In response to the ongoing cycle of drought and wildfire in their region, Sonoma, Napa and Mendocino wineries have introduced significant carbon-reduction measures in their processes, both in the vineyard and the production facilities. Utilizing case studies of select wineries in this region, we will provide representative examples of carbon reduction through regenerative agricultural practices in fertilizer and other vineyard inputs, onsite renewable energy installations, water conservation and green practices in facility construction. We will also review current trends in packaging materials and distribution impacts, the newest focus of carbon input reduction in the industry. Our paper will provide examples on how the wine industry’s move toward a more sustainable business model can be replicated by other agricultural businesses.","PeriodicalId":35178,"journal":{"name":"WIT Transactions on Ecology and the Environment","volume":"67 25","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138604922","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"ROAD AHEAD: SETTING THE BASIS FOR A TRANSFORMED MINIBUS TAXI INDUSTRY IN SOUTH AFRICA","authors":"S. Fobosi","doi":"10.2495/esus230381","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.2495/esus230381","url":null,"abstract":"The lack of political will has hindered the progress of the minibus taxi industry’s transformation efforts. The ANC government embraced the idea of a developmental state, aiming to use state intervention in the economy to address poverty, unemployment, and inequality. However, this intervention has yet to effectively extend to the minibus taxi industry. Although the government shifted its approach from a comprehensive recapitalization plan to restructure the taxi industry, more work is required to achieve meaningful transformation. Despite attempts to improve public transport through initiatives like the Bus Rapid Transport system, more measures still need to be taken to integrate urban planning and transportation effectively. Both vehicle and urban planning have been characterized as reactive rather than proactive, focusing on existing demands rather than catering to the increased accessibility and convenience needed by ordinary people who rely on minibus taxis. Consequently, the current transport and urban planning system must support the working poor, who primarily depend on minibus taxis, as they require more subsidies. As a result, despite using minibus taxis to access the city, only some of these individuals benefit from government funding. The paper addresses critical issues within the country’s minibus taxi sector. It aims to comprehensively analyse the industry’s current challenges, including safety concerns, regulatory issues, and sustainability. By examining these factors, the paper seeks to propose innovative solutions and policy recommendations to transform the minibus taxi industry into a safer, more efficient, and environmentally sustainable mode of transportation. The scope of the paper encompasses a wide range of topics, from regulatory frameworks and technology integration to socio-economic impacts, with the ultimate goal of fostering positive change and progress within this vital transportation sector.","PeriodicalId":35178,"journal":{"name":"WIT Transactions on Ecology and the Environment","volume":"25 10","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138601688","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Carbon capture, utilisation, and sequestration (CCUS) are essential for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and achieving carbon neutrality. This article aims to analyse the scientific production on CCUS in Scopus through the application of bibliometric techniques and a systematic review of the knowledge of the different techniques used, their distribution and trends. The methodological process consisted of three phases: (i) collection and processing of scientific information, (ii) bibliometric analysis using the Bibliometrix and VOSviewer software, and (iii) systematic review of the CCUS techniques used using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic method Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). The results showed a growing trend of annual publications on CCUS in the last decade, highlighting improvements in the storage technique in geological formations and oil production processes. Similarly, methodological trends have been identified for industries that reduce GHG emissions. The results of this study represent a tool for researchers and decision-makers related to CCUS that allows them to know the areas investigated to date, including the different CCUS techniques and their respective benefits and limitations.","PeriodicalId":35178,"journal":{"name":"WIT Transactions on Ecology and the Environment","volume":"15 5","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138602841","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Projects were developed considering the introduction of the architectural integration of PV (AIPV) concept in conventional multi-storey buildings typology. The resulting solar incidence validates an original teaching process carried out for an effective AIPV as part of the intermediate training in the architecture course; and it can also be considered as a valuable source to inform about the enormous possibilities of solar potential in relevant projects and expected policies addressed to housing and energy sectors in Lima. Numerous multi-family projects inside urban blocks with internal patios were evaluated. Although PV array orientations may differ between −49° and +75° with respect to the recommended azimuth (north = + 0°), acceptable performances are achieved (an average up to 80.55% of the available solar incidence by square meter at PV arrays), by using 41.49% of rooftop area. However, if better performances are expected, efforts are required to obtain more convenient azimuth orientation angles (from NNW to NNE) as well as reduce shading effects by separation and geometry configurations at rooftops. The average PV area per property could cover a large part of the electrical needs of dwellings in Lima, and it is very encouraging to allow owners to become self-consumers or even prosumers in the future, facilitating adaptation and mitigation scenarios to climate change in the urban environment. Other technical problems (other than solar incidence) can be studied in further research.","PeriodicalId":35178,"journal":{"name":"WIT Transactions on Ecology and the Environment","volume":"17 17","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138604119","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A wind turbine is a device to convert wind energy to electrical energy. There are two kinds of wind turbines: horizontal-axis wind turbine (HAWT) and vertical-axis wind turbine (VAWT). This paper presents the design, working principle, tests and application prospects of a green power tower (GPT) wind turbine. The GPT is a novel modular-stackable VAWT. Features of the GPT are that it does not require a tall tower as the HAWT does and does not have large turbine blades as the other VAWT designs have. The GPT is applicable to generate electricity used to drive auxiliary electric machineries on ships, such as pumps, heaters, cargo winches, winches, etc. and electric devices in ports and offshore, such as conveyers, lifters, cranes, etc. The novel GPT has no exposed moving turbine blades. The blades are covered completely in a round enclosure. Stackable modules of the GPT are prefabricated in factory. A single module is composed of one enclosure and one turbine, which form one level of the GPT. The GPT can be designed and installed to meet the required power load by using multiple level modules. The design of the novel modular-stackable GPT, comprising the turbine blade, enclosure, and wind flow channel, is described. In the paper, tests of scaled GPT prototypes in a wind tunnel and on site are described. The performance parameters of the wind turbine, such as power generation capacity, tip speed ratio (TSR), and power coefficient ( C p ) are measured and calculated. Finally, the prospect application of the GPT on ships, in ports, and offshore is presented.","PeriodicalId":35178,"journal":{"name":"WIT Transactions on Ecology and the Environment","volume":"58 15","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138604959","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Electricity is critical for poverty alleviation, economic growth and living standards improvement. According to the World Bank, there is some improvement in global population access to electricity, although global energy access is still a real challenge with around 675 million people without access to electricity. Moreover, the number of people without electricity in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) has rather increased with electricity reaching only about 50% of the population. In this context, a 4 kW foldable mobile solar power system (FMSPS) with 20 kWh energy storage has been developed and used as an educational tool for school outreach as well as a demonstrator for sustainable back-up power alternative to diesel generators for clean energy access in communities with high energy poverty. The system is uniquely designed to offer easy manufacturing, cost-effectiveness, high aerodynamic stability, and reliability alongside manual operation for minimal maintenance requirement. FMSPS was designed and manufactured as part of over £1 million funding awarded by Innovate UK under the Energy Catalyst Round 8 (Clean Energy Access) Competition. The collaborative research and development project aims to develop and demonstrate the next generation sodium-ion battery energy storage integrated with solar energy generation, to provide affordable and secure access to energy in SSA.","PeriodicalId":35178,"journal":{"name":"WIT Transactions on Ecology and the Environment","volume":"27 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138602625","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Agriculture, manufacturing, consumer households and road traffic all have their share. This is particularly true for the country featured in this paper: the Netherlands. Continuous pollution of the air and soil manifests itself as acification, decalcification and eutrofication. Biodiversity becomes lower and lower in nature areas. Biological farms are also under threat. In case of mobility, local air pollution may have a huge health impact. Effective policy is called for, after high courts blocked construction projects, because of foreseen building-and transport-related NO x emissions. EU law makers are after Dutch governments, because these favoured economics and politics over environmental and liveability concerns. But, people in the Netherlands are strongly divided. The latest provincial elections were dominated by environmental concerns, next to many socio-economic issues. NO x and CO 2 emissions by passenger cars are in focus. Technical means and increasing fuel economy norms strongly reduced NO x emissions to a still too high level. A larger number of cars neutralized a technological reduction of CO 2 emissions. The question is: What would