Based upon the theory of DPSK modulation and a recently derived formula for the probability density function (PDF) of the differential phase between two Hoyt vectors contaminated by additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN), the bit error probability (BEP) for DPSK systems with noncoherent demodulation over Hoyt channels is analyzed. In the analysis, the correlation between adjacent bits is taken into account. The obtained theoretical results are fully validated first by reducing them to the corresponding known solutions for the Rayleigh fading distribution being a special case of the Hoyt distribution and second by comparing them with results obtained from computer simulations. The analysis of the BEP performance is illustrated by numerical examples given for the case of a mobile-to-mobile (M2M) Hoyt fading channel by considering various values of the fading channel characteristics and the system parameters. The specific technologies of DVB-H and UMTS/MBMS are taken into account for the modelling of technological parameters including energy consumption and frame loss. Energy consumption is important in a mobile context in order to maximize the possible service duration while frame loss must be considered in order to provide services with an acceptable quality of experience. The proposed strategies are based on two different functions: a ratio between the energy consumption and the frame loss along and a linear objective function. The two function are compared with functions based on only one parameter and against the theoretic frame loss and energy consumption. It consists in generating low-power electric fields at the surface of the human body for transmiting signals. Its physical (PHY) layer has several advantages over classical radio frequency (RF) PHY layers, e.g., IEEE 802.15.4, for body-area networks (BANs), like a better robustness to body shadowing and a greater energy efficiency. From the medium access control (MAC) point of view, BCC BAN networks are a sub-class of wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Because WSN nodes are battery-powered device with limited energy capacity, energy efficiency is a key requirement for many applications. A low power MAC protocol is one of the component that enables to fulfill such a requirement. However current solutions developed so far by the scientific community are solely targeting RF systems. The properties of the BCC PHY layer are such that using those solutions would lead to inefficient energy usage. Therefore we developed and present in this paper AdaMAC a new MAC protocol that takes into account the specific properties of the BCC PHY layer. The accuracy of estimated results depends on selected simulation parameters. In existing analysis on wireless sensor network, simple interference models are used in simulations, which only take interference signals from nodes in a particular range into account. Based on our research, it is shown that these interference models are not accurate enough for practical wireless sensor network applications analysis. To improve the simulation quality, a full interference model is proposed. Still, the possibility to make such delivery both possible and cost-efficient remains highly interesting for applications including, but not limited to, traffic data delivery, broadcasting of passenger-aimed informational video content. Currently, in-car information / entertainment systems suffer from a heavy limitation: they can only be fed by GPS navigation data (i.e. no realtime traffic status information) and by local multimedia content stored within the car (i.e. no live multimedia broadcasting). In this paper we present an implemented and tested Software Defined Radio technology which we developed bottom up from scratch, aimed at video and data distribution over low coherence time, Doppler effect affected, frequency selective, vehicular highway channels. For this purpose, we exploit the statistical properties of the power delay profile of the received signals to design a set of the templates to ensure the effective multipath energy capture at any time. We show that the frame-level timing offset acquisition can be transformed into an equivalent amplitude estimation problem which has a closed-form solution. Thus, utilizing the symbol-rate samples extracted by our templates and the ML principle, we obtain channel-dependent amplitude estimates and optimum timing offset estimates. The proposed scheme does not invoke any line search, and moreover, it only relies on symbol-rate samples, which greatly lowers the implementation complexity. For both types, appropriate performance indices are specified. The social optimum can be achieved distributively through price-taking behaviour, if prices are based on a terminal's fraction of the total power received. For a given price, a terminal can choose its optimal power fraction without knowing the choices made by others because this fraction directly determines its signal-to-interference ratio (SIR), and hence its performance. By contrast, other schemes produce “games” in which terminals' optimal choices depend on each other. A “decoupled” solution has important technological and “marketing” advantages. We consider WSNs consisting of two different types of nodes clusterheads and ordinary sensor nodes, randomly deployed over a sensing field. All devices are assumed to be stationary and have identical sensing capabilities. However, the clusterheads are more energetic and powerful in terms of processing and communication capabilities compared to sensor nodes. For such a network, finding minimum cost WSN problem is not a trivial one, since the distribution of the mixture of two different types of devices and the batteries with different initial energies in each type of device primarily determine the monetary cost of a WSN. Therefore, we formulated an optimization problem to minimize the monetary cost of a WSN for given coverage and lifetime requirements. Whereas on the encoder side simple randomized schemes based on linear codes suffice, the decoder is required to perform joint source-network decoding which is computationally expensive. Focusing on maximum a-posteriori decoders (or, in the case of continuous sources, conditional mean estimators), we show how to exploit (structural) knowledge about the network topology as well as the source correlations giving rise to an efficient decoder implementation (in some cases even with linear dependency on the number of nodes). In particular, we show how to statistically represent the overall system (including the packets) by a factor-graph on which the sum-product algorithm can be run.
