Since these ecosystems are influenced by both natural and human factors it is important to study their roles as carbon sources and sinks in order to reach “peak carbon emissions” and “carbon neutrality” goals. This review provides a systematic summary of research in this area and explores the deficiencies in current research approaches by addressing common carbon flux accounting methods and mainstream carbon cycle measurement models. Natural and human factors that affect the functions of farmland ecosystems as sinks and sources of carbon are discussed and prospects for addressing existing problems and suggestions for future directions are presented. The factors affecting carbon sources and sinks in farmland ecosystem have great heterogeneity and complexity due to differences in management practices and natural conditions with the former being more important. However, due to differences in assessment models and accounting methods, there is still great uncertainty in the assessment of carbon sources and sinks in farmland ecosystems. Therefore, more emphasis is needed on the optimization of models and the improvement of accounting methods in the future. This review provides a comprehensive reference for further study on carbon sources and sinks of farmland ecosystems, rational adjustment of farmland management measures, and strategies for the reduction of agricultural non-point source pollution.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":34479,"journal":{"name":"Resources Environment and Sustainability","volume":"11 ","pages":"Article 100099"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41378604","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Domestic wastewater treatment based on conventional sanitation concept is the most common approach, which is neither ecological nor economical sound to realize sustainable sanitation solution. Therefore, there is a need to block the sanitation-linked concerns and limitations of the conventional systems through the development of an alternative sustainable sanitation systems. With the rising demand to improve the existing sanitation system for environmental protection and resources conservation (energy, nutrient, and water), ecological sanitation approach appealed the attention of scientific communities. This paper presents the comprehensive review of domestic wastewater characteristics, conventional sanitation systems and its sustainability challenges; ecological sanitation technologies, process conditions and their performances in terms of resource recovery efficiency (i.e. biogas, struvite-based nutrients and clean water). The outcome of these approaches are resource oriented and closed-loop systems, which promotes the sustainable sanitation by overwhelmed the limitations of conventional systems. Moreover, the application of these technologies to treat domestic wastewater also helps to improve public health by reducing the introduction of disease causing pathogens in to the water cycle and minimizes the negative environmental impacts. Accordingly, the applications of ecological sanitation technologies to treat domestic wastewater would be a viable option to solve the existing sanitation problems; and simultaneously promoting energy–food–water–health nexus, especially in developing country.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":34479,"journal":{"name":"Resources Environment and Sustainability","volume":"11 ","pages":"Article 100095"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43927049","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In addition, following the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the present study noted that climate change is likely to have many effects on the spatial and temporal distribution of malaria in many Sub-Saharan African countries. This study examines climate change effects on the geographical distribution of malaria occurrence and how extreme climatic events may perhaps be determining factors in the range of vectors for human diseases in SSA in the nearest future. Here, the study appraisals the symbiotic connection of (1) malaria transmission and association with the changes in temperature, rainfall, and humidity as well as their extremes in SSA and (2) the relationship between climate and malaria with the role of climate change in determining upsurge in malaria and meningitis occurrences in the SSA. The study concludes that major drivers of malaria occurrence are climatic elements such as precipitation and temperature. To decrease the emissions from buildings, more energy-efficient technologies must be implemented. Drivers for the implementation of energy-efficient technologies are important to achieve this. Interviews were conducted with different actors within a city district development project to find drivers for the implementation of energy-efficient technologies in buildings. These drivers were connected to different phases of a building project to see when they have the highest potential impact. Connecting drivers to various phases of the construction process has not been explored before. In conclusion, drivers have the most impact during the Planning Program phase and the Project Planning phase. The most mentioned drivers are Cost reduction from lowered energy use, More knowledge within the building industry both stated by ten of 18 respondents, Long-term perspective at client, and National requirements and client demands both stated by eight of 18 respondents. The most prominent driver seems to be economic gains, and LCC calculations for showing potential economic gains are therefore a very important tool. Education with a subsequent certification on working with energy-efficient technologies and building techniques can be a driver and would also combat the lack of knowledge within the business. In-house knowledge at the client, Long-term perspective at the client, and Client demands are three great drivers. Clients in building projects should therefore aim to have good in-house knowledge, and a long-term perspective to be able to set the right requirements and drive for energy-efficient technologies.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":34479,"journal":{"name":"Resources Environment and Sustainability","volume":"10 ","pages":"Article 100078"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2666916122000287/pdfft?md5=3a775747b5c3dd7a719fc3a3e6c04914&pid=1-s2.0-S2666916122000287-main.pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44043037","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
