We then illustrate key concepts using Rogers' research on diffusion of innovations and technology transfer. We discuss how technical communication practitioners can use communication theories to guide the development of communication plans and produce communication messages. We close by discussing how technical communication researchers can use theory to guide their research and illustrate the need to advance communication theories.","PeriodicalId":348807,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference","volume":"283 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134356089","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study we analyze the expert judgments of 39 policy advises on the same issue. The judgments are given in three different forms. The results show that the judgments of the policy advices are not reliable. And there is little correspondence between the judgments and the registered comments; they are not directing to a specific pattern. This leads to the conclusion that a good judgment of professional writing is not possible. But there is a suspicion of the possible existence of a functional step in professional writing.","PeriodicalId":348807,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference","volume":"70 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124567160","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The problematic issue facing technical communication educators is that of developing these basic competencies and then assessing the program and its learners to determine if they are being developed. Through identification of these competencies and evaluation to determine if our graduates have acquired them, technical communication programs can achieve a measure of unity on which to build a platform of well educated professionals with common knowledge, skills and abilities. This paper will discuss an assessment model that identifies and measures these basic competencies.","PeriodicalId":348807,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124883659","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Microsoft Producer is a robust, cost-effective, readily mastered and widely available multimedia development tool for delivering dynamic informational presentations and instructional content in online courses. It has fulfilled important roles in informational-instructional delivery in both higher education and the corporate arena. MS Producer provides high fidelity narration and music, graphics, screen capture animations, text, and full motion video, and delivers this using streaming Internet technology. It is especially useful for archiving PowerPoint-based, narrated lectures and for building short, on-demand audiovisual archives of important content elements. MS Producer presentations are SCORM compatible, readily modified and well received by learners. Limitations include severely restricted browser compatibility, streaming media server requirement, and comparatively long download time. Although in wide use, MS Producer appears to have been dropped from further development and is no longer compatible with the current Microsoft Office (2007) suite.","PeriodicalId":348807,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122444103","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite all the enthusiasm around knowledge management (KM), many projects foundered because many users did not incorporate KM into their working practices, which caused duplicate work and revenue loss. Such businesses need answers to three questions: What exactly is knowledge management? Why is it important? How can we use it in real life situation to facilitate communication process? To provide answers, this paper first describes the differences among data, information, and knowledge. Next, it offers a working definition of knowledge management, along with various spectra of KM. Finally, the need to apply knowledge management into corporate internal communication is illustrated by an analysis of knowledge flow in a translation company to demonstrate how KM is deconstructed into knowledge creation, sharing, and transfer, thus facilitating corporate communication. Implications for practitioners to take away are also offered in the end.","PeriodicalId":348807,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference","volume":"126 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127325757","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study analyses some phenomena in telephone helpdesk calls, using conversational analysis as a methodological and theoretical framework. Helpdesk calls are characterized by the common goal of the helpdesk agent and the client to understand and solve the client's problem with a particular technical device or with computer software. Both parties cooperate in a complex manner to define and diagnose the problem, and to solve it. The paper identifies the typical structure of a helpdesk call and describes a number of strategies that the participants use to make the call successful.","PeriodicalId":348807,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126876093","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In contrast to traditional modular approaches to ethics pedagogy, micro-insertions introduce ethical issues by means of a \"low-dose\" approach. Following a description of the micro-insertion approach, we outline the workshop structure being used to teach engineering faculty and graduate students how to develop micro-insertions for graduate engineering courses. We also explain the role that technical communication faculty and graduate students are playing as part of the grant team, specifically in developing an Ethics In-Basket that will serve as a repository for micro-insertions.","PeriodicalId":348807,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130045248","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
