Norway’s system has capabilities for providing flexibility for responding to variations in wind and solar generation and consumption. The variability of residual load in Germany over a recent multi-year period is analysed in terms of instant shortfalls and cumulative shortfalls of electricity supply that would arise if Germany’s renewable generation increases to match its consumption in recent years on average. It is found that interactions with Norway’s system cannot remove any large part of Germany’s need for flexible generation capacity to cover instant shortfalls, but can significantly reduce the cumulative amount of electricity over time that needs to be supplied from such flexible capacities. The capabilities and constraints in Norway’s system for providing such flexibility are analyzed, as are economic implications for Norway.","PeriodicalId":35178,"journal":{"name":"WIT Transactions on Ecology and the Environment","volume":"85 22","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138604535","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Through the adoption of BIM technologies, the construction industry can enhance decision-making and communication capabilities throughout the life cycle of construction. Recognizing the evolving landscape of the construction industry, domestic and overseas governments are actively formulating and implementing policies to promote BIM adoption. However, practitioners in public ordering authorities lack sufficient understanding of BIM. Moreover, there is a deficiency in well-established frameworks for the effective utilization and review of final BIM deliverables in BIM procurement processes. In order to address these issues, this paper conducted a comprehensive investigation of BIM-related education curriculums and focus group interviews (FGI) with BIM experts from public ordering authorities. The primary objective is to examine the challenges and considerations associated with BIM education for owners. Based on these, we proposed a public education framework for the development of BIM education curricula that aligns with the current government policies and practices in South Korea as a result. This study is expected to provide a valuable foundation for the development of standardized education curricula tailored to stakeholders in the construction domain, particularly for owners.","PeriodicalId":35178,"journal":{"name":"WIT Transactions on Ecology and the Environment","volume":"1 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138601511","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Consequently, these countries miss out on the benefits of MEA technology. This paper highlights challenges faced by the Zambian aviation sector in its quest to introduce the MEA technology. In addition, the paper makes recommendations that address the identified challenges. The gathered information could help to find solutions to the challenges in the direction of reducing environmental pollution, promotion of local aviation industry’s growth, safety and reducing aircraft maintenance costs. The research is conducted through a literature review and interviews with members of staff of selected aviation operators, approved aircraft maintenance organisations (AMOs), aviation training school, the Civil Aviation Authority, and Zambia Airports Corporation Limited. In addition, the working environment of the mentioned institutions were also considered to ascertain their readiness to support the MEA technology. It was discovered that most of the challenges involved aviation training institutions, aircraft operators and the AMOs. It is therefore recommended that the aviation training institutions be adequately equipped with training aids and materials to embark on capacity building of members of staff. Further, the AMOs should also be equipped with MEA technology diagnostic equipment. In addition, the aircraft operators should also invest in a holistic MEA human resource training.","PeriodicalId":35178,"journal":{"name":"WIT Transactions on Ecology and the Environment","volume":"35 5","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138602602","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Depending on the ship type and navigation areas, these regulations become ever stricter and different technical and operational measures are being investigated to increase ship energy efficiency. For merchant ships energy efficiency is regularly expressed as a ratio of CO 2 emission and transport work (denoted as a benefit for society (BS)), while some fleets, for instance the fishing one, remain under investigation. There are some studies considering the fuel use intensity index as a relevant quantity of fishing effort which can be further used to express the environmental friendliness of fishing vessels, but there is no unified solution. Environmental problems in marine fishery development are very important nowadays and in order to adopt the low-carbon and green development concept, it is necessary to evaluate the current status of the fishing fleet. This work deals with the formulation of the extended emission index (EEI) for fishing vessels which is formulated as a ratio of emissions generated by the ship’s power system and amount of catch which is considered as BS. Adding SO x and NO x emissions to usually calculated amounts of CO 2 emissions represents an extension of existing approaches in the formulation of energy efficiency indices for ships, while expression of the benefit for society is adapted to the fisheries sector. An illustration of the newly introduced index is done by taking into account a purse seiner operating in the Adriatic Sea. The work also discusses the applicability of EEI for fishing vessels powered by alternative fuels as well as relevant sensitivity studies.","PeriodicalId":35178,"journal":{"name":"WIT Transactions on Ecology and the Environment","volume":"3 26","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138603663","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, low