This requires identification of the PU with the help of different spectrum sensing techniques. In recent years, Cooperative Spectrum Sensing (CSS), which is meant to improve the trust of decisions made busy or idle channel and to overcome the hidden terminal problem, has gained a lot of attention. However, cooperative sensing incurs sensing overhead due to communication and energy consumption during sensing. This work considers the selection of an optimal number of SUs, which can guarantee reliable sensing operation while reducing the unnecessary energy consumption. To perform this selection, all the SUs receiving good Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) from the PU are selected first. Second, all uncorrelated SUs are selected from the first phase such that the shadowing effect is minimized. It is indicative in the simulation results that the proposed scheme can achieve a good probability of detection, with low probability of false alarm.","PeriodicalId":348924,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Globecom Workshops (GC Wkshps)","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128841553","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In particular, when a user is scheduled to receive information, other users harvest energy at the same time using the same signal. We consider the user-centric energy efficiency (UC-EE) as our performance metric, which has the sum-of-ratios structure and thus is nonconvex. We transform the nonconvex problem into an equivalently tractable problem by using suitable mathematical tools and then develop an iterative algorithm to find the globally optimal solution. Simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method compared with the benchmark schemes.","PeriodicalId":348924,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Globecom Workshops (GC Wkshps)","volume":"54 22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129232914","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Large antenna arrays and narrow beams are deployed at transceivers to exploit beamforming gain, which leads to significant system overhead if an exhaustive beam search is adopted. In this paper, we propose to learn the optimal beam pair index by exploiting the locations and sizes of the receiver and its neighboring vehicles (parts of the situational awareness for automated driving), leveraging machine learning tools with the past beam training records. MmWave beam selection is formulated as a classification problem based on situational awareness. We provide a comprehensive comparison of different classification models and various levels of situational awareness. Practical issues are considered in realistic implementations, including GPS inaccuracies, out-dated locations due to fixed location reporting frequencies and missing features with limited connected vehicles penetration rate. The result shows that we can achieve up to 86% of alignment probability with ideal assumptions.","PeriodicalId":348924,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Globecom Workshops (GC Wkshps)","volume":"146 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114420216","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

IoT envisions to provide a seamless and efficient way of interacting with real-world physical objects through the Internet which highly impacts modern day life. Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are primarily responsible for turning physical objects into communicating entities that can be remotely accessed and controlled, thus, providing the basis for smart solutions to all the human needs. To realize the concept of IoT, efficient data generation, collection, and presentation through WSNs are crucial issues. However, WSNs face numerous challenges mainly because of the resource-constrained and unreliable nature of nodes which may result in loss of valuable sensed data. Data replication is a promising solution to facilitate efficient data management in IoT-based sensor systems. This paper presents a survey of state-of-the-art data replication protocols for IoT-based sensor systems. To the best of our knowledge, our study is the first one that presents a detailed analysis and comparison of the existing solutions by classifying them into sub-categories of data retrieval, query balancing, system robustness, and data availability. We conclude by highlighting potential future research directions.","PeriodicalId":348924,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Globecom Workshops (GC Wkshps)","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115333408","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is shown that shaping only a single bit-level suffices to compensate for most of the shaping loss on the fading channels. A polar code based implementation of the proposed scheme is presented, where shaping is performed by using a precoder at the transmitter without increasing the decoding complexity. Simulation results show that performance improvements can be obtained compared to BICM- and MLC-based polar coding without shaping on Rayleigh fading channels.","PeriodicalId":348924,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Globecom Workshops (GC Wkshps)","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115821924","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thus, mmWave networks rely on directional narrow-beam transmissions to overcome severe path-loss. To mitigate the impact of transmission-reception directionality and provide uninterrupted network services, ensuring the availability of mmWave transmission links is important. In this paper, we proposed a new flexible network architecture to provide efficient resource coordination among serving basestations during user mobility. The key idea of this holistic architecture is to exploit the software-defined networking (SDN) technology with mmWave communication to provide a flexible and resilient network architecture. Besides, this paper presents an efficient and seamless uncoordinated network operation to support reliable communication in highly-dynamic environments characterized by high density and mobility of wireless devices. To warrant high-reliability and guard against the potential radio link failure, we introduce a new transmission framework to ensure that there is at least one basestation is connected to the UE at all times. We validate the proposed transmission scheme through simulations.","PeriodicalId":348924,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Globecom Workshops (GC Wkshps)","volume":"146 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114513744","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These power LEDs have a limited bandwidth of only several MHz. To conceive a practical receiver, we describe the LED transient response by a nonlinear dynamic differential equation from the physical mechanisms in the Quantum Well (QW) of Double Hetero-structured (DH) LEDs. It includes the transient nonlinear relation between the input current and injection electron concentration, as governed by the dynamic rate equation. Also, we consider the static nonlinear (typically quadratic) relation between the injection electron concentration and output optical power is described by a square operator. Further we consider the static nonlinear relation between the injection current and output optical power, caused by the efficiency droop. We propose a novel post-distorter to overcome LED nonlinearities for high-speed Pulse Amplitude Modulation (PAM)-4 systems. Its performance is validated with measurements of a commercial blue LED.","PeriodicalId":348924,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Globecom Workshops (GC Wkshps)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114687180","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Combinatorial Code Designs (CCDs) that produce deterministic access patterns have been shown to overcome this performance limit in MAC layer channel models, where the physical layer has been abstracted to a collision model. In this work, we demonstrate that CCDs remain a promising option for URLLC for a properly modelled physical layer with fading and collision recovery through diversity reception. We investigate uplink users arriving according to a Poisson process, attempting to directly transmit data packets in a grant-free manner. We measure the achievable rate using a system outage capacity formulation which takes into account the access intensity, the size of the data packets transmitted, and the packet error rate, with the packet loss rate constrained to be less than a given URLLC target. We compare random and deterministic access patterns by system simulation in a factory environment. The results show that considerable gains in system throughput can be achieved by using deterministic access patterns. Unlike random patterns, patterns based on CCDs have the potential to support considerable communication rates with very high success probability. With ideal channel estimation, CCDs enable an aggregate system spectral efficiency of 2 bps/Hz in a grant-free URLLC access scenario.","PeriodicalId":348924,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Globecom Workshops (GC Wkshps)","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114734757","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Pedestrians and cyclists are among the main road traffic crash victims. Despite the recent advances in traffic safety during the last decades, the number of fatalities is still high and its reduction is considered a priority by the United Nations. One of the goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, launched in 2015, is to halve the number of deaths and injuries from road traffic accidents by 2020. In this context, Cooperative Intelligent Transportation Systems (C-ITS) can play a decisive role, since they enable the coordination among the different traffic agents. In a vehicular network scenario, cars and VRUs may exchange information in order to prevent dangerous traffic situations. This connectivity can become even more important with the integration of the V2X technology in vulnerable user devices and the increasing market penetration of vehicular communications systems. For the given reasons, this work presents a roadmap on the development of C-ITS solutions based on V2X communications for VRUs road safety.","PeriodicalId":348924,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Globecom Workshops (GC Wkshps)","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126883865","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
