Using a concept borrowed from linguistic theory, we propose a binary feature system for systematically analyzing dynamic Web interfaces. We offer an overview of distinctive feature theory and present nine candidate features for analyzing dynamic Web interfaces. We further demonstrate how these features are manifested in an analysis of four sample sites.","PeriodicalId":348807,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125542495","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For some, good solutions don't involve throwing more people at a task. Contrast this with Linus's Law, first coined by Eric Raymond, which claims that \"with many eyes, the bugs are few\". The claim is supported by the successful collaborative development model and robustness of the Linux operating system. In the past, typewriters and word processors might have been the equivalent of digital shovels. But several new collaborative authoring tools create new opportunities for adding eyes to the construction of documents. To avoid creating a new technology myth by suggesting that these tools will solve all of the problems associated with collaborative authoring (and without creating new ones), this paper explores some of these tools. We identify some of their strengths and weaknesses, look at how some are using them, and suggest some tasks for which each tool seems well suited.","PeriodicalId":348807,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125842002","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To confront the design with the costumers needs, a forum discussion with these costumers is organised. The results of this combined method were very satisfactory. The storylines brought the material back to the working processes and information of the units and the negotiation process made it possible to achieve a broad commitment. The final forum discussion was a helpful confrontation with the costumers.","PeriodicalId":348807,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126730429","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

VSTF was evaluated in yearlong, classroom- based, randomized controlled trials, with in-class reading sessions (25 minutes per session, twice a week), using electronic textbooks for high school students. Pretest- posttest analysis showed that, in each grade, VSTF students had significantly higher scores on nationally standardized (and conventionally formatted) reading proficiency tests over controls; effect sizes ranged from .41 to . 69 standard deviations, and the one-year growth in reading proficiency with VSTF was equivalent to 2 to 3 years' of additional growth in study and national controls. VSTF groups also significantly increased scores, with medium effect sizes, on standardized quizzes and examinations for comprehension and retention of the material in the textbooks.","PeriodicalId":348807,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference","volume":"69 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130801044","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To achieve this, a presenter needs to know the appropriate language and effective strategies for signaling transitions. With the aim of providing better guidance on signaling transitions in presentations, in this study we will first review the advice given in popular self-help guides aimed at native and nonnative speakers of English. Next, we will compare this advice with the actual language and strategies used by experienced presenters at international conferences through an analysis of presentation transcripts and video footage. Finally, we will discuss some of the implications of this research for instructors of scientific and technical presentation courses.","PeriodicalId":348807,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130923148","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper critiques the expedient view of information design by offering a brief history of information design, and then presenting an alternative perspective derived from experience design literature to show what might characterize an expanded notion of information design. This new model argues for addressing people's emotional, psychological, physical, and social needs, as well as their cognitive ones and thereby redefining a 'good' text as one that embraces the complexity of humanity. This expanded notion of information design embodies Jurgen Habermas' concept of communicative rationality which counters the ethic of expedience inherent in most information design literature and practice.","PeriodicalId":348807,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116136457","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unlike traditional parts of speech, these functional components have consistent and reliable identification tests. Our simplified approach better meets the standards of testability and usability, which our IEEE audience expects in other areas. We illustrate the utility of this simplified grammar with analyses of traditionally troublesome areas of EFL/ESP grammar instruction.","PeriodicalId":348807,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122074163","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
