However, it becomes difficult to generate transformative architecture when the user is seen as a bank of ergonomic data and space is understood as mere geographical coordinates. This results in the construction of spaces that are separate from existential depth, where the user is not actively involved in any of the design process, which affects his will, interests, and values. This also prevents interaction between different types of knowledge that arises from these spaces. Through this horizontal interaction, it is possible to obtain architectural design that transforms its context. Digital ethnography is a methodology that raises questions related to the practices of everyday life through a flexible and multilevel scheme where the virtual space reveals the social practices of a community, freeing up the space and scope of architecture and connecting lay with expert knowledge.","PeriodicalId":344521,"journal":{"name":"Conference Proceedings of the Academy for Design Innovation Management","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128589268","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Committed to critically and transformationally engage with progressive socio-economic and political problems, the activist designer creates forms and situations within social processes. By mapping the fields of knowledge and concepts on which design activism draws, the paper attempts to bring an understanding of what informs Design Activism actions beyond the neoliberal paradigm. Drawing on the emerging discussions on design activism, the paper brings together articulations of design activism from scholars and design collectives to foreground the foundation for a more coherent understanding of design activism and a constructive dialogue within its community.","PeriodicalId":344521,"journal":{"name":"Conference Proceedings of the Academy for Design Innovation Management","volume":"54 1-2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116601875","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Applying a design process while working in teams during social innovation projects also requires certain ‘inner values’. Schön (1983) suggested reflection as a way to improve professional practice by challenging and changing the underlying value system. Various literature identifies different inner values, which are considered important for teamwork during design for social innovation (DfSI), however this is not systematic, evidence-based research. This paper presents such a study conducted in this context. \u0000Firstly, this study presents a review of key literature, which leads to a list of inner values considered important by authors for DfSI. Secondly, a survey method collected quantitative and qualitative data from 29 expert design practitioners who reflected on their teamwork experience during DfSI. The survey showed that most experts apply the list of inner values from literature, yet their understanding demonstrates a variety of interpretation and application, leading to more questions than answers and revealing the complexity of DfSI. The survey also found that whilst many inner values play an important role, the trade-off between them is essential, requiring wisdom and balance by the designer.","PeriodicalId":344521,"journal":{"name":"Conference Proceedings of the Academy for Design Innovation Management","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121067893","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite the evolution of Industrial Design over the past years, design research has been widely criticized for its groundlessness. In 2009, we proposed theoretical frameworks to overcome the absence of specific foundations to support empirical research in design semiotics. Funded by Whirlpool Latin America in partnership with Fapemig (2010-2012), such frameworks were built on ethnographic methods and had their assumptions empirically tested. The results showed that carrying out theoretical and empirical research simultaneously is epistemologically effective. In 2013, a theoretical-empirical phase started, yet several issues remain unclear. Some theoretical advancements have been achieved, such as The Trefoil Model, but now there is a need to face further questions, such as: How to cope with evidence in field research within design semiotics? The framework is developed from the results of interviews with three manufacturing firms that have begun the servitization journey. The selected companies have traditionally been involved in goods production, and have recently started engaging with services in different ways. The readiness framework attempts to bridge the previous studies and models offering companies a self-assessment tool based on the service implementation readiness measured along nine dimensions that apply to manufacturing firms to adopt a more customer-centric approach that fits into their company and suits their needs. Trying new practices and experiencing alternative configurations of socio-material assemblages can increase reflexivity as well as assist in exploring potential futures. Design can assist in co-creating possible futures and bridging discussions about the preferred strategies to reach them. If sustainability is defined as an on-going process calling for dialogue, there could be potentials for using practice-based design research, and in particular co-design approaches, at the intersections of these dialogues. By analysing methods for reflexivity and collaboration in two design research projects within sustainable mobility, we here suggest design strategies for prototyping change at an individual level and communicating the experiences of such change to people with power to trigger and direct change. This may be particularly useful for addressing sustainability which both requires dealing with complex problems and extensive collaboration.","PeriodicalId":344521,"journal":{"name":"Conference Proceedings of the Academy for Design Innovation Management","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126444404","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This method is developed based on the Value Design method. The value design method consists of a workshop process and a set of generative research tools to support the value creation process. By analysing the workshop process, results from the end user value creating process, the stakeholder value creating process and the encounter process, this paper demonstrates how designers can use such a co-creation process together with the created generative research tools to enable the value creation for the purpose of adopting the PSS approach by the stakeholders and the end users. It presents a revision to the discourse on the nature of and relationship between Design and other disciplines. \u0000This paper advocates a new para-disciplinary term for the post-disciplinary state of Design in its contemporary practices, acting as the ‘inter-discipline’ within organisations that are intent on the strategic development of their innovation capacity and potential. The work builds on a synthesis of findings from a longitudinal range of practice-based design research projects undertaken across industry and the third sector over the last four years. Case studies of these projects demonstrate that the involvement of Design has resulted in successive levels of influence leading to the radical transformation of the organisations’ innovation strategies. The implication for the generic aspect of these findings are discussed in terms of inter-disciplinary discourses.","PeriodicalId":344521,"journal":{"name":"Conference Proceedings of the Academy for Design Innovation Management","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128493869","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this hopefully thought-provoking position paper, we use a comprehensive review of literature and industrial practice in gradually building strong arguments that bio-inspired design is a possible pathway to achieve this. This approach is directly inspired by nature, given that it is nature that ultimately will suggest novel ways to conserve biodiversity and provide human beings with a sustainable lifestyle.
