Following a short description of the linear PZM applied in this study, the paper covers the analytical relationships of the buck driven push-pull parallel resonant inverter stage that includes novel single transistor direction switches. It is shown that the proposed topology is compatible with the drive requirements of the PZM powered from a low voltage (24 V). It is also demonstrated that, unlike simple resonant converters, the proposed topology is relatively insensitive to the resonant component values and that it can tolerate added capacitance as introduced when connecting a PZM to the driver via a long cable.","PeriodicalId":347959,"journal":{"name":"APEC 2000. Murita","doi":"10.1109/APEC.2000.822592","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/APEC.2000.822592","url":null,"abstract":"The power demand has been increasing year after year in Japan and a steep projection appears during daily peak-load periods particularly in high summer due to growing demand for space cooling, resulting in the problem of a great day versus night demand gap. Such a demand gap appearing daily and seasonally is a priority for power utilities to ensure reduced service costs and dependable power supply. The study was intended to demonstrate the feasibility of an energy storage system for load leveling based on the electric double-layer capacitor (EDLC), which is safer, has a longer service life and needs far less maintenance service than the secondary cell. The system as a whole works to store surplus energy from a commercial AC line in an EDLC bank during the nighttime and release such energy for use during the daytime peak-load period through a novel interface circuit. This paper particularly reports on the working principle and experimental results of the interface circuit, which comprises a voltage control oscillator (VCO), a bi-directional DC/DC converter, a bi-directional inverter, a coupling inductor, the whole circuit being subjected to PLL control, so that automatic transfer of energy between DC from an EDLC bank and AC from a commercial power line is allowed to take place in a simple, reliable and less costly manner on the basis of DC voltage as if electric charging and discharging take place in a full DC system.","PeriodicalId":347959,"journal":{"name":"APEC 2000. A fundamental analytical background is provided for use in analyses of systems of similar architecture. With this architecture, there is a potential for two sources of instability: (1) the relatively high-Q resonant tank formed by the input filter inductance and the array capacitance combined with excessive array voltage regulation loop-gain; and (2) positive feedback due to in-phase response produced by the current-mode converter at low frequencies. The model is based on the operational characteristics of power diodes and IGBTs. Laboratory experiments support the derived model and confirm that IGBT current tailing and diode reverse-recovery are indeed the most critical losses in a PWM converter. This idea makes use of a novel formula to: (a) select the small number of switching frequencies in the pool; and (b) provide a numerical value that serves as a \"figure of merit\" of the line-to-line voltage spectrum for comparing different PWM and RPWM techniques. The limited-pool RPWM is implemented in a Texas Instruments (TI) TMS320C240 Digital Signal Processor (DSP) controlling an inverter-driven three-phase induction motor (IM). The recently introduced rectifier compensated fundamental mode approximation (RCFMA) method is used to provide an accurate yet simple analysis of the circuit. This approximation is extended to provide a small signal model of the converter which is used to design the control loop. Using the series R-L model yields incorrect predictions of damping and losses that occur at high frequencies. This paper shows that a Cauer network model, developed for microwave applications, can be adapted to accurately model laminated busbar impedance over a wide frequency range.
