In this paper, a simple evaluation method for acoustic properties, such as density and elastic stiffness, of thin films is presented. In this method, the acoustic properties are evaluated from the measured resonance frequency change of high overtones of a piezoelectric thickness-mode resonator due to deposition of a test film on the resonator surface. The resonance frequencies of higher overtones change being influenced by stiffness as well as density. Thus, the density and stiffness of the film as the unknown parameters can be determined so as to minimize the sum of the square errors between measured and calculated resonance frequencies for many overtones. This method was applied to evaluation of acoustic properties of various thin films by using a Z-cut LiTaO/sub 3/ plate as the piezoelectric resonator. The resonance frequencies calculated using the evaluated density and stiffness agreed well with the measured values, suggesting that the properties of thin films were properly evaluated.","PeriodicalId":350384,"journal":{"name":"2000 IEEE Ultrasonics Symposium. Various HIFU doses were applied to platelet rich plasma (PRP) with and without ultrasound contrast agents. Flow cytometry, laser aggregometry, environmental scanning electron microscopy and passive cavitation detection were used to quantify platelet activation, aggregation, adhesion and associated cavitation. HIFU can activate platelets and cause them to adhere to a collagen-coated surface. Cavitation was monitored during aggregation trials and was quantified to provide a relative measure of the amount of cavitation that occurred in each aggregation trial. Regression analysis shows weak correlation between aggregation and intensity, and a strong correlation between aggregation and cavitation occurrence.","PeriodicalId":350384,"journal":{"name":"2000 IEEE Ultrasonics Symposium. Recent developments in microfabrication technology have spurred novel design for transducers in the ultrasonic range both for air and water applications. In this paper we report the fabrication process of transducers using PECVD deposition technology. With this process it is possible to change the stress from compressive to tensile, varying the temperature and time parameters. The resulting film is of very good quality and experiences irreversible modification after annealing process which prevents changes at lower temperature. Using this technology we succeeded in fabricating transducers with 3.8 MHz resonant frequency in air.","PeriodicalId":350384,"journal":{"name":"2000 IEEE Ultrasonics Symposium. Proceedings. In our experiments this low-velocity layer is a thin sheet of glass bonded to a very thin (32 micron) polymer film. The film in turn is bonded to a much thicker soda-lime glass base plate. We are using two transducers which can be moved freely about the glass surface, to vary the distance between them or to check the glass for uniformity. In these transducers, longitudinal waves at 5.6 MHz are first converted to bulk shear waves by reflection from a tilted surface; the shear waves are then focused upon a wedge-shaped edge which rests on the glass under gentle pressure and vibrates so as to generate SH waves in the glass. Group velocity, phase velocity and propagation loss were measured on substrates using several kinds of glass and various polymers. Experimental data correlate well with computation and indicate that some of these compound plates could make excellent touch-sensitive panels.","PeriodicalId":350384,"journal":{"name":"2000 IEEE Ultrasonics Symposium. Two focused large angular aperture transducers are used in this technique. Foci of the transducers are placed on the specimen surface and received voltage V(x,t) is acquired during the relative transducers translation along the specimen surface. Due to geometry of the ultrasonic system, angular range of the generated and detected waves can be close to (0, /spl pi//2) and the length of the recording distance is unlimited. Velocity and attenuation of the leaky wave measured by this method do not depend on the temperature of the immersion liquid. Also, contrary to V(z) method, angular resolution of the V(x,t) method is better for small incident angles.","PeriodicalId":350384,"journal":{"name":"2000 IEEE Ultrasonics Symposium. Proceedings. It is comprised of a thin planar substrate that is acoustically matched to the surrounding media. Precisely located scatterers on the surface of the substrate generate echo signals. We show that by vibrating the substrate in a suitable manner, an echo signal may be generated which simulates bidirectional flow. We demonstrate that a vibration of low amplitude at frequency f/sub 0/ produces a Doppler spectral signal at f/sub 0/ and -f/sub 0/, within the limits of aliasing. Furthermore, by driving the film with a bandlimited noise signal, we illustrate how a velocity distribution may be simulated. A time-varying flow velocity may be simulated by varying the noise bandwidth with time. Finally, using this technique we demonstrate a system that simulates an arterial flow pattern including its characteristic velocity distribution, in forward and reverse directions simultaneously.","PeriodicalId":350384,"journal":{"name":"2000 IEEE Ultrasonics Symposium. Geometrical and mechanical characteristics of these layers are usually chosen with the help of the 1D design formalism. However, it doesn't take into account of lateral waves propagation in the layer which could damage radiation pattern of the transducer. The Finite Element Model, with the help of the ATILA code, permits to take this kind of phenomenon into account. In this paper, the influence of mechanical and geometrical characteristics of the matching layer on appearance of lateral modes is examined. This study is concluded by the definition of a choice criterium guaranteeing no lateral mode in the bandwidth of the transducer.","PeriodicalId":350384,"journal":{"name":"2000 IEEE Ultrasonics Symposium. Multirow ultrasonic transducer arrays were emulated by combining adjacent elements of a 3.0 MHz, 0.6 mm pitch two-dimensional array to define larger virtual elements. Random scattering data were acquired at f/2.0 through a tissue-mimicking distributed aberrator (65 ns rms arrival time fluctuation with 8.2 mm FHWM correlation length) and time-shift maps estimated from the data were used for transmit focus compensation. Compensated beams formed by 2-D and 1.75-D arrays with fine row pitches were similar, but focus restoration was significantly less effective for a 1.75-D array with coarse row pitch. For example, the mean -20 dB lateral beamwidths measured using transmit focus compensation were 5.2 mm for arrays with 0.6 and 1.8 mm row pitches and 9.5 mm for an array with 5.4 mm pitch. When random scattering data were acquired using the compensated beams, time-shift maps produced with the 5.4 mm pitch array included large discontinuities and had higher root mean square values. The results indicate that multirow arrays designed for use with aberration correction should have element dimensions much less than 67% of the correlation length of the aberration.","PeriodicalId":350384,"journal":{"name":"2000 IEEE Ultrasonics Symposium.
