Vargas , A. von Oetinger","doi":"10.1016/j.ft.2024.07.002","DOIUrl":"10.1016/j.ft.2024.07.002","url":null,"abstract":"<div><h3>Objectives</h3><p>The aim of this research is to explore the influence of different exercise protocols on carbohydrate oxidation.</p></div><div><h3>Design</h3><p>Uncontrolled experimental study.</p></div><div><h3>Methods</h3><p>They recruited ten inactive male subjects, 30–39 years old, with elevated body mass index (BMI). Each participant was evaluated in four separate sessions. First session consisted in determining peak aerobic power (<em>p</em>AP), following sessions participants realized three equivalent exercise protocols; each one consisted of three bouts of 15-min exercise separated by 5<!--> <!-->min. Constant intensity protocol (CIP) included exercise at 55% of <em>p</em>AP, while the other (increasing and decreasing) consisted in exercise at 40%, 55% and 70% of <em>p</em>AP in an increasing or decreasing order respectively.</p></div><div><h3>Results</h3><p>IIP (increasing intensity protocol) causes a progressive increase in carbohydrate oxidation comparative to DIP (decreasing intensity protocol and CIP protocols (<em>p</em> <!-->≤<!--> <!-->0.01). In the third period of protocol IIP oxidized significantly more carbohydrate than the other two.</p></div><div><h3>Conclusions</h3><p>Carbohydrate oxidation in exercises at intervals of different intensity depends on the order of these periods, being greater when performed increasingly, being more useful for sedentary subjects with insulin resistance and diabetes mellitus. The competencies of physical therapists working in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) can vary depending on the geographical region. Currently, Mexico lacks a standardized framework for defining the competencies of physical therapists working in the ICU. The objective of this study is to establish minimum standards for clinical practice among physical therapists in the ICU in Mexico.</p></div><div><h3>Material and methods</h3><p>An expert consensus was achieved using a Delphi technique, involving three rounds of electronic questionnaire-based inquiries.</p></div><div><h3>Results</h3><p>A total of 41 experts participated in the first two rounds, and 38 in the third round. Pérez Herrera","doi":"10.1016/j.ft.2024.03.002","DOIUrl":"10.1016/j.ft.2024.03.002","url":null,"abstract":"<div><h3>Introduction</h3><p>The increasing use of mobile devices among students has led to a rise in the prevalence of text neck syndrome, characterized by pain and tension in the neck.</p></div><div><h3>Objective</h3><p>Assessing the positive impact of a tele-rehabilitation program specifically designed to mitigate the effects of text neck syndrome in university students during the COVID-19 pandemic.</p></div><div><h3>Materials and methods</h3><p>A quasi-experimental study was conducted in which a tele-rehabilitation program was designed, implemented, and evaluated to reduce neck pain in university students with text neck syndrome. The program included stretching and strengthening exercises, lasting for four weeks through the specialized platform Physiotec®. Twenty-four individuals with a medical diagnosis of text neck syndrome participated, and variables such as pain, generic and cervical disability, as well as range of motion, were analyzed.</p></div><div><h3>Results</h3><p>The results indicated significant improvements in pain symptoms, with a notable shift towards the mild pain category, while cases of moderate to severe pain decreased. The mechanisms underlying its development may be related to the physical and cognitive demands of combat flying. However, there is no clear consensus on the most effective approach to its treatment.</p></div><div><h3>Objective</h3><p>To analyse the effects of a 4-week multimodal physiotherapy programme combining supervised laser-guided neck exercise and electro-massage (consisting of manual therapy and interferential current) on the workplace in fighter pilots with flight-related neck pain.</p></div><div><h3>Methods</h3><p>A total of 14 fighter pilots with flight-related neck pain were recruited. The intervention consisted of 8 sessions (twice weekly) for 4 weeks. A follow-up period of 4 weeks was established. Perceived pain intensity, pain threshold to pressure, cervical disability, active cervical range of motion, cervical joint repositioning error, kinesiophobia and pain catastrophizing were assessed.