Data sources were transcripts of in-depth individual interviews and focus group discussions. Findings suggest that women are vulnerable to disasters due to their socio-economic and geographic conditions, as reflected in the four emerging central themes of psychological, economic, and physical distress; women’s roles in the domestic disaster phases; coping strategies, and the need for long-term and comprehensive disaster management programs. Coping strategies applied before, during, and after disasters have helped them survive disaster effects to a certain extent. However, they cannot escape the constant exposure to environmental hazards as long as there are geographic and socio-economic barriers. Hence, women’s high vulnerability to disasters is confirmed positively, as revealed in their shared narratives. Implications to policies in Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) include strengthening mechanisms to increase their involvement in the DRRM stages and increasing their resilience and those of their communities through sustainable programs and activities.","PeriodicalId":34726,"journal":{"name":"Ho Chi Minh City Open University Journal of Science Social Sciences","volume":"12 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78829626","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Limited research on how PO is carried out in Vietnamese higher institutions and how teachers experience PO in their educational contexts. This study investigates the experiences of PO among Vietnamese EFL teachers and their perceptions of benefits and challenges of PO. The study employed qualitative research method to collect data. Survey questionnaires were completed online by 22 EFL teachers working in different universities and colleges in Ho Chi Minh. The findings show that teachers’ perceptions and experiences of PO varied among academic institutions. The purposes of PO were different among different educational settings. PO sessions tend to focus more on evaluation purposes than on professional development purposes which aim to improve teaching performance of EFL teachers. Also, the procedures of implementing PO were not unanimous among institutions. The findings have several implications for stakeholders to reflect on the current practices of PO in their respective academic institutions with a view to improve the quality of this professional development tool.","PeriodicalId":34726,"journal":{"name":"Ho Chi Minh City Open University Journal of Science Social Sciences","volume":"20 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73795712","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although some research papers have been implemented to understand the impact of critical thinking on learners’ language skills, the study specifically investigates how critical thinking can affect speaking ability amongst learners of low-English levels who are from a non-English-speaking country, according to their perceptions. The participants are 190 undergraduate students whose English proficiency was pre-intermediate and who were enrolled in English for IELTS preparation programs at the Creative Language Center (CLC) of Ton Duc Thang University, Vietnam. A survey was sent to collect information about students’ learning experiences and opinions on their performance of speaking skills integrated with critical thinking. The findings highlighted some challenges when students used critical thinking while practicing oral communication skills, including their habits of learning and insufficient opportunities to practice the skills. Also, students’ awareness of the important role of critical thinking in improving their speaking performance and confidence was successfully noted.","PeriodicalId":34726,"journal":{"name":"Ho Chi Minh City Open University Journal of Science Social Sciences","volume":"15 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84373843","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper aims to investigate English teachers’ questioning strategies in connection with student learning behavior from a discourse perspective at the University of Foreign Languages, Hue University, Vietnam, within a case study of a Reading class at the English Department. One teacher and 30 students voluntarily participated in the study. Data were collected via audio recordings and classroom observation of 06 teaching hours for Reading classes. Critical Discourse Analysis Theory and Constructivist Learning theories were applied as the analysis and explanation frameworks. Results revealed that teachers employed various discourse strategies for questioning to enhance students learning behavior such as eliciting responses, checking comprehension, and soliciting agreement question functions; which helped arouse students’ interest in the upcoming reading texts, prepare them for vocabulary learning and background knowledge forming, and guide them through the process of reading comprehension skill practice. The paper also addressed implications and suggestions to help teachers exploit teachers’ questioning more effectively in language teaching.","PeriodicalId":34726,"journal":{"name":"Ho Chi Minh City Open University Journal of Science Social Sciences","volume":"63 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75171558","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To speak English effectively at an acceptable level for a non-native speaker, various sub-skills are considered such as lexical resources, grammatical structures, pronunciation, rhythm, intonation, and the like. Nevertheless, a vast number of remote learners at Ho Chi Minh City Open University (HCMCOU) seemed to struggle in representing their thoughts and speaking sub-skills. Thus, this study aims to explore the challenges encountered by remote learners, the effectiveness of Project-Based Learning (PBL) applied in teaching speaking skills online, and learners’ attitudes towards the applied project. To do this, a mixed research method was employed. Twenty-two remote learners participated in responding to the survey questionnaire, and five of them were randomly selected for interview in depth. The finding shows that the most of remote learners had problems of speaking sub-skills, inadequate environments for speaking practice, communication, and interaction. Also, PBL is found as a unique method that enables learners to solve their existing problems, and improve their speaking skills, and all remote learners expressed their positive attitudes of towards PBL applied in their learning process.","PeriodicalId":34726,"journal":{"name":"Ho Chi Minh City Open University Journal of Science Social Sciences","volume":"7 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87169972","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite the amount of research on Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL), little is known about non-English major students’ perceptions of the usage of MALL in Vietnamese universities. Using both qualitative and quantitative research approaches, this study explores the perceptions of non-English major university students at a Vietnamese university regarding the usefulness and ease of use of MALL in English learning based on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). 219 first- and second-year students were given a questionnaire to collect data, which was then combined with qualitative data acquired from semi-structured interviews and critically examined and analyzed. The results suggest that the majority of students regard MALL to be beneficial in terms of vocabulary acquisition, pronunciation enhancement, and ease of use. Consequently, it is highly suggested that MALL be implemented in the context of English teaching and learning at Vietnam’s higher education institutions.","PeriodicalId":34726,"journal":{"name":"Ho Chi Minh City Open University Journal of Science Social Sciences","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91169761","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To date, little research explores how Vietnamese EFL (English as a foreign language) teachers perceive cultural teaching during the Covid-19 pandemic. To fill such gaps in the literature, this study was conducted on 64 EFL high school teachers in Tra Vinh Province with a questionnaire and 06 participants with an in-depth interview to explore their perceptions of cultural teaching during the Covid-19 pandemic, especially when there is a reduction in the contents of the new curriculum. This article applied the framework of Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC) adapted from Byram, Gribkova, and Starkey (2002) and the Cultural Iceberg framework to analyze Vietnamese EFL high school teachers’ strategies in teaching cultural content. The findings revealed that teachers still have a positive view of the role of cultural teaching, and they still teach cultural knowledge despite the reduction of contents in English textbooks. Effective strategies applied when teaching online were also revealed.","PeriodicalId":34726,"journal":{"name":"Ho Chi Minh City Open University Journal of Science Social Sciences","volume":"2 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85001043","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Considering the complexity of their learning demands and the intricacies of community lives, the need for Community Engagement (CE) has become increasingly urgent. Additionally, there is no study on CE among senior high school learners initiated yet within the country. It prompted the researcher to investigate the effects of CE as a learning platform on the knowledge, skill, and attitude of learners. Descriptive survey research, using a validated self-made questionnaire was utilized in public and private schools in Maasin City, Southern Leyte, Philippines. After administering the questionnaire to the respondents, central tendency measures were used for statistical data analysis. It was found that learners acquired knowledge, skill, and attitude after their CE. A few statements for each aspect highlighted the needed enhancements to improve CE as a learning modality for learners. Several recommendations for further research on CE were provided. Ultimately, this will lead to development a more contextualized and holistic learning strategy using CE.","PeriodicalId":34726,"journal":{"name":"Ho Chi Minh City Open University Journal of Science Social Sciences","volume":"55 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84754001","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
