Plane Poiseuille flow, i.e. flow between two infinite parallel plates is one of the simplest and best understood cases of fluid dynamics. Controlling this flow is, however, still a very challenging problem, even if it is assumed that deviations from the steady-state are small enough for the governing equations to be linearized. Recent work has shown that robust control of 2D channel flow is possible without a spatial periodicity assumption. This paper first executes an Hinfin based robust control law design for the 2D case and then proceed to the relatively open problem of assessing the resulting performance using a Navier Stokes CFD solver as a model of the 'real' process. A dynamical model is presented for the position estimates for relative and absolute localization. The control input for the dynamical estimator system is derived using the concept of potential field. The convergence of the estimator system to a least squares solution is guaranteed using Lyapunov theory. Separate control algorithms for relative and absolute localization are developed which guarantee the convergence of the position estimates. The second step consists in finding a methodology for the computation of the losses of the inverter. Then a prototype board has been build and a numerical methodology that identifies the characteristic impedance of the pan+inductor system has been found. The proposed scheme provides detection and identification of sensor, actuator and/or system component failures, dynamic system state estimation and system performance recovery. Fault detection and identification is carried out using radial basis function (RBF) neural network and interacting multiple model (IMM) estimation. The RBF-NN is used to form a statistical model of nominal or faulty data and estimate the mode-conditional probability densities as the choice of likelihood function. The IMM mechanism carries out the interaction among mode-based filters, update the mode probability and provide the overall state estimate as the control input. Eigenstructure assignment (EA) technique is used for the reconfigurable controller design. In the planned 3-aircraft flight configuration, a radio control (R/C) pilot maintains manual control of the `leader' aircraft while two autonomous `follower' aircraft maintain a pre-defined position and orientation with respect to the lead vehicle. The flight-testing program associated with this effort was quite substantial and involved approximately 100 sorties involving all three aircraft models in the program. Initial flight-testing phases evaluated a variety of issues, including; aircraft handling qualities, dynamic characteristics, electronic payload performance; specifically the data acquiring capabilities and the real time execution of control laws. The problem is addressed using a state-space formulation in the discrete-time domain. The proposed approach is based on the use of a self-tuning external model which is able to provide an online estimate of the disturbance. Two adaptive algorithms that provide the disturbance parameters estimates are presented, the first one based on RWLS algorithm and the second one based on the Kalman filter.
