There were 15 children from different age groups who were studied: first age group (1.0 - 1.6 years old); second age group (1.7 - 4.0 years old); and third age group (4.1 - 7.0 years old). The participants were grouped according to the phonological stages of Ingram and David (1989). The first age group is the first 50-word phonology stage; the second age group is the phonology of single morphemes stage; and the third age group is the completion of the phonemic inventory stage. The child-adult interactions were recorded during the child’s free play at home. The children’s utterances were then transcribed. The result showed different phonological processes that dominated in the utterances of children in each age group. The final consonant deletion was the most occurring process in the first age group; stopping came out to be the dominant process in the second age group; gliding of liquids was prevalent in the third age group. This study concluded that children’s versions of adult language words are indeed phonologically simpler. In the process of developing speech, children often use phonological deviations in their speech production.","PeriodicalId":34726,"journal":{"name":"Ho Chi Minh City Open University Journal of Science Social Sciences","volume":"77 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88788623","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As schools and learning institutions around the world were forced to transition to online classrooms, teachers had to find new ways to reach their students and engage them in an educational environment. This study was conducted to synthesize the various researches about the impact of a pandemic on the constructivism theory of learning. This paper used the general principle of constructivism to conduct the synthesis review. The findings indicated that there was disruption in student engagement but collaboration among students was maintained. Also, the process of lesson contextualization was interrupted as classes were moved to online platforms. Teachers have used various tools to check the integrity of the students’ outputs and literature suggest that outputs have been upright and reliable. The support of the parents to the learning of the students was perceived to be enhanced. Hence, the constructivism approach was taken to a new level and was truly reshaped by the pandemic.","PeriodicalId":34726,"journal":{"name":"Ho Chi Minh City Open University Journal of Science Social Sciences","volume":"51 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74592508","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Yet, little evidence has been given on this approach among English majors in the setting of Vietnam. The current cross-sectional study, therefore, is an effort to fill up the gap by exploring students’ levels of self-directedness in learning and their correlation with academic performance at a state university. The study employed the Self-Rating Scale of Self-Directed Learning (SRSSDL) with five domains consisting of 60 items developed by Williamson (2007) to get responses from 90 English-majored students of 04 cohorts. The data were then analyzed through SPSS, using Independent-sample T-test and One-way ANOVA. Results of the study evidenced that (1) Investigated students were found to be at moderate and high levels of SDL, (2) No difference in SDL scores was found between male and female students, (3) No considerable difference in SDL scores was found among students of different academic years in the same program, (4) There was a direct correlation between students’ SDL level and their academic performance. Based on the findings, recommendations are well elaborated as references for teachers who are considering leveraging their students’ self-directedness in learning. The study hopefully contributes to the existing literature on self-directed learning in language education.","PeriodicalId":34726,"journal":{"name":"Ho Chi Minh City Open University Journal of Science Social Sciences","volume":"2 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88074643","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Peer feedback, where students analyze and suggest revisions to each other’s work (Sukumaran & Dass, 2014), is a worthwhile alternative to teacher-based feedback, and its benefits in academic writing have been thoroughly examined. With great convenience, Google Classroom Peer Review (GCPR) recently began to capture teachers’ attention as an innovative online peer feedback tool. This study conducted a quasi-experiment to determine the impact of online peer feedback (OPFB) via GCPR on 32 first-year students and their attitudes toward online peer feedback. Three writing exercises as well as a questionnaire were used to gather the information. The findings show that the experimental group significantly improved their vocabulary and grammar usage in writing compared to the 32 students in the control group. The experimental group expressed their positive opinions of OPFB, regarding free selection and assigned-pair feedback. Additionally, the difficulties and recommendations that the study’s participants gave have greatly enhanced the use of OPFB. The research is eager to offer valuable recommendations for enhancing learners’ academic writing proficiency in further studies because of its practical efficacy.","PeriodicalId":34726,"journal":{"name":"Ho Chi Minh City Open University Journal of Science Social Sciences","volume":"61 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77268014","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Health production theory was used to form the analytical framework for the study. The data set of 300 surveyed elderly people, which was randomly drawn from the list of 841,000 older people in HCMC by Excel random function, was used for quantitative analysis, including Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and linear regression. Research results show that gender and marital status are not statistically significant while education, employment, bonding, bridging, and linking social capital statistically significant impact on the quality of life of the elderly. Specifically, the level of education improves the