As a consequence of international and national standards requirements, the insertion of an EMI filter in power electronic converters assembly is today a common practise. In this paper the EMI characterization of the power conversion system that manages the power flows between the generation and storage units of a hybrid vehicle is presented. With the purpose of reducing conducted emissions and designing a proper EMI filter, the overall noise has been separated into its common mode (CM) and differential mode (DM) components. Experimental results underline the importance of considering CM and DM noises separately in order to minimize the filter components count and size.","PeriodicalId":345557,"journal":{"name":"2008 International Symposium on Power Electronics, Electrical Drives, Automation and Motion","volume":"286 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-06-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115722822","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The solution is based on a system that consists of a high-speed turbine, coupled to a three-phase induction generator, an AC/AC converter and a supervisory control unit. The function of the system is to utilize the energy content of some working medium by a special high speed turbine that converts the energy content of the working medium into electric energy by the generator and the AC/AC converter. Various waste energy sources can also be utilized by applying the system, eg. energy that can be obtained during the process of pressure reduction in steam, gas and fluid networks. The electric power generated by the system can be fed back to the utility mains or it can be used in stand-alone mode to supply a selected group of loads. The paper considers the special properties of the system mainly in connection with the unusual behavior of the ultrahigh-speed induction generator. The requirements against the AC/AC converter are also overviewed. Control strategies of the system to ensure optimum and reliable performance are compared.","PeriodicalId":345557,"journal":{"name":"2008 International Symposium on Power Electronics, Electrical Drives, Automation and Motion","volume":"81 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-06-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125195497","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The supply exhibits the following advantages: (a) The main circuit uses a kind of unit-parallel structures, so it can gain higher output current amplitude which can be adjusted to load variety. (b) Inductance components were used to transform energy and so these units can output sharper pulse-form constant current. (c) By applying soft-switching technology, security of switching component was increased and switching losses was reduced. (d) Pulse width modulation (PWM) method was used, that can regulate the amplitude, frequency and duty cycle of output pulse current independently. In this paper, the simulation without and with snubber was carried out; the effects of snubber on the switching losses of power component and supply were examined. A novel positive lossless snubber with absorption transformer was proposed.","PeriodicalId":345557,"journal":{"name":"2008 International Symposium on Power Electronics, Electrical Drives, Automation and Motion","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-06-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116909569","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The converter sends the available photovoltaic energy to a battery pack thanks to an input control loop that reads the input voltage and limits the output current of the converter, thus fixing the photovoltaic panel voltage to its maximum power value. The MPPT is achieved through a microcontroller based PAO (Perturb And Observe) algorithm. The converter is capable of driving two separate battery packs thanks to two onboard solid-state switches, thus allowing a longer life cycle and a better energy management.","PeriodicalId":345557,"journal":{"name":"2008 International Symposium on Power Electronics, Electrical Drives, Automation and Motion","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-06-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127166127","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Only four parameters must be defined to obtain the machine: output power, rated voltage, frequency and number of pole pairs. firstly, geometric, electric and magnetic characteristics are obtained. Secondly, an accurate calculation of the sized machine is done. In order to check the influence in machine performance any variable can be modified in optimization loops. All this procedure has been implemented using MATLABreg obtaining different prototypes in a very short time, reducing significantly RPMSM design process. The obtained geometry is exported to a finite element method software where the geometry, mesh, material characteristics and electrical circuit are automatically generated. Finally all the procedure has been contrasted and validated through the construction and testing of a laboratory prototype.","PeriodicalId":345557,"journal":{"name":"2008 International Symposium on Power Electronics, Electrical Drives, Automation and Motion","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-06-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115081433","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A standard truck alternator (28V 100A) had been chosen to make the tests, which was carried out in a custom adaptor attached to a 6 KW DC motor bench. The alternator curves families were obtained varying the rotor speed between 5000 and 12500 RPM, with field voltages from 0 to 28 Volts. The tests show that it is possible to obtain output power well beyond the machine nominal rating, making it a useful alternative for power generation systems.","PeriodicalId":345557,"journal":{"name":"2008 International Symposium on Power Electronics, Electrical Drives, Automation and Motion","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-06-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122414901","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The current switching frequency is reduced taking advantage of three-level commutation by a double hysteresis-band current-control strategy imported from multilevel converters studies. Furthermore, an additional reduction of the semiconductor switching frequency is accomplished by modifying the standard semiconductor switching pattern for balancing power dissipation between upper and lower devices. An overall reduction of switching losses in a factor of 2 to 4 is achieved in this manner. The system control strategies are exposed in detail and experimental results for a 200 kVA grid-side converter of a switched reluctance drive are presented to better show the concepts involved.","PeriodicalId":345557,"journal":{"name":"2008 International Symposium on Power Electronics, Electrical Drives, Automation and Motion","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-06-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114449619","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Whilst traditionally, circuit-based models for lead-acid batteries centre on the well-known Randles' model, here the Randles' model is mapped to an equivalent circuit, demonstrating improved modelling capabilities and more accurate estimates of circuit parameters when used in Subspace parameter estimation techniques. Combined with Kalman Estimator algorithms, these techniques are demonstrated to correctly identify and converge on voltages associated with the battery State-of-Charge, overcoming problems such as SoC drift (incurred by coulomb-counting methods due to over-charging or ambient temperature fluctuations). Online monitoring of the degradation of these estimated parameters allows battery ageing (State-of-Health) to be assessed and, in safety-critical systems, cell failure may be predicted in time to avoid inconvenience to passenger networks. Due to the adaptive nature of the proposed methodology, this system can be implemented over a wide range of operating environments, applications and battery topologies.","PeriodicalId":345557,"journal":{"name":"2008 International Symposium on Power Electronics, Electrical Drives, Automation and Motion","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-06-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117000624","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main motivation of the research is to develop a maintenance free energy source for ubiquitous electronics, such as wireless sensors or sensor networks. The on-line condition monitoring of electric motors requires also sensors that are installed at the motor. In this case, the energy required by sensors could be harvested from a magnetic field. In this article, current transformer based energy harvesting is considered. A switch-mode power supply utilizing current transformer is designed. It is tested in laboratory with the mains supply and variable speed drive. According to the tests carried out, the current transformer based power sources are a feasible alternative to supply the electronics attached to an electric motor.","PeriodicalId":345557,"journal":{"name":"2008 International Symposium on Power Electronics, Electrical Drives, Automation and Motion","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-06-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130342969","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
