This data-driven technology is an essential complement to query-driven approaches such as LEO, helping to ensure acceptable performance during slow learning periods. CORDS focuses on column pairs because this greatly simplifies the algorithms, and experiments have shown that the marginal benefit of capturing n-way dependencies for n > 2 is relatively small.","PeriodicalId":345031,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Autonomic Computing, 2004. AC seeks to solve this problem through increased automation, relieving system administrators of many burdensome activities. However, the AC strategy of managing complexity through automation runs the risk of making management harder. We performed field studies of current administrator work practices to inform the design of AC in order to ensure that it simplifies system management. In this paper, we analyze what system administrators do in terms of three important activities: rehearsal and planning, maintaining situation awareness, and managing multitasking, interruptions and diversions. We provide guidelines for constructing AC environments that support these activities.","PeriodicalId":345031,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Autonomic Computing, 2004. These approaches are currently two of the most active research fields in the information technology area. After three years, many common themes came out: while autonomic computing research is focused on providing ways to define \"self-surviving\" systems, the semantic Web struggles to define Web content semantics producing complex and distributed services on the Internet. In a sense, the first area approaches systems defining the \"internal, operational knowledge\", while the second defines the knowledge about the environment into which software entities and humans should cohabit. This paper lies in the convergence of the two approaches and proposes an agent-based system able to semantically characterize and search a set of Web resources, and to maintain and update its knowledge base by means of monitoring sensors and interaction with external Web services. First experimental results confirm the validity of the combined approach in terms of search recall, thanks to autonomous update of covered topics.","PeriodicalId":345031,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Autonomic Computing, 2004. However, the vision of spray computers may also act as a powerful metaphor for a range of other scenarios that are already under formation. These include distributed applications in embedded, possibly mobile, ad hoc networks, as well as distributed service- and data-oriented activities on the Internet. In fact, besides the different physical scale of the components involved and of their interactions (from microcomputers interacting within networks extending across a few meters, to Internet hosts interacting at a world-wide scale), all of these types of networks raise the same challenges for application development and deployment.","PeriodicalId":345031,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Autonomic Computing, 2004. These environments must, thus, be self-managing and autonomic systems, receiving only high-level guidance from users. However, these environments are also highly dynamic $the context and resources available in these environments can change rapidly. They are also prone to failures - one or more entities can fail due to variety of reasons. The dynamic and fault-prone nature of these environments poses major challenges to their autonomic operation. In this paper we present a paradigm for the operation of pervasive computing environments that is based on goal specification and STRIPS-based planning. Users as well as application developers can describe tasks to be performed in terms of abstract goals and a planning framework decides how these goals are to be achieved. This paradigm helps improve the fault-tolerance, adaptability, ease of programming and usability of these environments. We have developed and used a prototype planning system within our pervasive computing system, Gaia.","PeriodicalId":345031,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Autonomic Computing, 2004. In response, visionaries have begun proposing that computer systems be imbued with the ability to configure themselves, diagnose failures, and ultimately repair themselves in response to these failures. However, despite convincing arguments that such a shift would be desirable, as of yet there has been little concrete progress made towards this goal. We view these problems as fundamentally machine learning challenges. Hence, we define and study learning-based methods for addressing the problems of packet routing and CPU scheduling in (simulated) computer networks. Our experimental results verify that methods using machine learning outperform heuristic and hand-coded approaches on an example network designed to capture many of the complexities that exist in real systems.","PeriodicalId":345031,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Autonomic Computing, 2004. We have implemented a Backdoors prototype in the FreeBSD kernel using Myrinet NICs for remote access to the target machine. In a previous paper, we have shown how Backdoors can be used for recovery of \"good\" OS and application state from a failed system on other healthy systems. In this paper, we describe how Backdoors can be used to detect and repair damage to the OS state of a computer system. We present two case studies of remote repair of an OS subject to resource depletion (fork bomb and memory hog) to the point where it cannot perform useful work and local repair is impossible. We show that our prototype detects OS resource exhaustion efficiently and it successfully repairs the affected system.","PeriodicalId":345031,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Autonomic Computing, 2004. The cache is allocated among the LUs approximately according to their relative I/O rates. In the case of nonuniform I/O rates and sensitivity to storage response times between differing applications in a storage area network (SAN), undesirable cache interference between LUs can result in unacceptable storage performance for some LUs. This paper describes SANBoost, a SAN-level caching approach that can be enabled selectively on a per-LU basis to provide a performance isolation mechanism for response time metrics related to storage quality of service (QoS). SANBoost automates hot data detection and migration processes in block-level storage. The design consists of a migration module implemented in a fabric-based SAN virtualization appliance and a solid-state disk (SSD) that acts as a cache resource within the same SAN. Simulation results quantify the impact of a specific static SANBoost caching policy on the SPC-1 benchmark workload and address the relative impact of adapting a threshold in the placement algorithm.","PeriodicalId":345031,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Autonomic Computing, 2004. Emergence science describes how higher-level self-regulatory behaviour arises in natural systems from many participants following simple rule-sets. Emergence advocates simple communication models, autonomy and independence, enhancing robustness and self-stabilization. High-quality distributed applications such as autonomic systems must satisfy the appropriate nonfunctional requirements which include scalability, efficiency, robustness, low-latency and stability. However the traditional design of distributed applications, especially in terms of the communication strategies employed, can introduce compromises between these characteristics. This paper discusses ways in which emergence science can be applied to distributed computing, avoiding some of the compromises associated with traditionally-designed applications. To demonstrate the effectiveness of this paradigm, an emergent election algorithm is described and its performance evaluated. The design incorporates nondeterministic behaviour. The resulting algorithm has very low communication complexity, and is simultaneously very stable, scalable and robust.","PeriodicalId":345031,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Autonomic Computing, 2004.
