This optimizes the probability of error of the receiver's detector in the high signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) regime, thus solving a nonlinear non-smooth optimization problem using an iterative method that exploits the Riemannian geometry imposed by the power constraints on the space-time codewords. Computer simulations demonstrate that, for the low SNR regime, our codebooks are marginally better than those provided by state-of-art known solutions. However, for the medium and high SNR regimes, our method provides codes that outperform other known codes.","PeriodicalId":344018,"journal":{"name":"2009 6th International Symposium on Wireless Communication Systems","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115266921","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Compared to CP-OFDM, FBMC can provide a higher information bit rate, since it operates without the addition of a CP. Furthermore, FBMC enables the use of different pulse shapes therefore, it can provide a better frequency localization than CP-OFDM. Since FBMC is based on real orthogonality, the association with MIMO techniques needs specific decoding schemes. In this paper we consider the combination of FBMC with a single delay Space Time Trellis Code (STTC). We propose an iterative decoding based on interference estimation and cancelation which does not require any channel coding or decoding block. We show that if we omit the CP loss of CP-OFDM and by using this FBMC decoding scheme we outperform CP-OFDM in single delay STTC context, this with only a slight increase in complexity.","PeriodicalId":344018,"journal":{"name":"2009 6th International Symposium on Wireless Communication Systems","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128348772","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although multicast allows bandwidth saving, it prevents a precise link adaptation over radio links. Indeed, users are subject to the same bitrate despite their different and variable radio conditions. Neither operators nor 3GPP standard offer solutions to support link adaptation in a multicast scenario. In this context, we propose different solutions. We compare conservative and aggressive schemes by computing the resulting throughput performance. For this purpose, we propose a model to compute the average number of retransmissions. We also study the mapping between the reported SNR and the packet sizes in HSDPA systems. We show that the existing mapping offers the best performance for unicast but cuts down the throughput in a multicast scenario. Then, we propose a convenient mapping for multicast, namely shifted mapping. Despite the better precision of this solution, the resulting gain remains marginal.","PeriodicalId":344018,"journal":{"name":"2009 6th International Symposium on Wireless Communication Systems","volume":"66 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114872752","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This simultaneous transmission to multiple users is realizable only if BS knows the forward channels linking its transmitting antennas to these users which requires channel feedback from these users. This feedback overhead could be prohibitively large especially in large user systems, limiting the multi-user transmission gains. Exploiting the channel reciprocity in a time-division duplexed (TDD) broadcast channel, we give a simple transmission strategy, where users feedback independent of their channel realizations. We analyze the sum rate of this multi-user system when the channel acquisition load is completely accounted for. We derive a novel lower bound of the sum rate which allows us to optimize over how many users should inform the BS about their channel information, solving the intriguing trade-off of multiuser diversity, interference cancellation and feedback overhead.","PeriodicalId":344018,"journal":{"name":"2009 6th International Symposium on Wireless Communication Systems","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127605256","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This demand leads to the development of mechanisms that enable the transference of service sessions between networks, seamlessly to the user. These mechanisms allow the operator to jointly manage its networks resources, providing a better service to its customers and, simultaneously, increasing its revenue. Starting from the UMTS and WLAN interconnection architecture defined by 3GPP, this paper presents a new strategy for joint radio resource management, suitable for contexts where these networks are interconnected. This strategy bases its decisions on criteria related to user mobility characteristics. The algorithm also introduces the possibility of renegotiating new calls and reallocating running calls from one access network to another. The new radio resource management strategy is compared with two well-known strategies, the former based on coverage area and the later based on load balancing. The comparison studies show the proposed strategy outperforms the other strategies in what concerns call blocking probability and applications QoS support. Besides, the proposed strategy tends to reduce the handoffs between networks.","PeriodicalId":344018,"journal":{"name":"2009 6th International Symposium on Wireless Communication Systems","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121194737","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Service differentiation is needed to support applications with different Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. In this paper, we propose a novel cross-layer framework that provides efficient communication and service differentiation in multi-radio multichannel WMNs. The proposed solution includes a distributed channel allocation scheme, integrated in the routing protocol, and a multi-channel MAC protocol, inspired to the IEEE 802.11e EDCA (Enhanced Distributed Channel Access). At the MAC layer, we propose “fast-forwarding” mechanisms to reduce the contention delay of delay-sensitive applications in multi-hop topologies. At the network layer, the channel allocation scheme aims at loading channels with an equal number of per-class traffic flows. The simulation results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed scheme in providing differentiated treatment to traffic classes with different QoS requirements.","PeriodicalId":344018,"journal":{"name":"2009 6th International Symposium on Wireless Communication Systems","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130778664","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This research focuses on an intermittent receiver-driven data transmission (IRDT) protocol in which communication starts when multiple receiver nodes transmit their own IDs intermittently and a sender node receives them. This method aims at prolonging network life time under the conditions that data-generating frequency is comparatively small. In this paper, we clarify the performance characteristics of this method by comparing it with the low power listing (LPL) method, which is a sender-driven protocol. By simulation, we show that IRDT can result in a higher reduction of energy consumption than LPL, especially at small loads. We also propose an improved IRDT scheme. While all nodes have equal and constant intermittent intervals in the original IRDT, the improved IRDT changes each node's intermittent intervals adaptively. This achieves more than 98% packet collection ratio and 50% lower power consumption than adaptive LPL, which also sets the intermittent interval adaptively.","PeriodicalId":344018,"journal":{"name":"2009 6th International Symposium on Wireless Communication Systems","volume":"284 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132233647","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Numerical investigations show that the out-of-band distortion components are dependent on the bandwidth and clipped level of the envelope signal of the input signal to the transmitter power amplifier. Based on this dependency, the bandwidth and clipped level are appropriately set in order to suppress the out-of-band distortion components. When the envelope bandwidth is restricted to 60% at the output backoff of 4 dB, the out-of-band distortion components are suppressed by more than approximately 30 dB.","PeriodicalId":344018,"journal":{"name":"2009 6th International Symposium on Wireless Communication Systems","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130510469","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
