The generation of short pulses is performed with an optoelectronic device triggered by a laser flash and operating in linear switching mode. By adding as many optical systems as antennas, we create a transmitting array with increased radiated energy. Each of those elements are fed with bursts composed of UWB optogenerated pulses with a slightly different pulse repetition frequency allowing beam-scanning capability. The requirement is to generate a low profile, high performance tracking feed suitable for dual polarized operation with high pattern symmetry for optimum illumination of a reflector. Crossed dipole antenna has been selected as feed element as it has low profile, broadband characteristics and supports dual polarization. The designed feed consists of four such elements arranged in 2×2 configuration. Feed analysis has been carried out in Ansys HFSS. Simulated performance of the feed shows a sum channel gain of 10.8dBi and difference between sum pattern peak to difference pattern peak is 3.3dB. In this design, a combination of striplines and microstrip lines are used to excite the antenna elements resulting in low cross polarization better than -30dB. Null depth in excess of 35dB is obtained in simulation for both polarizations. This paper describes a practical calibration algorithm that calibrates amplitude and phase errors coarsely using interior calibration source and then realizes precise calibration by eigen-decomposition approach. Based on an 8-elements digital array radar test-bed operating at L & S band, experiments are carried out in the anechoic chamber and outdoors. After calibration, the radiation pattern is nearly ideal and the direction of arrival (DOA) estimation of measured data achieves a good performance. The Beamforming Network provides the required suitably phase shifted RF signals with adequate power levels to the phased array antenna elements in order to squint the beam electronically toward the satellite direction and keep the link with the satellite active also during the movement of the vehicle. The performance of this antenna are investigated over a wide frequency range, comparing between measured and simulated results. The measured return loss of the antenna exhibits a wideband performance between 1.5 and 4GHz (@VSWR=2). The proposed antenna has a good symmetrical radiation pattern in the E- and H-planes. This antenna configuration is suitable particularly for broadband phased antenna arrays where active circuits are integrated on the feed substrate. In the paper several important improvements to the recently developed local-quadratic map-drift autofocus are proposed. Important SAR image preprocessing steps applied before the local Doppler rate errors estimation are described. The weighting scheme for the evaluation of residual cross-track acceleration components is developed. It is illustrated that accounting of the local image contrast leads to better estimation precision. Also it is shown that the usage of measured real antenna orientation angles results in more reliable estimation of the local Doppler rate errors. The measurements are conducted with an integrated diversity circuit which enables the phase-aligned signal combination in a die area of only 4mm by 4 mm. Combined with a compact level detection circuit and a micro-controller unit which runs the diversity algorithm the diversity system has a stacked footprint area of 10 cm by 7 cm. Measurement results of test drives using this diversity system in a Rayleigh-fading scenario show a significant reduction of audio mutes compared to a single antenna reference system. This is equivalent to an increased link margin which could also be used for increased audio content or quality from the service provider. The diversity system can be applied at arbitrary driving speeds. The directional distribution of radiated energy and the directional (system) fidelity factor are employed as performance metrics. Illustrative numerical experiments highlight the expedient radiation features that are specific to pulse-train excited, linear array antennas. By utilizing the frequency-space mapping characteristic of microwave MTMs, we are able to detect multiple targets in real time by simply reading the received spectral components with minimum post-processing that is usually required in conventional radar or imaging systems. This is especially true for cooperative radar systems, where the ramps for modulation and down-conversion are generated separately, strongly increasing the impact of ramp nonlinearities. In this paper, the causes for ramp non-linearities in a PLL-based synthesizer are discussed and modeled as phase deviations from an ideal ramp. A measurement technique to determine these deviations is introduced, where both the hardware setup and the necessary digital processing steps are presented. It is exemplarily applied to an FMCW synthesizer with an integrated 122-GHz transceiver, evaluating the influences of PLL parameters on ramp linearity.
