical background in which they act, that of modernity, leads us to ask questions related to eras and to shifting paradigms, given the promotion of financial and commercial practices in different European regions and their interconnection, and in a much bigger and systematic extension at intercontinental and planetary level. Hence the highlighting of novelties and continuities in the specific dynamics of merchants and in their inclination to be included in social groups, as well as in the techniques and the way they can promote new social and cultural practices as well as a new mindset.","PeriodicalId":352559,"journal":{"name":"Modernity, Frontiers and Revolutions","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132019199","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

That is, their works are a direct addition to a possible real construction of their imaginary. Through these works, we observe the constructive capacities showing the high flexibility of the authors regarding contemporary architectural features: the influence of the former on interior spatiality and the influence of the second in urban rehabilitation. We consider that Piranesi and Matta-Clark's architectural training may have contributed to the physical knowledge present in the gravitational idealisation of their productions and in how they developed an architectural analysis linked to artistic practice. The apparent illusion existing in both gives rise to an effective construction based on a rigorous methodology in which all of their drawings have a common part that is advantageous for the learning of architecture. Piranesi and Matta-Clark’s studies demonstrate this methodology in the study of ruin and demolition, thus providing architecture with new data. The two architects and artists were associated in this paper since, in both, the ruin and demolition become an imaginary construction. This analysis seeks a consolidated and beneficial culture in which the relevant references are essential for the teaching of architecture.","PeriodicalId":352559,"journal":{"name":"Modernity, Frontiers and Revolutions","volume":"109 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131475325","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This grandiose church-like building was officially inaugurated on the first weekend in December 2017, as the intellectual and spiritual – geistige und geistliche – centre of the University of Leipzig. This article will consider the palimpsestic characteristics of the Paulinum, particularly about two aspects. The first being that the Paulinum inherited some of the inventory and traditions from its predecessor, the medieval Church of St. Paul, which was destroyed by the GDR leadership in 1968. While the second is that new layers of memories and points of reference that have been added because of the struggle against and the overcoming of socialist oppression during the German reunification. Finally, the building of the Paulinum can also be seen as an attempt to undo some of the ills perpetrated during the GDR era.","PeriodicalId":352559,"journal":{"name":"Modernity, Frontiers and Revolutions","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126585045","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This interest is partly due to the comfortable constructive rigour that an industrial building must respect to perform the functions that the machinery has imposed over the time. When the machines give their space, due to obsolescence or degradation of the building, this space begins a relationship with the \"void\". The action of the re-appropriation of spaces follows an even more universal law – the law of vacuum: What was once full, if it becomes empty, soon something else takes its place because nature abhors vacuum. The concept of work and creativity is associated with the idea of industrial space. The present text aims to briefly analyse the evolution of the concept of work related to an industrial area, which will lead us to the analysis of some examples of the redevelopment of industrial spaces in Lisbon: Lx Factory and Manutenção Militar. After a brief excursus on the history of the construction of the two industrial complexes mentioned above, we will question the correctness and coherence of some choices made. Furthermore, we will ask ourselves whether we can talk about modernising the identity of industrial-productive work 1 .","PeriodicalId":352559,"journal":{"name":"Modernity, Frontiers and Revolutions","volume":"159 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115766671","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

I assume that a revolution is an act whereby the existing social order – nomos – a sense of understanding of the world is disturbed. Revolution results in disruption of its structure, and thus it entails the loss of sense of control and domestication in the world. Revolutionary disruption of nomos causes moral panic and brings people to a state of anomie, that is, lack of regulation in the normative ordering system. I argue that the effect of moral panic is often a counterrevolution or a conservative revolution constituting an attempt to restore the undermined and contested social and political order. Conservative revolution is, therefore, an attempt to nullify the progressive revolution aiming at freedom and democracy and to restore the original status quo. Further, I argue that this tendency in conservative revolutions is the main reason for the failure of prodemocratic revolutions. In the text, I will reflect on the conditions to be fulfilled so that the progressive revolution bringing in the moral panic would not produce a \"conservative effect\" and, as a result, bring counter-revolutionary authoritarianism. I will also consider what a revolution in the era of the reign of the biocapital may be.","PeriodicalId":352559,"journal":{"name":"Modernity, Frontiers and Revolutions","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114715388","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The way we think about art in the modern age may be derived from the Kantian “beauty without concept”. Beautiful art is the work of the genius, who creates a work of art that is valuable in itself and is admired in museums by the public. That which I call here “the modern paradigm of art” is based on an absence: the non-conceptuality of the beautiful, i.e., the fact that objective qualities cannot define the beautiful. This absence establishes originality as the essential requirement for modern art and creates the possibility for artists to push the boundaries of the modern paradigm. Thus, the 20thcentury sees the appearance of strategies for overriding or substituting originality. The artist withdraws from behind her work, and the work of art is no longer an unapproachable object with an aura, just as the museum is also no longer the temple of the arts. But do these experiments overcome the frontiers of art’s modern paradigm? And, more generally, can this paradigm be overcome at all? Here I deduct three elements of the modern paradigm of art from the idea of “beauty without concept”: (1) the original artist, who is seen as a genius, (2) the work of art with an aura, and (3) the museum as the temple of art. Then I present how artists, based on the requirement of originality, worked on dismantling the frontiers of the modern paradigm.","PeriodicalId":352559,"journal":{"name":"Modernity, Frontiers and Revolutions","volume":"87 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131852925","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
