Andrews and other contemporary practical theologies and liberationist perspectives. A pertinent question here arises: Will Andrews’ approach to ethnic-specific liberation properly dialogue with other practical theologies in correlation? In response, the researched argument intends to evidence that his methodology does, in fact, resonate well with notable scholars from the guild, even those from other cultural backgrounds and diverse geographical locations. In that stride, consider that Westernization and its concomitant individualism has adversely affected ethnic cultures and their collectivist natures, also resulting in power imbalances between America’s elite classes and the poor and disenfranchised. African-Americans, specifically, are often marginalized and oppressed, which goes against the biblical narrative and imperative for the church to properly “love thy neighbor” (Mark 12:31) and to seek liberation for those who are poor and destitute (Ps. 9:18; Prov. 14:31). Towards potential resolution, Andrews emphasized robust ecclesiological practices, stressing the importance of a flourishing Black American church, with the additional hope that such Spirit-inspired thriving would pour over into society as a whole. The selected theologians brought into the researched dialogue are intentional in identifying and working toward solutions regarding reconciled race relations and socio-spiritual liberation. Moreover, the increasingly multicultural church of America would do well to allow itself to be openly influenced by Majority World spiritualities, most specifically the songfulness and communal/cultural aspects of African religion.","PeriodicalId":350437,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Pastoral and Practical Theology (JPPT)","volume":"26 6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139162563","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Studies have shown that cultism is prevalent among university students, resulting in suicides, drug abuse, crimes, unrest, withdrawal from family, academic malpractices, failure, attrition, psychological and financial exploitation, among others. The study employed a descriptive research design. The study was carried out in six public universities in Kenya. A sample of 220 C.U. students was selected through simple random and stratified sampling methods. The study further included 60 small group Bible study leaders and 6 C.U. Patrons selected through purposive sampling. The study was guided by Bounded Choice Theory. This study established that theological grounding was perceived as contributing significantly to cultism (β=0.194; p<0.05). The study concludes that lack of adequate spiritual instruction may turn students to cultism since cults target students with a cursory familiarity with the scriptures, who lack a solid religious foundation, and who have been exposed to cultism as children. The study recommends training on cultism and on Bible study to enable students to attain spiritual strength prior to joining university. The Christian Unions should provide social support and discipleship for their members to shield them from cult recruiters. University Chaplains and C.U. Patrons should vet all preachers who come to the university to mitigate against cultic doctrines and practices.","PeriodicalId":350437,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Pastoral and Practical Theology (JPPT)","volume":"164 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135476259","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Dr David Owuor is a self-proclaimed prophet who has replaced his human history with a heavenly autobiography through an alleged supernatural origin. In 2003, Dr Owuor reported a vision from the Lord with Prophets Moses, Elijah, and Daniel and a conversation with John the Baptist, who revealed the events leading up to the second coming of Christ. He also claims that God gave him golden wedding rings and a handwritten note from heaven, explaining the character of those preparing to enter the Kingdom. He believes God transferred authority to Christ in 2006, contradicting Matthew 28:28. This research also found out that Prophet Owuor refers to God as 'Sabaoth', 'The Lord of Hosts', and 'The God Almighty', implying that he is the one who strikes the earth with deadly plagues like coronavirus. He claims to have the power to destroy the earth and send listeners to the grave. However, the Bible states that anything in the universe other than God belongs to Him. The study concludes that believers today do not require new revelations or visions to understand God's will, as the Written Word is sufficient for spiritual maturity.","PeriodicalId":350437,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Pastoral and Practical Theology (JPPT)","volume":"221 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136114084","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In Tigania East Sub-county, Meru County, lack of unity among different churches has emerged as a major challenge to the church's mission. Churches have struggled to come together and establish a shared stance on certain outdated traditional beliefs and practices that no longer contribute positively to the lives of people. The study used descriptive design in collection, analysis, comparison and interpretation of data. The research used questionnaires, interview schedules and focus group discussions to collect the required data. Data collected was presented using tables and pie charts for easier comparison and making of conclusions after the study. The study found that Churches in Tigania East need to invest towards the unity of the church. The Church in Tigania East Sub-county needs to invest more in its unity for effective evangelisation. Theological schools are supposed to aim at producing people who understand the dynamics of society and its needs so that the church can produce Christians who embrace and cope with the challenges that are facing human life. The church must remain united in order to defend the poor and the oppressed from all forms of political exploitation because it is the voice of the voiceless.","PeriodicalId":350437,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Pastoral and Practical Theology (JPPT)","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135853488","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study sought to identify the meaning of DSP and to determine the nature and usage of the DSP in churches in Kenya. The study posits that the DSP has gained popularity in the NCMs in Kenya, and in the last two decades, other denominations have started adopting it. This is occasioned by the upsurge