En el presente estudio, se determinó la composición de la dieta de P. argus y la presión de depredación que ejerce sobre los gastrópodos de las regiones pesqueras Santa Cruz del Sur (SCrso) y golfo de Batabanó (GB), Cuba. Mediante arrastres se cuantificó la densidad y diversidad de gastrópodos, que, basado en la abundancia de langostas, sirvió para estimar el impacto de la depredación. Se capturaron 250 langostas: 62 en SCrso octubre 2012, 136 en el GB febrero 2014 y 52 en el GB julio 2018. La vacuidad fue similar en SCrso (38,7%) y en el GB (38,0%). Se registraron 13 categorías tróficas, las más frecuentes: opérculos (48,8%) y restos de crustáceos (48,0%), de conchas (47,2%) y vegetales (35,0%), demostrando que la dieta se compone principalmente de moluscos y crustáceos. La frecuencia de ocurrencia de vegetales sugiere consumo no accidental. Se identificaron 17 especies de moluscos, siendo Tegula fasciata, Phrontis antillarum, Aliger gigas, Turbo castanea y Chione cancellata las más frecuentes. La mayor tasa de depredación fue sobre las especies T. fasciata (3,36), P. antillarum (0,54) y A. gigas (0,45). La presión de depredación fue 0,92 gastrópodos langosta-1 en SCrso y 3,31 gastrópodos langosta-1 en el GB, lo que según las respectivas densidades de langostas (3.546 langostas km-2 y 3.837 langostas km-2) y gastrópodos (3,76 ind. m-2 y 1,45 ind. m-2), demostró que P. argus consume 0,087% de los gastrópodos en SCrso y 0,887% en el GB. This study estimated the length-weight relationship (LWR) and relative condition factor (Krel) in P. laticlavius. The equation for length-weight relationship was TW= 0.02 TL3.01 for the Overall category, and the relative condition factor was 1.28. A total of 379 fish (3-45.6 cm total length) were collected in the southwestern coast of the Gulf of California using harpoon (for large fishes) and hand net (for small fishes), of which 181 were females (20.2-45.6 cm), 137 males (20.6-43.4 cm), and 61 juveniles (3-19.5 cm). Allometric coefficient b of LWR for the Overall category suggested isometric growth (b = 3.01), positive allometric growth for juveniles (b = 3.14), and negative allometric growth for adults (2.75). Results of Krel showed higher values for females during the warm season. The population showed a good nutritional condition, mainly in the warm season. This work is the first to estimate LWR and Krel for P. laticlavius, which will inform stock assessment and the management of this species in the Gulf of California.","PeriodicalId":347046,"journal":{"name":"Revista de Biología Marina y Oceanografía","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133705796","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This species has a three-stage sexual life cycle, as well as asexual and vegetative reproduction, and is commercially important as it is a valuable source for producing agar. However, basing the crops exclusively on clonal reproduction and vegetative propagation has led to a reduction in their genotypic diversity, an increase in their susceptibility to infection by epiphytes, and a decrease in their quality. Thus, it is important to establish indoor cultures of G. chilensis from thalli with a mixed reproductive regime (sexual and asexual) that maintains the genetic variability of the cultivars. In this study, the biomass, growth rate, and productivity of indoor cultures of G. chilensis were evaluated (as a first approach) using various culture media (i.e., von Stosch medium (VS), Basfoliar® Aktiv (BF), and mixtures of VS and BF, namely, VS/BF-A and VS/BF-B). The VS/BF-A medium showed the best results in terms of biomass (51.8 ± 3.7 g m–2), growth rate (4.55 ± 0.43 %d–1), and productivity (14 g m–2 d–1), including the occurrence of thalli with cystocarps. The positive results using the VS/BF-A medium could be attributed to the fact that BF provides different elements (K, Cu, Mo, and Zn) that are crucial, since they are involved in numerous physiological functions in the algae, and also to the N:P ratio utilized (1:1), which positively affects growth and productivity. This information provides pivotal updated knowledge regarding cultures of G. chilensis under controlled conditions, promoting its successful cultivation for productive purposes.","PeriodicalId":347046,"journal":{"name":"Revista de Biología Marina y Oceanografía","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127025068","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Climate oscillations, East Atlantic (EA) and North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), have a major impact on the Northern Hemisphere climate and weather conditions. The initial hypothesis of present study is that if it is considering the southern frontier, each stock will be differentially affected by both climatic oscillations, which would imply the existence of a strong border. However, a similar effect on both sides of the