Deploying these Unmanned Aerial Vehicles to cover targets is a complex problem since each target should be covered, while minimizing (i) the deployment cost and (ii) the UAV altitudes to ensure good communication quality. We also consider connectivity between the UAVs and a base station in order to collect and send information to the targets, which is not considered in many similar studies. In this paper, we provide an efficient optimal program to solve this problem and show the trade-off analysis due to conflicting objectives. We propose a fair trade-off optimal solution and also evaluate the cost of adding connectivity to the UAV deployment.","PeriodicalId":348060,"journal":{"name":"2017 Global Information Infrastructure and Networking Symposium (GIIS)","volume":"88 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126307166","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Open vSwitch (OVS) is the most prominent open-source solution implementing a virtual switch, while DPDK (Data Plane Development Kit) is a set of specialized libraries to enhance the performance. In particular, DPDK allows packets to be processed by batches. In this paper, we address the issue of modeling the behavior of a DPDK-based virtual switch. First, we investigate the influence of batch services on the overall performance of a virtual switch. Second, we extend two former analytical models to include the processing of packets by batches. We propose a simple means to do it, and we evaluate the accuracy of our solution on two different scenarios. Numerical results show that, despite its simplicity, our approach provides fairly good results when compared to simulation.","PeriodicalId":348060,"journal":{"name":"2017 Global Information Infrastructure and Networking Symposium (GIIS)","volume":"68 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126351423","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Appropriately excited mode field of the MM fiber provides optimal power budget in connections, leads to the decrease of insertion losses (IL) and achieves effective modal bandwidth (EMB), which is essential for high data rates. Crucial is especially the encircled flux (EF) parameter, which should be properly defined for combinations of variable optical sources and MM fiber infrastructure to provide proper mode-field distribution. In this paper, we present detailed investigation and measurements of the mode field distribution for short MM optical data center links with the emphasis on their reliability. Such characterization is essential for the design of large MM networks. Various scenarios were tested in terms of IL and mode-field distribution to reveal potential problematic scenarios. Furthermore, we focused via simulations and experiments on the estimation of particular defects and errors, which can realistically occur like eccentricity or connector misalignment. Their dependence on EF statistics and functionality of data center infrastructure was evaluated. Finally, we provide recommendations for data center systems and networks, using OM3 MM fiber connections.","PeriodicalId":348060,"journal":{"name":"2017 Global Information Infrastructure and Networking Symposium (GIIS)","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134640637","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nowadays, edge computing is operational in industrial and consumer-oriented scenarios. An important limitation of today's solutions, however, is that the used hardware and software platforms are proprietary and closed, and cannot easily be leveraged to perform other services beyond the specific business case. For instance, the interaction among different edge platforms or service extension by third parties is in general not supported. As a consequence, the opportunity for local stakeholders to provide innovative tailored edge service with these platforms face important barriers. In this paper we present edge microclouds deployed on local servers and an implementation using containers for service provision. We show how the adopted container approach facilitates the users to create and share services at the network edge. With the presented approach, third parties can deploy more tailored and customized services at the network edge, enabling to better fulfill specific local needs and constraints. It is also an opportunity for building cloud-based service provision with a pool of local resource-constraint edge devices.","PeriodicalId":348060,"journal":{"name":"2017 Global Information Infrastructure and Networking Symposium (GIIS)","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116953533","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To answer this question, researchers have developed plenty models depending on the assumption that said the contamination factor is a β coefficient, which is defined probabilistically, representing the infection rate. However, in the real life, the contagion process could depend on many factors like direct contact, indirect contact or proximity. In this paper, we use an epidemic model, SIS (Suspected, Infected, Suspected), that simulates in the framework of synthetic mobility models such as Random Waypoint (RWP), Gauss Markov (GM) and Truncated Levy Walk (TLW) and we show the impact of distance-proximity in the process of contamination.","PeriodicalId":348060,"journal":{"name":"2017 Global Information Infrastructure and Networking Symposium (GIIS)","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128024984","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, more mission-critical application areas such as energy, security and health care do not only demand low-power connectivity, but also highly reliable and guaranteed performance. While fulfilling these requirements under controlled conditions such as urban and indoor environments is relatively trivial, tackling the same obstacles in a more challenging and dynamic setting is significantly more complicated. In environments where infrastructure is sparse, such as rural or remote areas, specialized infrastructure-less ad-hoc solutions are needed, which provide long-range multi-hop connectivity to remote sensors and actuators. In this paper we propose a new general-purpose IoT platform based on a combination of Low-power Wireless Personal Area Network (LoWPAN) and multi-hop Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) technology. It supports reliable and guaranteed real-time data dissemination and analysis, as well as actuator control, in dynamic and challenging infrastructure-less environments. In this paper, we present the IoT platform architecture and an initial hard- and software prototype. Moreover, a use case based on real-time monitoring and training adaptation for cyclists is presented. Based on this case study, evaluation results are presented that show the ability of the proposed platform to operate under challenging and dynamic conditions.","PeriodicalId":348060,"journal":{"name":"2017 Global Information Infrastructure and Networking Symposium (GIIS)","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127813510","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, due to their inherited characteristics, HetVNets are rigid, difficult to manage and suffer from a lack of programmability, flexibility, and scalability. In this paper, we first highlight the limits of current HetVNet architectures and show what the emerging software-defined networking (SDN) paradigm can bring to overcome these limitations with a focus on some use cases. We also provide a taxonomy of existing software-defined heterogeneous vehicular networks architectures and discuss their limits. Based on that, we continue by proposing a new SDN-based architecture for HetVNet. It is a cluster-based architecture with a semi-centralized hierarchical control and an efficient fall back recovery mechanism, that functions in both infrastructure-less and infrastructure-based covered vehicular scenarios. Finally, we demonstrate the feasibility and the efficiency of the proposed architecture compared to the related SDN-based HetVNet architectures through simulation results.","PeriodicalId":348060,"journal":{"name":"2017 Global Information Infrastructure and Networking Symposium (GIIS)","volume":"270 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124376889","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the several technical aspects of WSNs is the node localization, the main task of nodes localization is to find out the coordinates of the nodes in a short time with a minimum of energy. The recent trend is based on metaheuristic to result this problem where Node localization is treated as an optimization problem and many approaches are proposed. Once of recent algorithms is Bat Algorithm who is based on sending pulses and locating prey via receiving echolocation. The features of Bat have made the algorithm popular and give more efficiency in literature, the most research of node localization is addressed to treat only localization error.
