Though SS and CM have generated considerable interest in our field, we do not have reliable, empirical data on how widely and significantly these methods and tools are affecting the work lives of practitioners. In May 2007, the Society for Technical Communication awarded this author a research grant of $10,000 to fund a year-long study that will provide quantitative and qualitative data on how widely SS and CM are being used within technical communication and how these technologies are affecting practitioners in terms of routine tasks, workflow, required knowledge and skills, productivity, and job satisfaction. The conference presentation will summarize preliminary findings from interviews, site visits, and a pilot version of the survey.","PeriodicalId":348807,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134078072","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This graduate course lecture is a new attempt to teach and train graduate students how to write scientific and engineering papers in English so that their papers will be easily understood by native speakers of English. To get rid of the students' bad habits of directly translating Japanese original texts into English word-for-word, we pointed out that these translations will give an incomprehensible, funny, or incorrect impression on native speakers of English and introduced correction measures. For that purpose, differences in the writing styles and in the sentence structures of Japanese and English were discussed in detail: conclusions come first in English, but conclusions come last in Japanese; the three-step style of introduction, body, and conclusion in English versus the four-step style of ki-sho-ten-ketsu in Japanese. In addition, differences in ways of thinking (mind-set) in Japanese and English were discussed and it was stressed that English way of thinking should be used when writing in English. The remaining lectures are devoted to the proper style of technical papers and related grammatical points that Japanese engineering students should follow.","PeriodicalId":348807,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130201628","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Legal services, such as the Illinois Technology for the law and the public interest, address this need through online self-help services where users can access personalized legal aid. Usability is an important factor for such self-help Websites where users may have limited computer experience. This paper examines the usability of the national public automated documents Website for seniors, novice computer users, and legal advocates. We briefly review current design for statewide Websites and then apply usability metrics to tasks of the information search and retrieval process. We report on users' interaction with features of the system related to navigation, process flow, user expectations, and the successful retrieval of legal documents during a session. The particular strength of the insights provided by this explorative usability test and talk aloud protocols is that they refer to both informational sites that users primarily browse and a process-dependent information retrieval system. From these preliminary insights, designers can produce sites that take into account user mental models that impact their overall satisfaction.","PeriodicalId":348807,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference","volume":"2014 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127445039","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We tested for effects on usability, in particular on task effectiveness, task efficiency and user satisfaction. Motivational elements are textual additions or modifications to user instructions with the aim of motivating the reader, without changing the content of the actual instructions. The results of our studies showed that supplying motivation in user instructions can positively affect usability, but the presence of these effects seems to depend on the task at hand and on the characteristics of the user group. Our upcoming studies will focus on reading-to-do situations and on users with low confidence levels.","PeriodicalId":348807,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125776799","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