border would result in a permeable barrier. The results suggest that the combined effects of EA and NAO affect both the North and the South Atlantic swordfish stocks in similar ways, and consequently, the location of the border may reside farther north than the current management boundary at 5ºN.","PeriodicalId":347046,"journal":{"name":"Revista de Biología Marina y Oceanografía","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122749572","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, the macrobenthic community associated with a shipwreck in the Strait of Magellan, the DAP Mares, is described for the first time. Species richness and functional group richness were estimated, and general linear models were used to test the prediction that diversity varied systematically with depth. The most speciose and abundant groups were echinoderms, molluscs, sponges, and tunicates. The most abundant trophic type was suspension feeders. Species richness changed significantly with depth, being similar between the upper and middle zones but decreasing at the deepest zone. Neither functional group richness nor functional dispersion (Rao’s quadratic entropy) varied with depth, suggesting that not all aspects of macrobenthic diversity respond equally to this variable. The biodiversity observed was consistent with that described for natural hard substrates in the Strait of Magellan. Thus, this vessel could represent a good model to study patterns of community structure.","PeriodicalId":347046,"journal":{"name":"Revista de Biología Marina y Oceanografía","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132617174","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

En 2010 fue reportado por primera vez en las costas venezolanas, y en 2013 ya era común en zonas arrecifales. El objetivo del presente estudio fue evaluar la abundancia y la ecología trófica del pez león en el Parque Nacional Morrocoy, y comparar su abundancia con la de otras especies nativas. En 2013 se realizaron censos visuales y recolectaron especímenes en diferentes hábitats (arrecifes, praderas de fanerógamas y manglares) y estratos de profundidad (1-3 m, 6-9 m, 12-15 m). Los resultados mostraron una alta variabilidad en la abundancia, con una densidad promedio de 46,30 (± 42,31 DE) peces∙ha-1 en arrecifes, mientras que en praderas de fanerógamas y manglares no se observó la presencia de la especie. Su densidad no difirió entre estratos de profundidad y fue significativamente mayor a la de las especies nativas censadas (familias Muraenidae y Serranidae). Su dieta estuvo compuesta de peces y crustáceos, con una mayor proporción de peces en especímenes de mayor tamaño. Las familias de peces más abundantes dentro del parque, Labridae, Haemulidae y Gobiidae, formaron parte de su dieta. Dadas las características del pez león como depredador generalista, un aumento de su población posiblemente afectaría significativamente la abundancia de peces nativos de las familias más representadas en su dieta, y la estructura y funcionamiento de estos sistemas arrecifales.","PeriodicalId":347046,"journal":{"name":"Revista de Biología Marina y Oceanografía","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117013521","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Vive adherida a sustratos duros en sistemas intermareales y submareales someros desde el norte de Chile hasta la Bahía de Concepción. Al parecer, su reproducción es principalmente asexual, sin una fase larval, por lo que se ha propuesto que su dispersión ocurre mediante un mecanismo de desprendimiento y re-adhesión al sustrato, el cuál puede ser estimulado por condiciones bióticas y abióticas. En este trabajo se evaluó el efecto de la arena sobre dicho mecanismo de dispersión, para lo cual se instalaron colectores de sedimento en 14 puntos de muestreo, en la localidad de Lirquén, en el extremo sudeste de la Bahía de Concepción (el límite sur de distribución de esta especie en el Pacífico SE). Los resultados indicaron que la densidad de anémonas disminuye exponencialmente con la cantidad de sedimento, el cuál correspondió principalmente a arenas finas y medianas (i.e., entre 0,125 y 0,5 mm de diámetro). Experimentos realizados en laboratorio indican que anémonas adheridas a sustratos con mayor cantidad de arena tardan menos tiempo en desprenderse, mientras que aquellas adheridas a sustratos sin arena demoran el triple de tiempo en hacerlo. Los resultados sugieren que las anémonas podrían percibir la presencia de arena como condiciones poco favorables, estimulando el desprendimiento de los individuos en busca de hábitats más propicios. También se discute el rol de la arena en la dispersión de la especie a larga distancia.","PeriodicalId":347046,"journal":{"name":"Revista de Biología Marina y Oceanografía","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123963210","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
