The reasons are many: the utility of planning in business applications was unclear, the planners used to work best in small domains and there was no general purpose planning and execution infrastructure widely available. Much has changed lately. Compelling applications have emerged, e.g., computing systems have become so complex that the IT industry recognizes the necessity of deliberative methods to make these systems self-configuring, self-healing, self-optimizing and self-protecting. Planning has seen an upsurge in the last decade with new planners that are orders of magnitude faster than before and are able to scale this performance to complex domains, e.g., those with metric and temporal constraints. However, planning and execution infrastructure is still tightly tied to a specific application which can have its own idiosyncrasies. In this paper, we fill the infrastructural gap by providing a domain independent planning and execution environment that is implemented in the ABLE agent building toolkit, and demonstrate its ability to solve practical business applications. The planning-enabled ABLE is publicly available and is being used to solve a variety of planning applications in IBM including the self-management/autonomic computing scenarios.","PeriodicalId":345031,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Autonomic Computing, 2004. A non-intrusive monitoring and diagnosis module is employed by an application adaptation module that automatically chooses optimal component implementations for different execution contexts. Our work investigates how to wrap existing applications transparently to generate such management components. Developing manageable components requires some mechanism to support adaptation in behavior. The predominant mechanism for implementing adaptation in object-oriented software is behavioral reflection, which can be used to modify how an object responds to a message. The audio-streaming application (ASA) is designed to deliver interactive audio from a microphone at one network node to multiple receiving nodes.","PeriodicalId":345031,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Autonomic Computing, 2004. However, supporting these context-aware self-managing applications in widely distributed, heterogeneous and highly dynamic Grid environments requires suitable and effective coordination middleware services. The article presents the architecture and operation of Rudder, a rule-based adaptive multi-agent infrastructure for supporting autonomic applications in pervasive Grid environments. Specifically, Rudder enables dynamic composition and coordination of autonomic components to manage changing application requirements and system context. The design builds on three basic concepts: (1) software agents that dynamically define, deploy and execute rules to achieve self-behaviors, operating within flexible organizational structures while being situated in the dynamic pervasive Grid environments; (2) composition rules dynamically enabling application workflows, which can be executed using autonomic components; (3) a decentralized reactive tuple-space can scalably support agent coordination, execution of composition rules and creation of application workflows in Grid environments. The operation of Rudder is illustrated using an autonomic oil reservoir optimization application.","PeriodicalId":345031,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Autonomic Computing, 2004. Negotiation is a vital component that facilitates the market-oriented grid. Negotiating agents play an indispensable role within the market-oriented grid. Thus, performance management becomes difficult and expensive when carried out by human beings. An approach, called self-managing computer systems, is to build into the systems the mechanisms required to self-adjust configuration parameters so that the quality of service requirements of the system are constantly met. In this paper, we evaluate the robustness of such methods when the workload exhibits high variability in terms of the interarrival time and service times of requests. Another contribution of this paper is the assessment of the use of workload forecasting techniques in the design of QoS controllers.","PeriodicalId":345031,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Autonomic Computing, 2004. Also, as such systems increase in size and complexity, maintaining the desired QoS by manually tuning the numerous performance-related parameters will become very difficult. This paper addresses the design of self-optimizing computer systems using a generic online control framework in which the control actions governing the operation of the system are obtained by optimizing its behavior, as forecast by a mathematical model, over a limited time horizon. As a specific application of this control technique, we show how to minimize the power consumed by a single computer processing a time-varying workload. Assuming a processor capable of operating at multiple frequencies, we design an online controller to satisfy the QoS requirements of the workload while operating the processor at the lowest possible frequency. We describe the processor model, formulate the power management problem, and derive the online control algorithm. The performance of the controller is evaluated using representative e-commerce workloads. Finally, we discuss how the proposed technique can be applied to other resource management problems in computer systems.","PeriodicalId":345031,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Autonomic Computing, 2004.
