The proposed approach is based on the best analytic approximation of the power pattern ratio between adjacent beams. Under quite general assumptions, the proposed approach resolves to the solution of a quadratic equation. Compared to conventional estimators, the precision of the proposed approach is competitive, permitting a cost-effective solution for low complexity implementation. Computer simulations and experimental verifications in a anechoic setup confirm the proposed approach when operating with a circular polarized SBA and the received signal strength data collected with a low-cost commercial transceiver. A mean error of 1.1° with a standard deviation of 1.6° is experimentally observed when the SBA communicates with a co-polarized target at the range of 2 meters. To eliminate the tilting of the main beam, the slot array is fed from the centre at the back of the HSIW, which results in a blockage area. To reduce the impact on sidelobe levels, a slot extrusion technique is introduced. A simplified multiway power divider is demonstrated to feed the array elements and the optimisation procedure is described. To verify the antenna design, a 6 × 6 planar array is fabricated and measured in a low temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) technology. To achieve high gain, the SIC antenna is excited by using the L-probe feed techniques. As for this antenna, the SIC is the main radiator, and the L-probe is also involved in radiation. Moreover, a compact two-layer low-loss laminated waveguide (LWG) feeding network is designed for a 4 × 4 antenna array. By combining the high-gain antenna element and low-loss feeding network, a high-gain antenna array is achieved. The proposed antenna array shows a wide measured impedance of 15.9% from 87 GHz to 102 GHz for |S11|<; -10 dB, and a gain up to 18.3 dBi by reconfiguring radiating elements, feeding network, and the transition. This approach utilizes no access point equipment that encloses an antenna, amplifier, etc. but a dielectric waveguide that can easily deform its shape. The communication area is formed only by inflecting the dielectric waveguide. This is because millimeter wave signals can be radiated from the inflected part of the dielectric waveguide. Based on this approach, it is easy to move and add the communication area by moving a location and increasing the number of the inflected parts, respectively. This paper shows fundamental characteristics of the dielectric waveguide when the waveguide is bended at 180-degree angle by simulation and measurement. The S-parameters of a quasi-TEM coupler are derived in the case when even- and odd- mode phase velocities are unequal. The effects on the performance of the Marchand balun are then investigated by analyzing its calculated S-paramaters under different phase-velocity-ratios of both the modes. Measurements show a minimum insertion loss of 2.3 dB, and a 1-dB insertion loss bandwidth from 200-325 GHz. The amplitude imbalance is less than 1.5 dB upto 325 GHz, while the phase imbalance is below 10 deg upto 273 GHz. Through out the operating range the input return loss remains higher than 15 dB. This leads to enhanced demands especially with regard to the usable RF bandwidth. One main step to overcome this is the use of disruptive semiconductor materials for RF MMICs. As the RF section of today's T/R modules for AESA applications is typically based on GaAs technology, GaN and SiGe BiCMOS will challenge or even replace it, here. This paper will describe the design of a GaN-based T/R module using all-European MMICs and covering the X-band from 8 to 12 GHz and its realisation at Airbus Defence and Space in Ulm. It will show some measurement results and give an impression on achieved performance. The strategy consists of selecting non-uniform coupling window thicknesses along the filter structure. The basic idea is that irises of different thicknesses can produce the same coupling values in the passband but have different loading effects in the harmonic resonances. To further increase the level of spurious rejection, the above technique is combined with the use of resonators of different widths. With a driving signal in the WR-28 frequency band (26.5-40 GHz), an output signal in the WR-3 frequency band (220-330 GHz) is generated and radiated. A prototype has been manufactured using high precision 3D printing techniques. The performance with multiplication orders 5, 7 and 9 has been compared, obtaining maximum power levels of about -45 dBm, measured at a distance of 250 mm. One of the key limiting factors of a six-port receiver is its narrow dynamic range which is mainly limited by the use of square-law diode detectors in the primary detector circuit. In order to improve its dynamic range, this paper proposes to use logarithmic detectors for the detector stage of the six-port receiver. Such an approach helps in detecting signals over a wide dynamic range of 80 dB, thus making it almost comparable to that of the available heterodyne receivers. Additionally, the measured frequency error did not exceed ±51 MHz (3.5%) over the frequency range of 1 to 2 GHz using the equations for the power proportional voltages to estimate the phase angle and accordingly, the frequency, which can then be minimized using further digital post-processing.
