Sequeira’s translation with its poetic brilliance in concert fully with the poet herself should be read and the song of it heard. De Rokha details her travel experience in midcentury Latin America with its social struggles offset by its unique geography. This translation, like all translations, is itself a form of travel writing, crossing linguistic and cultural borders. Here, de Rokha counterpoints the largely imagined American travels of Walt Whitman, who for instance in his canto americano “Starting from Paumanok [indigenous name of Long Island, New York]” (1860) proclaimed he would “strike up for a New World.” She mentions him with fondness and admiration in one of the poems (91). Sadly, he did not get to her America. The translation, meanwhile, is clunking: over-reliant on verbal locutions with “get”, guilty of solecisms (e.g. intransitive “tell”, 90), it may reflect a clunking source text, but the absence of any note explaining translation procedures or strategies (except a lengthy disquisition on measurements and currency) leaves this reader once again in doubt. In short, Kiöping has arrived in English in magnificent form. His writings are of potential interest for the light they may throw onto European activity in the Orient from the distinctive vantage of Sweden, a nation whose influence on European affairs in the central decades of the seventeenth century is easily overlooked. Cohen","doi":"10.1080/13645145.2022.2039091","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1080/13645145.2022.2039091","url":null,"abstract":"The Valley Loses Its Atmosphere by Chilean poet Winétt de Rokha (1894–1951) is an epic comprising forty-eight stunning poems written primarily during her journey across Latin America with her famed poet husband, Pablo de Rokha. He had been named Cultural Ambassador of Chile in the Americas by President Juan Antonio Ríos. The ambassadorial journey of the two poets took place from 1944 to 1946, and their travels took them through nineteen countries in South and Central America—including Peru, Uruguay, Bolivia, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Guatemala, Cuba, and Mexico—before reaching the United States. Translated beautifully from Spanish by Jessica Sequeira, whose critically astute introductory essay illuminates the epic, the poetry forms Winétt’s canto americano (American song)—“American” in the original continental sense of the word denoting all of the Americas. The subject of The Valley Loses Its Atmosphere is Latin America, that is, her America. Winétt’s fourth and final collection of poetry, this work was originally published in 1949, the year before fellow Chilean Pablo Neruda published his Canto General (General Song), another American epic based in part on firsthand travels, written in a similar poetic language and with a similar political perspective (i.e. Communist) against oppressive social conditions and foreign imperialist/capitalist interventions in Latin America. Neruda is no stranger to English-language readers, whereas Winétt de Rokha remains essentially unknown. This new bilingual book of her verse, however, goes a long way to change the present situation. It shows her poetic genius at full power and proves her work deserves attention in the Anglophone world. Moreover, the book contributes an edgy, lyric dimension to mid-twentieth-century American travel literature. Winétt’s poetry is characterised by its musicality, unusual imagery, earthiness, dignity, and independence from literary tradition. Searching for new forms to represent reality, her poetry is experimental and avant-garde, in keeping with the modernist period when she composed it. Dadié’s Un Nègre à Paris (1959; 1994) and Tété-Michel Kpomassie’s L’Africain du Groenland ([1981] (2015); 2001) by focusing on their portrayals of transport and rhythms of mobility, and in so doing enhances the dialogue between travel writing studies and mobilities research. The texts’ representations of mobility practices and the rhythms thereof contribute to the production of the traveller figure (tourist; Arctic adventurer) and the destination (colonial metropolis; Arctic periphery). Dadié’s portrayals of transport produce a poetics of mobility that conveys a sense of speed and hurry but also of not being in the rhythm of the colonial metropolis, which eventually transforms into a critical attitude towards assimilationist impulses. Two hundred and ninety-five years after Jonathan Swift (anonymously) published a book in which he used the format of what was then known as “voyages and travels” to create a satire on various aspects of British society and its travel writers, Tim Hannigan uses the travel book format to voice the most pertinent questions about the nature, the past and the future of both travel writing and the academic discipline of travel writing studies. These authors present to their Chinese readers portraits of a thriving city with a vibrant atmosphere that, nonetheless, transcends its present to be crystallised in an exuberant eternal renaissance. The article argues that the authors are inspired by a specific idea of the Italian Renaissance that gained momentum in late nineteenth-century Europe. This idea strongly resonated with the Chinese intellectual elite of the early twentieth century, who found in it an inspiration to face China’s internal political challenges. It does so by considering them in relation to the daughters of renegades – Christian European converts – who were born in the Maghreb and into the Muslim faith but who continued to be identified as English. Their task was to maintain order and fight “rebels”. Dutch soldiers were part of the occupying force that saw to it that the population was kept under control. At a time when Dutch authority had not yet been established everywhere in the Indonesian archipelago, they had an important task. To what extent did this military mission determine their perspective? This article focuses on the texts of three soldiers: Maurits Ver Huell, Nikolaas Willem Schmal and Dirk Hendrik Kolff. All three visited the Indies in the early nineteenth century and each published a travelogue about their experiences. This article illustrates how the task that Dutch military travellers had influenced their representation of the indigenous people.
