In this paper, first the structure and operation of a 7-level CHB is reviewed and the general SHE concept for this type of inverter is studied briefly. Then, the proposed fault-tolerant switching strategy for a CHB with one faulty switch is presented. Finally, simulation results are provided to validate the proposed modulation technique.","PeriodicalId":352005,"journal":{"name":"2014 Power and Energy Conference at Illinois (PECI)","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133044215","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Solar simulators are used to emulate the AM0 spectrum for ground testing of the solar cells before the space application is launched. A low-cost solar simulator was designed using LEDs for the visible spectrum and halogen lamps for the infrared spectrum. A design procedure is provided to determine the intensity and geometry of the lights needed to meet spectral match and spatial uniformity requirements. The presented solar simulator design is adequate for testing GaInP2/GaAs/Ge triple-junction solar cells intended for use in a cube satellite application and has a significantly lower cost than commercially-available solar simulators.","PeriodicalId":352005,"journal":{"name":"2014 Power and Energy Conference at Illinois (PECI)","volume":"80 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131981492","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, its effect on the modeling of Diesel Generator's excitation system during island operation (i.e. local network) is studied. The simulation results performed in the Matlab/Simulink using IEEE type ST2A excitation model suggests that in the local network with mainly inductive loads the UEL is ineffective and it can be neglected in the modeling.","PeriodicalId":352005,"journal":{"name":"2014 Power and Energy Conference at Illinois (PECI)","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117287245","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These systems use Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs), devices which can measure the voltage and current within the power system. One kind of PMU is the Frequency Disturbance Recorder (FDR), which measures voltage magnitude, frequency, and phase angle at 10 data samples per second. These measurements are taken at the 120V level, resulting in a relatively low-cost, rapidly deployable alternative to other PMUs. This paper presents an approach to distribution system event detection and classification using voltage data obtained from FDRs installed around the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). This model-free classification of events will use pattern recognition techniques to help identify features that may be unique to these disturbances. Analysis will be applied to a sliding window of voltage data, and the results from each window are compared against one another in order to help determine what kind of event occurred.","PeriodicalId":352005,"journal":{"name":"2014 Power and Energy Conference at Illinois (PECI)","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131156677","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A simplified model for a battery is first developed, along with a state equation model of the system. Optimal control is used to minimize the difference between the actual battery power and the given reference power. The battery is connected to the grid through a buck converter, and the optimal control solution is used to calculate the necessary duty cycle to achieve the desired results. Inequality constraints are added to ensure that the simulation is a realistic model of the behavior of a battery. The control strategy is also demonstrated experimentally with a battery and sample grid system.","PeriodicalId":352005,"journal":{"name":"2014 Power and Energy Conference at Illinois (PECI)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125545197","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, a Self Adaptive Harmony Search algorithm (SAHSA) is proposed to solve the network reconfiguration problem in order to minimize the active and reactive power loss. SAHSA uses a stochastic search and local search instead of a gradient search. Forward and Backward Substitution Power Flow method is used to solve the radial distribution system. The proposed approach is tested on standard IEEE 33-bus and 69-bus radial distribution systems. The results are compared with Music Based Harmony Search Algorithm (MBHSA) and it is observed that the proposed method performed well in terms of the quality of solution.","PeriodicalId":352005,"journal":{"name":"2014 Power and Energy Conference at Illinois (PECI)","volume":"66 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133799334","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Each phase of the proposed converter includes four controlled power switches and it is able to generate five levels. The most significant characteristics of the proposed converter are: (i) reduced number of semiconductor devices, while keeping a high number of levels at the output side of each phase, (ii) no need to control DC-link capacitor voltage as in NPC and flying capacitor topologies, and (iii) reduced semiconductor losses. The principle of operation, modulation technique, and modeling of the proposed converter are presented in this paper. The proposed configuration is simulated and validated experimentally.","PeriodicalId":352005,"journal":{"name":"2014 Power and Energy Conference at Illinois (PECI)","volume":"75 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134068572","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For further analysis control implementation on these types of systems a suitable linearized model is needed. Due to the disturbances, the system has a wide range of operating points. Therefore, linearized models on different operating regimes will be needed. Finding the best operating points, to linearize the nonlinear system at, can improve the accuracy of the linearization as well as the stability of the system. This paper propose a new automatic algorithm to indicate the suitable operating points and linearized models.","PeriodicalId":352005,"journal":{"name":"2014 Power and Energy Conference at Illinois (PECI)","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123517397","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