of preachers who present it as a unique way of giving that replaced tithing and as a special way to attract the blessings of God in the life of believers. Although the advocates of the DSP postulate religious reasons, this study has established that it is used as a strategy to raise money in the church. Its usage has blurred the image of the church from being an institution existing for the plight of the needy and the suffering to becoming a commercial institution. This study concludes that its usage in the church is inconsistent with the teachings in the Bible and, therefore, a false doctrine. Clergy, whether or not advocating for the doctrine of seed planting, ought to sensitise their believers on the true nature of God, a compassion-loving God who cannot be bribed, manipulated or hand-twisted by man. The study contributes significant knowledge in the area of church and society.","PeriodicalId":350437,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Pastoral and Practical Theology (JPPT)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136238102","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study utilised a descriptive research design using a survey method. The study was carried out in Chuka Presbytery, located in the Eastern region in Tharaka Nithi County, comprising six parishes. A population of 3286 church members was targeted by the survey. A sample of 6 church ministers, 175 adult church members and 153 youth was obtained for the study. Data was collected using questionnaires, interviews and FGDs. With the exception of sports evangelism, mission and evangelism, all other Chuka Presbytery youth programmes for instilling morality were found to be ineffective. In order to enhance the effectiveness of church-based youth programmes, strategies such as preparation of high quality and experiential instructional content and delivering them using innovative pedagogies, establishing programmes that foster positive experiences and forging synergies with other churches in the implementation of church-based youth moral programmes were proposed. Other strategies include early moral socialisation and training, engagement of specialists in strategic communication as well as youth engagement in designing, implementing and evaluating programmes and follow-up are also vital trajectories.","PeriodicalId":350437,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Pastoral and Practical Theology (JPPT)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128597380","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Critical gaps in managing the Church's finances have resulted in its unsustainability. Proper financial management systems are necessary to ensure the appropriate use of church resources for long-term sustainability. The Church is facing an economic crisis due to poor financial management, which has resulted in its inability to sustain itself. The Church cannot financially sustain itself and, therefore, cannot meaningfully impact the lives of members of society. The analysis drew upon Stewardship theory, which offered valuable guidance on financial management practices to ensure the long-term viability of the Church. The study used a descriptive research design, and data were obtained using interview schedules and questionnaires from a sample size of 355 participants. The study found that despite having all the financial systems and structures in place, the South East Kenya Field SDA church is still not self-sustaining. The systems need to be fixed since those to ensure that they are working are not adequately trained and not skilled. It recommended that the SDA church invest in its personnel in terms of empowerment in financial management for the Church's good.","PeriodicalId":350437,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Pastoral and Practical Theology (JPPT)","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125765061","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Itumbe Station of the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) church has 1551 widows. The argument of this study is that the death of a husband impacts every aspect of a widow’s life, together with the orphaned children left to her. Most of the Abagusii widows within the SDA church undergo very difficult dilemmas of life: discriminatory regards to isolation, condemnation, stigmatisation, poor access to basic services like healthcare, material poverty, psychosocial trauma, demoralisation, fearfulness, emptiness, helplessness, and abandonment to loneliness. They have lost their dignity, which is against the position of Jesus, who showed zero discrimination to any member of society. Informed by Family Systems Theory, the study claims that solutions to the reality of widowhood are neither just doctrinal nor one-sided. The SDA church should be fully involved through the strengthening of pastoral care ministry and possibly through the creation of a specific ministry for widows, for it is the mission of the church to take care of widows, offering them solidarity, comfort, and consolation.","PeriodicalId":350437,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Pastoral and Practical Theology (JPPT)","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126198418","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Power-Words have power beyond the ordinary speech of communicating ideas. It is direct and does not need meditation. The study found that Power-Words are said to have inherent power to deal with all realms of life. They are used in the animistic worldview for protection, provision and treatment against the exigencies of life experienced in the physical and spiritual world. In the use of Power-Words, the findings observed that a careful application of Power-Words is needed so as to avoid a syncretistic attitude that enters the biblical worldview from an animistic worldview which presupposes the sovereignty of man where he plans what is desirable for oneself in his environment. Man becomes God for himself or becomes co-equal with God, which is a humanistic attitude of trying to achieve one's own desired goals. This is a false authority in handling and working out one's own destiny. This piece of work concludes that God cannot be manipulated in any form or any means. God will not share his glory with man; hence Power-Words used by man without acknowledging the sovereignty of God are contrary to the character and nature of God.","PeriodicalId":350437,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Pastoral and Practical Theology (JPPT)","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121842196","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
