In this paper a new cross-layer architecture for TCP splitting is proposed in the return link of geostationary satellite networks to improve the TCP performance. This new cross-layer architecture defines the interactions between layers to coordinate the TCP splitters taking into account the real-time cross-layer information. This feedback information is sent from the Return Channel Satellite Terminal to the feeder Performance Enhancement Proxy using the Simple Network Management Protocol. A complete analysis of our proposed cross-layer architecture has been carried out using NS-2 simulator to compare it with the standard TCP splitting. The simulation results show that our proposal notably reduces the transfer times for short lived connections. Moreover, it is observed that sudden variations of capacity in the return satellite channel are perfectly tracked by this new cross-layer architecture and not by the standard TCP splitting.","PeriodicalId":344018,"journal":{"name":"2009 6th International Symposium on Wireless Communication Systems","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-10-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130900895","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In cluster based wireless sensor networks, the energy could be saved when the nodes in a cluster that have data to transmit participate in cooperative Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO). In this paper, by making the idle nodes, that have no data to transmit, participate in the cooperative MIMO it is found that much more energy could be saved. The number of the idle nodes that participate in the cooperative MIMO can be optimized to minimize the total energy consumption. It is also found that the optimal number of all the nodes participating in cooperative communication does not vary with the number of nodes that have data to transmit in the cluster. The proposition is proved mathematically. The influence of long-haul distance and modulation constellation size on the total energy consumption is investigated in this paper as well.","PeriodicalId":344018,"journal":{"name":"2009 6th International Symposium on Wireless Communication Systems","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125198325","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A cluster-tree network can reduce multi-hop delay by limiting hop counts. However, the network suffers from bottleneck at a network sink node and it limits data throughput. Also, hidden terminals bring packet collision issues when using CSMA/CA. In this paper, spread spectrum multiple access (SSMA) employing multicode reception and CSMA/CA are combined as a new MAC protocol for solving the issues. A carrier sense method after despreading and a double-spreading code assignment method for the network are also proposed for improving the performance. Throughput and data delivery ratio for the proposed method are analyzed via simulations based on the IEEE 802.15.4/ZigBee. Simulation results show that the throughput is remarkably improved and the bottleneck at a network coordinator is mitigated with the proposed method.","PeriodicalId":344018,"journal":{"name":"2009 6th International Symposium on Wireless Communication Systems","volume":"103 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120975830","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In a block-by-block based transmission, by inserting the cyclic prefix (CP) between each data block, the inter-block interference (IBI) can be ignored and the Toeplitz channel matrix can be expressed as an equivalent circulant channel matrix. With this feature, we propose a simple signal model, in which only a vector formed adaptive filter needs to be trained in the frequency domain. Based on the new signal model, an adaptive block conjugate gradient (BCG) algorithm is developed. Complexity analysis shows that the proposed BCG algorithm is significantly simpler than the recursive least squares (RLS) algorithm. The bit-error rate (BER) performance of the proposed scheme is compared with the least-mean-square (LMS) and RLS algorithm in a number of scenarios and the simulation results show fast convergence speed and excellent performance of the proposed BCG algorithm.","PeriodicalId":344018,"journal":{"name":"2009 6th International Symposium on Wireless Communication Systems","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124858846","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We consider the basic radio link topology, where only one fixed relay station is used for the amplification. In this case, the envelope of the signal received over the overall multipath channel is modeled by the so-called double Hoyt fading process. Considering this multipath propagation channel model, analytical expressions for the first and second order statistics are provided. Specifically, the mean value, variance, probability density function (PDF), level-crossing rate (LCR), and average duration of fades (ADF) of double Hoyt processes are derived. In addition, an expression for the PDF of the corresponding channel phase is also provided. Since the double Rayleigh fading channel is a special case of the double Hoyt model, it will be shown how the derived expressions can be reduced to the results known for the double Rayleigh fading channel. Moreover, the validity of the derived quantities is confirmed by computer simulations.","PeriodicalId":344018,"journal":{"name":"2009 6th International Symposium on Wireless Communication Systems","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124934094","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To determine the required fade margins for different outage probabilities and different soft handoff scenarios, the Manhattan-like street pattern is considered. Since the analysis presented here involves the comparison of propagation losses among two or more base stations due to macroscopic selection diversity used on the reverse link, the generally accepted two slope propagation model, includes a cross-correlated shadow fading component, which allows taking into consideration the dependence between two shadowing components affecting different propagation paths, since they could experience many of the same obstructions in the path profile as has been observed in field test. From numerical evaluations, it is observed that the shadowing cross-correlation is determinant in the accuracy of handoff analysis and some suggestions regarding the fade margins are proposed for planning CDMA based microcellular systems in Manhattan environments.","PeriodicalId":344018,"journal":{"name":"2009 6th International Symposium on Wireless Communication Systems","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124993722","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the first ones only considered the most common networks at that time: wired networks. Thus, these models could not predict the behavior of a network that included wireless links. Also, different Link Layer protocols had to be considered, resulting in different modifications of the former throughput prediction models. During our research on TCP Models, we have found an interesting modification including ARQ, which is one of our objects of study. Also, this modification proposed a new frame retransmission scheme, which could reduce the TCP segment loss probability in a wireless link. However, when we tried to use this modified model, some errors appeared. For instance, the equation to calculate the average frame retransmissions number did not consider all the error possibilities. Thus, we decided to make some corrections in order to use this model in future works. Based on the corrected model, new comparisons were made and new conclusions, different from the original ones, were achieved.","PeriodicalId":344018,"journal":{"name":"2009 6th International Symposium on Wireless Communication Systems","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129814358","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this work, we consider the QoS-provisioning RA problem at the downlink of a multicarrier system, where the total transmit power consumption is to be minimized. Two RA schemes, one employing Lagrange dual methods and a greedy primal recovery scheme, and the other heuristic with a three-step approach, are proposed under the same cross-layer framework, where power allocation, adaptive modulation and coding as well as retransmission protocols are jointly modeled. Though both suboptimal, the two schemes are advantageous for their low complexity and small amount of online computations required. Their performances are illustrated and compared based on simulation results. The work also provides a quantitative comparison on the two commonly used retransmission protocols, namely automatic repeat request (ARQ) and hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ).","PeriodicalId":344018,"journal":{"name":"2009 6th International Symposium on Wireless Communication Systems","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123838764","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