collection coverage, operational inefficiencies, lack of suitable disposal and treatment facilities are responsible for unsatisfactory SWM. Consequently, communities faced with improper hygiene and energy inefficiencies have resorted to recovered energy from waste. This study used the institutional analysis and development framework on the waste recovery approach to review the model for achieving energy sufficiency from household solid waste in the Douala IV Municipality, Littoral Region of Cameroon. It specifically analysed waste and energy benefits alongside the potentials of municipal SWM. The study, (i) identified and classified household waste generation; (ii) assessed household energy supply sources; (iii) analysed benefits derived from biogas generation, and (iv) assessed environmental status based on environmental hygiene and sanitation. Households were randomly selected, participatory rural appraisal (PRA) tool and registers from health centres were employed to obtain relevant data, and this was complemented by field observation. Collected data were analysed using descriptive statistics of simple percentages presented in tables and figures and inferential statistics of student’s t-test. The result indicated that energy recovered from household waste, improved clean energy supplies; generated employment; increased income; created waste recovery value chain; clean environment, regeneration of wetland; reduction in mosquitoes and water borne diseases. Student t-test revealed a significant difference (t = −3.08, P = 0.006) of household energy supply before and after recovering energy from household waste. Engaging in municipal SWM has enabled 8.5% of communities to improve their livelihood, enhance energy efficiency, good health and decent environment. The study recommends municipal authorities to involve communities in the management of solid waste.","PeriodicalId":35178,"journal":{"name":"WIT Transactions on Ecology and the Environment","volume":"22 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138603806","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Micro-hydro generation has the potential to provide electricity to these communities, but the process of setting up a micro-hydro generation system can be complex and difficult to manage. The present study proposes to address this issue by developing a web platform that provides all the necessary tools and resources for setting up and managing a micro-hydro generation system in rural areas. The platform uses hydraulic potential calculations based on river flow and head to select the most suitable turbine for the community conditions. This methodology has been validated, and a user-friendly graphical interface has been developed to enter the relevant information on hydraulic potential. The platform performs these calculations using Python, proposing a design for the selected turbine that ensures the best performance. One of the key features of the platform is its ability to act as a hub for information exchange between rural communities and experts, promoting a more informed and effective approach to micro-hydro generation. To illustrate the effectiveness of the platform, a case study of the rural communities of Guayllabamba has been presented. This demonstrates how the platform can obtain a suitable Francis turbine for microgeneration that can provide electricity for housing, agriculture, and improve the quality of life of the community. The results show the components that will be included in the beta version of the web platform, which will facilitate the selection of the most suitable turbine for micro-hydro generation, design implementation, and estimation of the hydraulic potential of a given area based on input parameters and satellite imagery. This effort represents a crucial step towards promoting sustainable energy solutions in rural areas and contributing to a more sustainable energy future for the country.","PeriodicalId":35178,"journal":{"name":"WIT Transactions on Ecology and the Environment","volume":"77 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138604509","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, energy retrofit can reduce energy consumption while improving energy performance, and the building’s overall image can also be changed. However, as it is for new buildings, governmental organisations should control and audit the building energy retrofit process to provide the requirements and keep the standard. Recently, energy retrofit gained popularity worldwide with the increasing interest in ‘sustainable development’ and ‘energy efficiency’ issues due to the existing building’s role in energy consumption. In this case, different countries have developed policies based on their situations. For instance, since Europe has numerous old buildings, regulatory processes, incentives, and public awareness drive the retrofitting process. On the other hand, in the USA, companies offer energy-efficient retrofit solutions to building owners or operators due to the characteristics of the market-based driven energy retrofit process. However, Turkey has general laws on energy efficiency in buildings, such as the Energy Efficiency Law and the National Energy Efficiency Plan, as the building energy retrofit process is a brand-new topic. Thus, there is a need to develop detailed directives and incentives to manage the process efficiently. This paper discusses regulatory approaches and policies used for the building energy retrofit process in the European Union and the USA to develop proposals for the Turkish construction industry. First, it provides a comparative analysis of the policy-based process of building energy retrofit. For this purpose, the official building energy retrofit regulations are examined, pros and cons are discussed. Finally, a regulatory approach is proposed for the Turkish construction industry for building energy retrofit by investigating the challenges and