The introduction points at the consequences of the absence of the novel from critical studies for a long time until it was re-published in 2011, and hints at other studies that are mainly dependent on Dr. Nāsir al-Dīn al-Asad’s summary of the novel, and consequently, on his comments and interpretations. In its first section, the research deals with al-Asad’s study of the novel, and uncovers its recurrent impact on latter studies. Then, it proposes another interpretation based on the fact that the Palestinian society, at the turn of the twentieth century, was an oral one, or in its best conditions, an oral society impregnated with writing. In its second section, the research introduces a theoretical framework on which this different interpretation is based which comes in two parts. The first part discusses Baydas’ theoretical concepts of the novel/story and its implied reader, and brings to attention the overall circumstances during which al-Wārith emerged. The second part exhibits the various distinctive features/modes of oral production. In its third section, the research transforms these oral features into thier applicable sphere by following their appearance in the novel; thus, explaining Baydas’ concepts and the critics’ repetitive comments. {"title":"Revelations of the ‘Other’ that Belongs to Christianity in Pre-Islamic Poetry from the Perspective of Culture Semiotics","authors":"Fathi Alshormani","doi":"10.35682/jjall.v18i2.439","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.35682/jjall.v18i2.439","url":null,"abstract":"This study incorporates \"culture semiotics\" to present an accurate reading of the revelations of the ‘Other’ that belongs to Christianity in pre-Islamic poetry, and it reveals the various signs that represent this ‘Other’ that belongs to Christianity in the aesthetic text in order to know the levels of self-awareness of the poet of the ‘Other’ that belongs to Christianity and the nature of the relationships between the pagan Bedouin culture and the Christian culture within the semiotic space of this text. The study is divided into two parts: a theoretical part which discusses the critical foundations of cultural semiotics theories, the relationship between the semiotics and cultural analysis of texts, and the position of the cultural system in the structure of the sign. A practical part which studies the semiotic cultural revelations of the ‘Other’ that belongs to Christianity in pre-Islamic poetry through three axes: the image of the ‘Other’ that belongs to Christianity as a cultural threat, the image of the ‘Other’ that belongs to Christianity as a source of enlightenment, and the image of the ‘Other’ that belongs to Christianity as a model of religiosity. The study concluded that the pre-Islamic poets were concerned about cultural identity, which made them insist on isolating the ‘Other’ that belongs to Christianity, and stigmatize it as weak. Despite all his knowledge leaps, scientific and technological progress, artificial intelligence, economic revolution, and modern revolutions, which were later represented in globalization that has made the world a small village, human happiness in the West and East is in clear regression, to the extent that man is no longer in harmony with himself and separated from his society. The economical and communication revolutions have contributed to the alienation of people from their human culture, and brought an unmistakable alienation phenomenon. This is the phenomenon of reification. Perhaps what the twentieth century has produced of modernity and capitalism has not only marginalized man, but rather killed him and revived things. That is why it is not surprising that poets approach the dispossessed man, seeing him characterized by rupture and surrender, even as he achieves some immediate individual pleasure at the expense of long-term collective happiness. This paper is based on a hypothesis that it tries to test. This hypothesis is the emergence of the phenomenon of reification and its representation in the poetry of one of the modernist poets, Muhammad Afifi Mater, due to its frequent use in his poetry with a questioning philosophical vision. The research consists of two parts: the first is theoretical that explains the concept of reification. The study tries to reveal those issues in the Play and to determine their implications. Among the important issues and phenomena that the Egyptian society suffers from and Saadia al-Adly has incorporated in her play are family division, material tyranny, religious ignorance, rejection of terrorism, psychological breakdown, and self-loathing. These phenomena were not common before in the Egyptian society, and they had a negative impact on the community and its safety, especially the city community as it is the most vulnerable to the rapid changes.
