Odoevsky’s novella Sebastian Bach, the fi nal one in the cycle House of Madmen, a project the writer worked on during the 1830s. Later, the stories from this cycle were incorporated into the novel Russian Nights. As a part of the new project, they were edited by the author to meet his current goals. This later edition is generally used by researchers when analyzing the stories about the «genius madmen». The purpose of the article is to return to the author’s original idea and offer a new rendition of the image of Sebastian Bach, as based on the early text (1835).","PeriodicalId":347003,"journal":{"name":"Russkaya Literatura","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127087132","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A number of previously unknown facts of the writer’s biography are introduced to the academic community for the fi rst time, e. g. the permission to practice medicine he received in 1876 from the Meshchovskaya County Medical Board, his unsuccessful attempt to take the position of a zemstvo doctor in the same county in 1877, at a time when the author of «Byzantium and Slavyanism» seemed to have long abandoned his «professional path».","PeriodicalId":347003,"journal":{"name":"Russkaya Literatura","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126621232","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A. Nekrasov’s poem «Noch’. Uspeli my vsem nasladit’sia…» («Night. We had ample time to enjoy it all…»). The poem is understood as a text in which, according to the principle of counterpoint, intimate and social discourses merge. The article shows that such a synthesis was supported by the ideology and practices of Nekrasov’s entourage of the 1840s — late 1850s. Fictitious marriages, triple alliances, communal experiments with sexuality were the pertinent historical background of the poem. The civil and erotic energy of an individual was consecutively connected with the works of N. G. Chernyshevskii, the dialogue with which is found in «Noch’. Uspeli my vsem nasladit’sia…». Still, the radical sexual experiments of the Russian intellectuals of the 1840–1860s faced insoluble internal contradictions, and the very idea of a strong connection between the civil and the intimate suffered a historical defeat, which led to the marginalization of the erotic reading of Nekrasov’s poem.","PeriodicalId":347003,"journal":{"name":"Russkaya Literatura","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126729294","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
