To better understand their interplay, I will zoom in on the interaction of unconventional and conventional behaviour of individuals in the developments of [ be V ing ] and [ be going to | go to INF]. Apart from enhancing our understanding of the long-term effects of the urge to be expressive, an important outcome of the analysis will be that it is precisely the way in which the spiral of the conventional leads to the unconventional to the conventional again, which may help explain the phenomenon of unidirectionality in language change.

Noël
This squib first sketches the state-of-the-art in diachronic construction grammar by tracing it back to two strands of research which it distinguishes as historical construction grammar and constructionist grammaticalization theory. It then differentiates between usage-based work in diachronic construction grammar that focuses on (frequency of) use and work that centres on knowledge. It is posited that, to arrive at truly (radically) usage-based models of change, one should separate individual knowledge, or internal systems/constructicons, from assumed-to-be-shared knowledge, or external systems/constructicons. Two us-age-based models of constructional change, “Traugott/Trousdale” and “Fischer”, are assessed against this criterion. While the former explicitly distinguishes between individual and “community” knowledge, it is judged to confuse these by assigning a central role to reanalysis/neoanalysis. The latter model revolves around the role of analogy and is less confined to a semasiological account of the linear developments dictated by an external outlook.

We explore various gender mapping and learning mechanisms that can allow the agents to form a new agreement system using their semantic knowledge about the world. We investigate whether our strategies can yield cohesive clusterings over the semantic space. We notice that the system reaches full convergence in terms of gender preference at population level and that there are multiple successful ways of dividing the semantic space, including one that reflects the so-called individuation hierarchy , a case attested by a study of a spoken language data.

At the beginning, the marker has the\u0000meaning of a hypothetical comparative si comme l’en diroit / comme + qui + diroit\u0000meaning comme si l’on disait ‘as if one said’. In a second stage, the marker\u0000becomes a reformulative marker with a meaning similar to c’est-a-dire ‘that is\u0000to say’. Finally, in a third stage, it becomes a polyphonic mitigation marker. The\u0000diachronic study of comme qui dirait explains its contemporary meaning and\u0000reveals its semantic features. It suggests that commitment determines the strength of the contextual assumptions derived from utterance interpretation. In this contribution, I distinguish four kinds of commitment: speaker commitment, communicated commitment, attributed commitment and hearer commitment. The last two kinds of commitment are influenced by three main factors which will be considered in turn: linguistic markers, the hearer’s appraisal of the speaker and the salience of the communicated assumption in his cognitive environment. These claims translate into four experimentally testable predictions. This proposal echoes the current debate concerned with epistemic evaluation of information and aims to account for individuals’ commitment in terms of the relative strength of stored assumptions in their cognitive environment.

We think that there are several good reasons to deal with the challenge of delimiting the borderline between the semantics and the pragmatics of evidentiality. First, a clear view of the differences between the semantic meanings and the pragmatic meanings of evidential markers is useful for the lexicographic enterprise. For the sake of systematic research, a clear description of the core semantics of evidential markers would facilitate the work of a comprehensive database of these expressions in the languages of Europe (and the world) (cf. the Madrid based EUROEVIDMOD1-project). Indeed, putting together such a database requires a high degree of comparability both within the realm of evidential values and with

More specifically, we describe how metarepresentational\u0000and evidential content are expressed and interpreted in if‐conditional and\u0000although-concessive clauses. We also report original experimental data from a\u0000written, multiple choice interpretation task in L2 Spanish; and from an L1 task\u0000in Spanish with a set of conditional and concessive utterances in which indicative\u0000and subjunctive moods alternate. Our global results show that the ability to\u0000efficiently integrate linguistic and non‐linguistic cues is particularly costly for\u0000non‐native speakers. Yet native speakers also reveal, to a different degree, effects\u0000suggestive of processing difficulties related to syntax/discourse interface.

According to this view, it\u0000would be a sort of inferential particle. On the other hand, bide has been associated\u0000to the expression of a certain degree of belief or certainty on the truth of\u0000the proposition. This double dimension of bide resembles various aspects of\u0000the meaning and use of another Basque particle – omen. The morpho-syntactic\u0000behaviour of these two particles is practically identical, and their semantics\u0000and pragmatics invite a close comparison. Thus, starting from our conclusions\u0000regarding omen, we explore the similarities and differences between both particles.\u0000We find two main differences. First, bide encodes a doxastic dimension that\u0000is absent from the semantic meaning of omen. And, second, bide can be taken\u0000to be an illocutionary force indicator that does not contribute to the proposition\u0000expressed, while omen does contribute to the truth-conditions of the utterance.

In order to do this, I will try to account for the fact that rumor conditionals are epistemic as well as evidential whereas conjecture conditionals in Spanish are epistemic but not evidential, as they convey uncertainty and do not encode the source of information. I will claim that the morphological marker -ria is a modal epistemic operator of possibility in both cases. In a rumor conditional, the epistemic operator quantifies over the illocutionary force of an embedded proposition p (enunciation / truth of the information), which means “maybe the information about p is true”. The situation p is anchored in the present or in the future. In a conjecture conditional, the modal epistemic operator quantifies over the realization of an embedded proposition p (fact), which means “maybe the realization of p is true”. The situation p is anchored in the past.

Although the definition of evidentiality\u0000in Jakobson (1957) differs in some fundamental ways, it also allows for\u0000the explication of a participant structure inherent in evidential meanings. In\u0000this paper I argue that by exploring the interaction between these participant\u0000structures in multiple-perspective constructions and in reported speech, the\u0000framework proposed in Jakobson (1957) enables us to systematically examine\u0000phenomena that are typically assumed to arise in evidential expressions as pragmatic\u0000effects, particularly ‘commitment effects’ and evidential interpretations\u0000of modals. I propose that this approach present us with a principled account\u0000of stance meanings (Du Bois 2007), more particularly, of the semantic and\u0000pragmatic interaction between modal and evidential meanings, based on their\u0000semantic structure.