opportunities.","PeriodicalId":35178,"journal":{"name":"WIT Transactions on Ecology and the Environment","volume":"31 22","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138601472","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main aim of the AUDIT2MEASURE (leading business towards climate neutrality by speeding up the uptake of energy efficiency measures from the energy audits) project is to support companies in the uptake of audit measures necessary to reduce the energy consumption supporting their energy transition. AUDIT2MEASURE will develop and implement a new engagement strategy (called ‘Audit2Action’) to put into action the opportunities emerging from energy audits. To this aim, in the first part of the project, barriers to the adoption of energy saving measures will be identified and subsequently solutions to overcome such barriers will be developed by understanding decision-making processes in companies and the position of energy efficiency in them; after that, the project will develop a capacity building program to motivate the professionals of the involved companies to increase their capacity to implement the energy audit outcomes. Finally, the project will assist a series of engaged companies to implement selected measures in the field to test the results of the ‘Audit2Action’ strategy. A knowledge exchange space will be created to ensure sustainability, replication and exploitation of results also after the end of the project. AUDIT2MEASURE is characterised by its approach to result in action, thereby both developing a new methodology for adoption of energy audits and applying this to improve energy efficiency in the European industrial sector. This paper will describe the ‘Audit2Action’ strategy and present the first result of stakeholder engagement using such a methodology.","PeriodicalId":35178,"journal":{"name":"WIT Transactions on Ecology and the Environment","volume":"47 9","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138602365","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Modelling and simulation are increasingly used for system design in industry and research to finetune the design process and save on prototyping or testing costs. Correspondingly, energy modelling is an area of ever-growing relevance in the fields of mechanical and electrical engineering. However, there is a shortage of modelling and simulation programs in urban universities, which makes graduates of such schools less prepared for the energy job markets than their counterparts. To meet this need, a newly formed collaboration between the departments of Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and Teacher Education at Cleveland State University is developing a graduate program concentrating in Modelling and Simulation in Sustainable Energy Systems (MS-SES) to better prepare students for increasing energy sustainability professional roles. Building information modelling is a topic of importance in the field of sustainability for future working professionals. Hence, one of the courses in this concentration will foster student learning by setting up and visualizing simulated energy models in buildings, using a combination of 3D modelling, fluid flow and temperature modelling, and virtual reality. This paper explores the design and learning outcomes of this educational project for students through a case study of a room in an office building with a heat source. The project-led learning plan is integrated with the fundamentals of modelling and simulation theory and data-driven modelling techniques such as machine learning. Pokubo, Amin AL-HABAIBEH","doi":"10.2495/esus230101","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.2495/esus230101","url":null,"abstract":"Nigeria has in abundance various forms of energy resources that can drive sustainable development in various sectors of the country. Energy resources such as crude oil, natural gas, coal and renewable energy resources like solar, wind, large and small hydro are all in abundance in Nigeria making it a country full of potential in the rapidly growing global energy sector. Despite the country’s sizable energy resources, most Nigerian households lack reliable access to electricity and clean cooking fuels due to ill-managed grid-based infrastructure, vandalism, and disruptions in gas supply. With a population of over 200 million, 60% of Nigerian households rely on conventional energy resources, known to be contributors to climate change. To address these challenges, the Nigerian government is currently pursuing its Renewable Energy Master Plan of transitioning to renewable energy resources to mitigate household dependence on conventional energy resources and diversify the country’s energy mix. However, the transition process has been met with setbacks and advances at a slow pace. Therefore, this paper investigates the underlying factors of household energy transitions in Nigeria by identifying barriers to the transition process and household energy motives. Based on country-level panel data collected between the years 2018 and 2022, the study indicates that energy stacking is very much prevalent in urban and rural households, characterised by significant consumption inertia of conventional and traditional solid biomass fuels, followed by partial substitution of firewood for liquified natural gas and fuel-based generators for solar panels. The study identified various transition barriers categorised under five underlying factors of household renewable energy transition: economic, policy, legal, technical, market, and household demographic factors. But the study concludes that policy and legal factors such as renewable energy subsidies could encourage household transition to renewable energy sources and mitigate barriers to the transition process.","PeriodicalId":35178,"journal":{"name":"WIT Transactions on Ecology and the Environment","volume":"26 6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138602503","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
