The module is designed to host a series of sensors controlled and managed by a data acquisition and control system able to perform first-level data quality checks. The prototype includes semiconductor methane sensors, an H2S sensor and a CTD for temperature, salinity, pressure recording, as well as interfaces for additional sensors. GMM was deployed in April 2004 within an active gas-bearing pockmark in the Gulf of Patras (Greece), at a water depth of 42 m. Through a submarine cable linked to an onshore station, it was possible to remotely check, via direct phone connection, GMM functioning and to receive data in near-real time. Recordings were carried out in two consecutive campaigns over the periods April-July 2004, and September 2004-January 2005, amounting to a combined dataset of ca. 6.5 months. This represents the first long-term monitoring ever done on gas leakage from pockmarks by means of CH4+H2S+T+P sensors. The results show frequent T and P drops associated with gas peaks, more than 60 events in 6.5 months, likely due to intermittent, pulsation-like seepage. This seepage \"pulsation\" can either be an active process driven by pressure build-up in the pockmark sediments, or a passive fluid release due to hydrostatic pressure drops induced by bottom currents cascading into the pockmark depression. Redundancy and comparison of data from different sensors were fundamental to interpret subtle proxy signals of temperature and pressure which would not be understood using only one sensor.","PeriodicalId":345403,"journal":{"name":"2007 Symposium on Underwater Technology and Workshop on Scientific Use of Submarine Cables and Related Technologies","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-04-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126970664","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since GPS/A observation on a moored buoy can be a solution to cope with these problems, an autonomous GPS/A observation system on a buoy is under development in preparation for a possible future application to the cabled ocean floor observation project DONET funded by the MEXT, Japan. A key point is reduction of power consumption. A low-power GPS receiver will take the place of three GPS receivers, and the acoustic ranging system will be replaced with a battery-driven compact system.","PeriodicalId":345403,"journal":{"name":"2007 Symposium on Underwater Technology and Workshop on Scientific Use of Submarine Cables and Related Technologies","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-04-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134550531","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a crucial step in fitting the derived models to experimental field data, a combination of dedicated experiments and least-squares estimation is applied in order to obtain an estimate of the sea current, and properly compensate for it during the identification stage. The established models are extensively cross-validated with uncorrelated data, which is a standard step in system identification to prevent over-fitting observed data. The vehicle response predicted by the proposed models shows good agreement with real measurements. The possible use of mathematical vehicle models includes control and navigation system design, applications to fault detection and integrity, and vehicle design evaluation. The content of this paper is motivated from the perspective of developing second generation underwater navigation systems, tightly integrating model-based velocity estimates and knowledge of commanded and measured actuator signals.","PeriodicalId":345403,"journal":{"name":"2007 Symposium on Underwater Technology and Workshop on Scientific Use of Submarine Cables and Related Technologies","volume":"491 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-04-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132898690","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A fiber optic 4-Component (4C) permanent seabed cable has been successfully demonstrated in the Gulf of Mexico. At SEG 2004 Maas et al [1] discussed a seabed optical cable for seismic applications, advances in the cable design and optical sensors, including a 3-axis optical accelerometer. Further work has now turned this system into a practical tool for 4C permanent reservoir monitoring, and the cable design and performance of the new system are reviewed. An 800 m cable with 4C sensor stations located every 50 m was tested along side a 4C cable with conventional electrical sensors. While the cable tested was limited in size, we have demonstrated the optical systems capabilities beyond 3000 m depth and with channel counts in excess of 2000 over 12 km in the lab. Data collected from the field tests have proven the prototype optical system meets the performance required of the deepwater permanent reservoir monitoring.","PeriodicalId":345403,"journal":{"name":"2007 Symposium on Underwater Technology and Workshop on Scientific Use of Submarine Cables and Related Technologies","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-04-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133399663","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Central idea of this new system is to utilize techniques underwater robot and seafloor platform to take measurements in place of using a research vessel. Combination of these two techniques make it possible to conduct the observation with selecting favorable condition of sea and GPS satellite distributions, to make much more frequent observations and to enable flexible planning of observation in response to sudden geodetic events. Trial model of the newly developing system was finished. The repetition of trial and error has begun through a number of the field experiments in order to bring the system to completion.","PeriodicalId":345403,"journal":{"name":"2007 Symposium on Underwater Technology and Workshop on Scientific Use of Submarine Cables and Related Technologies","volume":"198200 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-04-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132579033","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Moreover, results of earthquake recurrence cycle simulation show that the first ruptures seems to occurred around the Tonankai earthquake rupture zone in each recurrence cycle, and the clear segment boundary between the Tonankai and Nankai earthquake rupture zones off the Kii peninsula was analyzed using tsunami data. In 1854, 1944/46, the initial rupture were starting from the Tonankai seismogenic zone ahead of the Nankai seismogenic zone with intervals of 32 hours and 2years in each event. The simulation results of recurrence cycle is consisted with recent historical events in 1854,1944/46. Therefore, based on these researches, we will deploy the advanced ocean floor network around the Tonankai seismogenic zone to monitor the crustal activity, improve the recurrence cycle model and provide the high quality early warning information for the next mega-thrust earthquake.","PeriodicalId":345403,"journal":{"name":"2007 Symposium on Underwater Technology and Workshop on Scientific Use of Submarine Cables and Related Technologies","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-04-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127760397","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The length-to-diameter ratio of the bare-hull version of the underwater vehicle models was in a range of 8.5 to 12.5. The coupled sway-yaw motion for pure yaw manoeuvres resulted in sway amplitudes of up to about six diameters, maximum yaw angles of about 15 degrees, and, a maximum turning rate of 17 deg/s. This behavior is termed \"Doppler-shift compensation\" and is an important behavioral adaptation for echolocating bats. In this study, we present the evidence for another compensation mechanism of echolocating bats, in which pulse intensity is adjusted in relation to the distance to a target resulting in maintenance of a constant intensity of the echo. Our custom-made telemetry microphone (Telemike) mounted on the back of the bat allowed us to observe not only the emitted pulses, but also the returning echoes which the flying bat actually listened to. The signal characteristics of pulse-echo pairs were analyzed combining with a high-speed video camera system as a bat flying toward the wall on which a landing mesh was attached in the flight chamber. We found that pulse intensity in bats intending to land exhibited a marked decrease by approximately 30 dB within 2 m of distance from the target wall, and the mean reduction rate was 6.5 dB per halving of distance. In contrast, the intensity of echoes returning from the target wall at the head of the flying bat indicated a nearly constant intensity while approaching the target wall. These findings provide direct evidence that bats are supposed to adjust pulse intensity to compensate for changes in echo intensity to maintain a constant intensity within the range necessary for optimal signal processing (echo-intensity compensation).","PeriodicalId":345403,"journal":{"name":"2007 Symposium on Underwater Technology and Workshop on Scientific Use of Submarine Cables and Related Technologies","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-04-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128470492","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