</p></div><div><h3>Results</h3><p>Statistically significant changes (<em>P</em><.05) were obtained in all variables analysed at immediate post-treatment. People with physical disabilities suffer a loss of muscle mass and excess weight, thus intensifying the existence of health problems, such as musculoskeletal injuries due to the characteristics of sport and daily life activities. The aim of the study is to identify the anthropometric characteristics, handgrip strength and injury history of upper limb in Paralympic athletes of initiation.</p></div><div><h3>Methods</h3><p>A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out in 30 Paralympic athletes in the initiation process of Wheelchair Basketball, Wheelchair Tennis, Para Swimming and Para-Powerlifting between 18 and 60 years of age with physical disability. They were assessed with dynamometry and subcutaneous folds.</p></div><div><h3>Results</h3><p>The body mass index of women exceeded that of men by 5.3<!--> <!-->kg/m2, being a state of overweight. The fat mass index of women was higher than that of men by 2.9<!--> <!-->kg/m2. In men, a statistically significant difference was found between athletes with and without history of injury in weight (p<!--> <!-->=<!--> <!-->0.01), fat free mass (0.00<!--> <!-->+) and right upper limb strength (p<!--> <!-->=<!--> <!-->0.01).</p></div><div><h3>Conclusions</h3><p>Athletes with history of injury presented high values in body composition, which could interfere in their progression process to high performance sport. The use of Glossopharyngeal breathing has been reported in the sport of freediving and some chronic neuromuscular diseases. The objective of this study is to present a clinical case with the presence of the two genetic pathologies confirmed with molecular analysis and to design a multidisciplinary rehabilitative treatment based on the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF).</p></div><div><h3>Materials and methods</h3><p>A female patient with a moderate physical and intellectual disability is presented, with neurological damage secondary to metabolic deregulation; additionally, he has deficiencies in: gait, posture, neurosensory area and limitations in Basic Activities of Daily Living (BADL). A therapeutic intervention based on the ICF was carried out and multidisciplinary rehabilitation treatments of physiotherapy (20 sessions), occupational therapy (10 sessions) and psychology (15 sessions) were designed. The results obtained were evaluated with clinical and psychological assessments and with the application of scales such as: EPlfant, WeeFIM and the Get Up and Go Test and visual gait analysis.</p></div><div><h3>Results</h3><p>A result of 70% improvement in gait and posture was obtained. 70% improvement in ABDL, in the neurosensory and psychomotor area. Better psychosocial performance was promoted, with improvement in cognitive and recreational activities.</p></div><div><h3>Conclusions</h3><p>This is the first case reported in the literature with a new mutation not registered in ClinVar. González Doníz","doi":"10.1016/j.ft.2024.05.001","DOIUrl":"10.1016/j.ft.2024.05.001","url":null,"abstract":"<div><p>Telerehabilitation (TR) is a service delivery modality that favors access to rehabilitation; there is a need for research about TR implementation in Latin America (LA) to demonstrate development strategies and impact results.</p></div><div><h3>Aim</h3><p>To identify characteristics, barriers and facilitators of TR implementation in LA.</p></div><div><h3>Method</h3><p>Scoping review from January 1, 2010, to December 31, 2022, using the databases Virtual Health Library (VHL); Scielo; PubMed; Scopus; Web of Science; EBSCO; CINAHL and Google Scholar; also, manual and gray literature searches.</p></div><div><h3>Results</h3><p>17 articles were identified reporting TR implementation processes in Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Guatemala and Haiti. The TR implementation scenarios included primary health care, education and therapeutic intervention services. The most frequently identified barriers were: lack of connectivity; availability of therapeutic implements; difficulties in the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs); quality of ICTs; and organizational and administrative difficulties. Among the facilitators</p><p>: the existence of regulations; ICT education of professionals and users; functionality; beneficiaries’ satisfaction of use and acceptance of TR.</p></div><div><h3>Conclusions</h3><p>TR in LA is emerging, and current literature reveals heterogeneity in terms of populations, settings and implementation outcomes. The identification of barriers and facilitators contributes to the implementation of TR in the region.
