Calvo","doi":"10.23858/ep66.2022.3065","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.23858/ep66.2022.3065","url":null,"abstract":"In Candomblé, existence and the continuation of life are dependent on a complex dynamic of interactions involving humans and non-humans (objects, artifacts, the environment, animals, plants, minerals, the ancestors, spiritual beings, forces). It is an ontological monism, based on the concept of àṣẹ, the life force that constitutes life in its manifestations; a conception of human beings as a composition of spiritual and material components (in which ancestors, elements of nature and divine particles participate); ways of communicating and connecting with natural phenomena, the ancestors and the spiritual world; the forms of conceiving of, living with and treating health and disease; and ways of making kin all express a mode of existence, of inhabiting the world and developing along lines of life in which all more-than-human beings participate. \u0000The centrality of water, breath and blood – all of which have the ability to flow inside and outside of the body and from one body to another and are the major expressions of life – in rituals, transmission of knowledge, daily care and social relations, expresses fluidity and networks of connectivity and conviviality, as well as the incompleteness of all beings. Propozycje filozoficzne, epistemiczne i metodologiczne, które przekraczają antropocentryzm i zwracają się ku światu więcej niż ludzkiemu, czyli posthumanizm, nowy materializm, koncepcja zamieszkiwania, oraz te osadzające proces poznania w praktykach uwikłania, czyli teoria asamblażu i etnografia wielogatunkowa, miały również wpływ na koncepcję etnografii transrelacyjnej, której kształt zarysowuję w artykule. W tekście rozważam wpływ tych nurtów i koncepcji na nowe antropologiczne imaginarium, argumentując, że etnografia transrelacyjna może odpowiedzieć na wyzwania Antropocenu, zmiany klimatu i jej społeczne, ekonomiczne i ekologiczne konsekwencje. The Polish Ethnographic Atlas, partially digitalized collection of which was made available online in 2017, contains numerous and valuable archival materials. The preliminary thematic research, which can be treated as an introduction to further, in-depth studies and analyses, showed that some of them depict toys and games of children living in the Polish countryside in the years 1954–1971, though documenting artefacts and phenomena of this category did not result directly from the principles embraced by the authors of the Atlas. The aim of the article is: 1) to describe the digitalized photographic collection of the PAE, 2) to reflect upon certain strategies of browsing through the electronic database in order to single out material illustrating different aspects of past ludic culture and 3) to describe and determine the usefulness of photographs depicting rural children’s toys and games, found in the digital collection of the PAE, in the studies dedicated to the manifestations of past ludic culture. The text contributes to the discussion about the changes that gradually have been taking place in ethnography in the field of analyzing historical visual documents and deepening research on ludic culture. Brzezińska","doi":"10.23858/ep65.2021.2593","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.23858/ep65.2021.2593","url":null,"abstract":"This article explores changeable strategies used by men in their struggle for modernity and masculinity in contemporary Guinea-Bissau, which include wearing European clothes and showing signs of education. I employ Sherry Ortner’s concept of “serious games” to demonstrate how wearing fashionable clothes becomes a strategy in a game of status and prestige which is framed by the categories of „village people”, „town people” and emigrants, reflecting how local modern identity is shaped by the ideas of modernity and development, and by dreams of migration to Europe. The other side of the game, however, is, for men, the need to negotiate their masculinity. In the context of scarce material resources, fulfilling both of these goals poses a challenge and a contradiction for most Guinean men. As a result, symbolical meanings related to European clothes are sometimes strategically changed by men in their relations with women: through mockery, caricature and hence devaluation of the (otherwise shared) aspirations to modernity. In other cases, non-material attributes, such as signs of education, are foregrounded and employed as alternative strategies. Celem moich badań było przyjrzenie się kwestii pochodzenia przestrzennego (geograficznego), wyznaniowego i narodowościowego małżeństw na Kaszubach od lat 70. XIX w. do drugiej połowy XX w. i stwierdzenie czy uprawnione jest twierdzenie części lekarzy iż przyczyną dużej częstotliwości występowania tej choroby wśród Kaszubów jest izolacja spowodowana starymi tradycjami osadniczymi, małym napływ osób z zewnątrz, zawieraniem małżeństw w obrębie własnej miejscowości i grupy etniczo-regionalnej. Zajęłam się także wpływem choroby, a zwłaszcza jej potocznego określenia „gen kaszubski” na to tożsamość i obraz Kaszubów. Pokazuję iż choroba ta, a zwłaszcza jej niemedyczne określenie stygmatyzuje Kaszubów, podważa dumę etniczną, może stanowić źródło piętna i zranionej tożsamości. Pokazuję też, iż skutki społeczne - kulturowe deficytu enzymu LCHAD dotyczą nie tylko osób nią dotkniętych, ale całej grupy etniczno-regionalnej. \u0000Abstract \u0000LCHAD enzyme deficiency is a rare genetic disease that is relatively common in the Kashubian population. My research aimed to examine the issue of spatial (geographical), religious and national origin in marriages in Kashubia from the second half o the 19th century to the beginning of the 21st century to determine whether it is justifiable for some doctors to claim that the high frequency of this disease among Kashubians is caused by isolation due to settlement traditions, a small influx of new populations, endogamy within one’s place of habitat as well as their ethnic-regional group. I also focused on the influence of the disease, especially its colloquial term “the Kashubian gene”, on the identity and image of Kashubians.
