IPTs were put in place for management, systems, RF, modem, INFOSEC, internetworking, and control to develop an open architecture, simultaneous multichannel, multiband multimode software programmable/re-programmable networked and secure radio system that operates continuously and continuously in the radio spectrum from 2 MHz to 2 GHz. Within fifteen months after contract initiation from July 1995 to September 1996 the SPEAKeasy team demonstrated the first software embedded waveform on a 2-channel platform. This was achieved by using architectural principles from the PC community coupled with state of the art technology developments from the wireless communications community. After the first waveform was successfully demonstrated it was shown that additional waveforms could be integrated within the SPEAKeasy platform in a matter of a few days for each new waveform. In March of 1997 the SPEAKeasy MBMMR was shown to successfully interoperate with HF, SINCGARS, civil aviation, Have Quick II, and UHF SATCOM radios during Task Force XXI.","PeriodicalId":351392,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 97 MILCOM 97 Proceedings","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130899366","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This new approach encodes the signal using subword units of decomposition that can be extracted through hidden Markov modeling. The subword decomposition yields a segmentation of the signal into variable length quasi-stationary segments that are encoded using a variable rate multimode compression scheme. In this paper, we show that quality is dependent on the type and structure of the subword unit chosen for decomposition and compression. We show that fenones, which correspond to acoustic subword units, provide better quality than linguistic-based units such as phonemes. The speech model is based on a harmonic representation similar to the sinusoidal transform coder developed by McAulay and Quatieri (1986, 1992) and the multiband excitation model developed by Griffin and Lim (1987, 1988).","PeriodicalId":351392,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 97 MILCOM 97 Proceedings","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125591373","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This scheme assumes at least two different channels with oversampling at each channel. For a given channel, it was shown that the frequency response of the associated RF multipath channel may be well approximated over the raised cosine spectral bandwidth by a small number of sampled-spaced (not symbol-spaced) filter coefficients encompassing the multipath delay spread. As a result, multichannel (zero forcing) linear equalization may be effected via a small number of sample-spaced taps at each channel encompassing the multipath delay spread which, in a typical urban cellular environment, is a fraction of the \"mainlobe\" of the square-root spectral raised cosine pulse employed in the IS-136 standard. This paper shows how a decision feedback equalizer (DFE) may be constructed from the small number of sampled-spaced filter coefficients used to match the frequency response of the RF multipath channel associated with each channel. Simulations involving two beam channels are presented comparing the performance of the sampled-spaced multichannel linear equalizer with the resulting DFE. Averaging over an ensemble of multipath realizations, it is shown that the two schemes have roughly the same performance with respect to the mean square error of the output signal constellation.","PeriodicalId":351392,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 97 MILCOM 97 Proceedings","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126427776","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Global internetworking is causal to the creation of a dangerously real 5th dimension of warfare-cyberspace. This paper describes an Internet based assault, commonly referred to as e-mail spam, on the Langley AFB internetworking infrastructure. We discuss the cyber-attack, a framework for defending against the attack, and the results of the campaign. The countermeasure was accomplished by running the MTA in a mode which accepts and queues SMTP mail; processes the messages with a rules-based filter; and then forwards mail after filtering. The filtering framework is simple and effective for a large subset of e-mail bombs. The prototype filter scripts may be obtained from the authors.","PeriodicalId":351392,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 97 MILCOM 97 Proceedings","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114186514","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed network is an autonomous fully distributed wireless ATM network. The structure of the proposed network is hierarchical and allows for rapid deployment and dynamic reconfiguration of wireless stations. Nodes are organized into clusters. The cluster heads are analogous to the base stations in a conventional ATM and they act as the local coordinators to support services that include conventional data applications as well as multimedia (video, voice and data) applications with QoS (quality-of-service) guarantees. The proposed protocols are also intended to provide seamless internetworking with other wired ATM local and wide area networks. The algorithms are distributed for simple implementation and ease of mobility management. A wireless VP/VC concept is described to provide ATM cell routing and connections in the network. Routing and the provision for efficient utilization of the available bandwidth are major problems for supporting multimedia traffic in a wireless network. Call management, network management, and signaling are designed for simplicity. Restoration schemes are also proposed to resolve the connectivity problems associated with link or node failures.","PeriodicalId":351392,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 97 MILCOM 97 Proceedings","volume":"103 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114188464","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Relations of modulation index with bandwidth, bit-error rate, signal to noise ratio, ranging, commanding, telemetry, and carrier power losses have been investigated and compared with hardware simulation results of Clementine (or Deep Space Program Science Experiment, (DSPSE) satellite communication links). Most criteria are characterized in terms of the BER, loop bandwidth to data rate ratio, signal-to-noise ratio, and modulation index. The results show that modulation indices exert a significant influence on satellite communication links, and that there exists an optimum range of modulation index which can be determined through the proposed analytical aspects of modulation index range determination for different aspects of ranging, command, telemetry, and carrier power losses.","PeriodicalId":351392,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 97 MILCOM 97 Proceedings","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121174248","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

(1989). Based on QR decomposition, we present here how the OLS algorithm can be implemented recursively for general nonlinear stochastic systems. In such a way, the computation procedure can be performed in real time theoretically and save huge amounts of memory usage. Also because of the numerical stability of QR decomposition, we can expect to achieve good numerical performance. Volterra adaptive filtering is implemented to verify the algorithm. The results of computer simulation for two cases are shown. This algorithm may also be applied to other nonlinear signal processing problems.","PeriodicalId":351392,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 97 MILCOM 97 Proceedings","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116735865","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The goal of C2T2 was to systematically evaluate the applicability of commercial communication systems to tactical users, specifically the dismounted infantry. This paper discusses the use of a multicasting capability, one of the unique features of that system, to create a \"common view of the battlefield\" and assess the impact of high link error rates caused by very adverse tactical RF environments. Data collected during the Warrior Focus AWE is analyzed and implications are discussed for future tactical internet communication systems for dismounted infantry.","PeriodicalId":351392,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 97 MILCOM 97 Proceedings","volume":"64 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124977758","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