quality of life while employment reduces the quality of life. This finding is an important implication for policies related to the retirement age of employees. The research results have also provided empirical evidence on the potential of social capital, a resource existing in the network of relationships, in improving the quality of life besides other traditional resources. This finding is an important basis for policymakers in mobilizing social capital resources in the context of resource scarcity.","PeriodicalId":34726,"journal":{"name":"Ho Chi Minh City Open University Journal of Science Social Sciences","volume":"23 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73436771","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, storytelling application in VYLs classrooms may be challenging since these learners possess unique characteristics in terms of second language acquisition, which might cause a variety of difficulties for teachers. This paper examines the difficulties Vietnam - USA Society English Center’s teachers encounter during their storytelling application to teach VYLs. Accordingly, 60 teachers at the language school, who were selected based on their teaching experience, participated in the study. An online survey was carried out in order to find out the participants’ opinions on storytelling application challenges regarding the teaching method, the learners’ characteristics, and the materials. Additionally, in-depth interviews were conducted with twelve randomly chosen teachers to better understand their rationale and suggestions for those difficulties. For data analysis, descriptive statistics were calculated for questionnaire information while the qualitative responses were transcribed and put into themes. The results revealed that the participants encountered certain challenges while delivering storytelling lessons which mainly stemmed from the students and other subjects namely teachers and materials. The findings from this study may help teachers to mitigate the challenges of the storytelling lesson.","PeriodicalId":34726,"journal":{"name":"Ho Chi Minh City Open University Journal of Science Social Sciences","volume":"338 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80676916","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study identified the general ideas that emerged from the Bisaya memes including the types and functions of Bisaya humor. Using the qualitative and research methods, the results revealed the general ideas which included health practices, security, and health behavior. Comparison, pun, and exaggeration predominated which could be attributed to the Filipinos’ creativity and fondness of vivid images and by virtue of its repressive colonial history. For carnivalesque functionality, the exposition of social inequities, therapy, and subversion of social order prevailed. These imply the Filipinos’ dissatisfaction with the government’s programs, fight against information disorders, and parodying hierarchic authority in a comical manner. Consequently, memes cannot reflect Filipinos’ knowledge of the pandemic because this is a new experience for us. Memes can express the basic needs of the people/platform to express our experiences brought by the pandemic. Lastly, humorous memes serve a dualistic function in the study: they both delight and criticize.","PeriodicalId":34726,"journal":{"name":"Ho Chi Minh City Open University Journal of Science Social Sciences","volume":"32 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76102729","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study explores college students’ preferred online teaching styles conceptualized by Rodriguez and Fahara. It also investigates and assumes no significant relationship exists between online teaching styles and students’ age, sex, or degree program. Three-hundred-three students from The College of Maasin participated in the study via Zoom. Utilizing a Google Form, data from the validated questionnaire was collected. According to the findings, students favored the “designer-oriented” style. Their age and sex correlate with their online teaching styles. However, insufficient evidence cannot establish a correlation between degree programs and online teaching styles. The paper also addressed implications and recommendations regarding how school administrators can assist instructors in adapting their teaching strategies to students’ preferred online teaching style, as well as how instructors can incorporate age-appropriate and sex-sensitive activities in their instruction in online distance education. In conclusion, this study provides a case study for future reference.","PeriodicalId":34726,"journal":{"name":"Ho Chi Minh City Open University Journal of Science Social Sciences","volume":"34 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78772761","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Discourse awareness, conceptualized as a classroom pedagogy, can improve students’ language capacity and has gained popularity over time. Our literature review suggested that there has been little research into this domain locally in Vietnam. This paper aims to discuss the ecology of the concept, examine its developments in Vietnamese tertiary education, and make some arguments for raising students’ discourse awareness in teaching and learning English. It introduces the literature review on discourse awareness in Vietnam, which presents an overview of the supportive role of discourse awareness development in English language teaching and learning. Findings outlined how discourse awareness-raising activities have extensively and successfully been exploited in language classrooms through teaching and learning practices, teacher education, literacy development, and maximizing the cultural competence of language learners. Since then, it is reasonable to hold a strong belief that discourse awareness can serve as an enabling tool to facilitate students’ communication.","PeriodicalId":34726,"journal":{"name":"Ho Chi Minh City Open University Journal of Science Social Sciences","volume":"18 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73957401","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