be the impact of a drastic mandatory reduction in CO 2 , NO x , and PM 10 emissions on car ownership and use in the Netherlands? The authors used literature, scenario analysis and simulation modelling to answer this question. Electric mobility could remove these emissions. Its full impact will only be achieved if the grid-mix, which is still dominated by fossil fuels, becomes green(er), which is a gradual, long-term, process. EVs compete with other consumers of electricity, as many other activities, such as heating, are also electrifying. With the current grid-mix, it is inevitable that the number of km per vehicle per year is reduced to reach the scenario targets (−25% resp. −50% CO 2 emissions by cars). This calls for an individual mobility budget per car user.","PeriodicalId":35178,"journal":{"name":"WIT Transactions on Ecology and the Environment","volume":"20 9","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138602885","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, environmental issues and their non-renewable reserves have become the concern of multiple groups as they start to transition to green and renewable energy. When it comes to formulating energy policy in Indonesia, the most important factors to take into consideration are internal ones like ensuring energy security or supporting growth in the economy. Concerns regarding the availability of clean energy have not been cited as a justification for modification to energy policies. However, two different energy policies relating to net zero carbon and electric vehicle subsidies indicate that external factors, particularly global commitment, play a significant role in the formulation of energy policy and should be taken into consideration. The role of Indonesia as a G20 leader was a catalyst to make global commitment as a consideration in policy changes. Pollitt and Bouckaert’s analysis shows that some of the global economic and socio-demographic changes put pressure on the Government of Indonesia to reform its energy policies.","PeriodicalId":35178,"journal":{"name":"WIT Transactions on Ecology and the Environment","volume":"24 12","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138601708","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The predicted climate changes, although still uncertain in their magnitude, appear to be getting closer and closer and some effects already seem to be manifesting themselves. The challenge for the future in the field of construction is a design that, with the help of increasingly effective tools, succeeds in meeting the new environmental goals. Bringing such considerations into the field of design means not stopping at what has been done so far, which is mainly based on the analysis of energy flows. New perspectives require a holistic and strategic approach that considers all environmentally relevant aspects of building activity at the individual building level. The research goal was to verify how three different analysis tools used in the building sector, namely, thermal analysis, a rating system and life cycle assessment (LCA), detect changes in the design phase. The three tools have been applied to a real case consisting in the refurbishment of an existing industrial building converted to a residential building. Once the three evaluations have been completed, some variations related to insulation have been applied to the design to see how the three tools react to changes. The different sensitivity of the tools is an element of choice for the designer who can thus select the method of analysis that best meets their needs.","PeriodicalId":35178,"journal":{"name":"WIT Transactions on Ecology and the Environment","volume":"21 12","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138602516","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Hydrocarbon projects require comprehensive management in the production and transportation processes, where the application of drones plays a fundamental role by minimizing the exposure of personnel in high-risk activities, improving the efficiency of operations and the integrity of assets, and significantly reducing costs and time in the field. This study aims to conduct a bibliometric analysis and systematic review of the relationship between drones and the hydrocarbon industry, focusing on production and transportation processes through bibliometric techniques and evaluation of case studies for the analysis, classification, and description of key issues, methodologies, and trends worldwide. The research methodology consisted of three phases: (i) conceptualization of study variables and database combinations; (ii) bibliometric analysis using VOSviewer and bibliometric software; and (iii) focalization on systematic review using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) method. Bibliometric analysis collected data from 1985 to 2023, with 143 scientific publications indexed in the Scopus and WoS databases. The results showed a growing trend in the annual publications of drones and their application in the hydrocarbon industry, focusing on safety issues, pipeline inspections and storage tanks, and environmental monitoring generated by methane emissions and oil spills. In the case study analysis, the use of drones with different sensors was demonstrated, among which, the thermal camera, gas detector, LiDAR, EMAT, RGB camera, SWIR, RTK, and methane sensors stood out.","PeriodicalId":35178,"journal":{"name":"WIT Transactions on Ecology and the Environment","volume":"57 10","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138605121","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
