Methods: The observational cross-sectional study was done from 1 March 2021 to 31 August 2022 which included inborn babies whose weights were >1000 g within 48 h of life. MAC and CC were determined and receiver operating characteristic curves were plotted for determining the cut-offs to predict LBW. P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Amongst 884 live-born neonates included in the study (birthweight >1000 g), 159 (18%) were LBW. The mean birthweight, CC and MAC were 2920.12 ± 503.48 g, 11.39 ± 1.26 cm and 10.41 ± 1.02 cm, respectively. There was a strong positive correlation between CC (cm) and birthweight (g) (rho = 0.88, P < 0.001), MAC (cm) and birthweight (g) (rho = 0.89, P < 0.001) and between MAC (cm) and CC (cm) (rho = 0.86, P < 0.001). At a cut-off of ≤10.2 cm, CC predicted LBW with a sensitivity of 99% and a specificity of 97%. At a cut-off of ≤9.4 cm, MAC predicted LBW with a sensitivity of 98% and a specificity of 97%. Conclusion: The best-suggested cut-off for diagnosing LBW in the present study for CC and MAC was 10.2 cm and 9.4 cm, respectively. Amongst the two parameters, CC was found to be a better predictor with a sensitivity of 99% and a specificity of 97%.","PeriodicalId":34280,"journal":{"name":"Hamdan Medical Journal","volume":"27 23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135262974","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Materials and Methods: This study included a total of 125 participants, comprising new hypothyroid cases (n = 19), and known hypothyroid cases (n = 106). All anthropometric and biochemical parameters, triiodothyronine (T3), tetraiodothyronine or thyroxine (T4), thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and Vitamin D3 were estimated. Collected data were analysed using SPSS software and an appropriate statistical test was used to test the significance. Results: Serum Vitamin D levels were significantly lower in almost all the individuals who were either new or known cases of hypothyroidism except 3 enrolled individuals. The positive correlation was found between serum Vitamin D levels and thyroid hormones level including TSH (P < 0.006), T3 (P < 0.0001) and T4 (P < 0001). This shows that there is strong correlation between Vitamin D and thyroid hormones, where low levels of Vitamin D were noted in hypothyroidism. Conclusion: The evidence of the current study suggested that most of the hypothyroid individuals were having either deficiency or insufficiency of Vitamin D (106 deficient, 16 insufficient). Males and females’ hypothyroid individuals relationship with Vitamin D levels cannot be summarised which may need a further large study group to comment. Whatever be the levels of T3, T4 and TSH in hypothyroid patients, whether the patient is male or female, Vitamin D supplementation is recommended, which may help in improving their TSH levels as well.","PeriodicalId":34280,"journal":{"name":"Hamdan Medical Journal","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135263133","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In 2016, approximately 445,000 deaths occurred due to malaria, which is comparable to the numbers (446,000) from the previous year. We conducted this study with an aim to assess the community-level preparedness for protection against malaria in population of rural Nuh, Haryana. Materials and Methods: Our study was community-based and cross-sectional in design conducted for a duration of 4 months in the six villages under the subcentre Sangail, with household as a sampling unit, and study subjects were selected by randomised multistage sampling technique. A pre-tested, pre-designed, standardised questionnaire (close-ended response) was developed for data collection. The association between variables was considered significant if the P < 0.05. Results: In our study, the nets were hanged for the use amongst more than half of insecticidal-treated nets (ITNs) user households (56.7%). Further detailed observation of ITNs reflected that the majority of subjects have obtained the ITNs either from mass campaign or health centres, and nearly one-third of household nets (37.2%) had holes them. In particular, head of households with the age group of 18–29 years, joint type of family and households with lower socioeconomic status were less likely to be using ITNs in the present study. Conclusion: To provide all age ranges with an equal level of protection against malaria in populations who reside in malaria-endemic areas, the current study has underlined the need for constant monitoring of ITN use, provision of ITNs and ongoing awareness regarding the use of ITNs.","PeriodicalId":34280,"journal":{"name":"Hamdan Medical Journal","volume":"129 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135263521","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Accurate estimation of blood loss using a reliable clinical method shall guide the surgeons towards appropriate blood requisition and usage. This article reviews methods of blood loss estimation that could be used to measure blood loss during oral and maxillofacial surgery procedures. PubMed, Google Scholar and CINAHL databases were searched without a date limit. The phrases ‘estimation of blood loss’ and ‘blood loss in surgical procedures’ were used to search for articles estimating blood loss during surgeries. A total of 57 publications were searched and only 28 of them describing methods that could be used during oral and maxillofacial surgical procedures were included in this review. Different methods of blood loss estimation have been described. This review revealed scanty data on blood loss estimation during oral and maxillofacial surgeries. The available published articles are mostly estimations during obstetric and gynaecological operations. A combination of gravimetric and volumetric methods is the most common method used for the estimation of blood loss in oral maxillofacial surgery procedures. A combination of gravimetric and volumetric methods of blood loss estimation was found to be the most common method of blood loss estimation in oral and maxillofacial surgical procedures as opposed to other surgical specialities. Other methods such as colorimetric and mathematical methods may be more accurate but are not frequently used for routine clinical use likely due to the technicalities surrounding their use.","PeriodicalId":34280,"journal":{"name":"Hamdan Medical Journal","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135263528","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is very necessary and bears a key role in the management of orofacial tumours. Aims and Objectives: This study aimed to present the pattern of histologically diagnosed tumours of the orofacial region and those that were actually managed. Materials and Methods: Ethical approval was obtained from the ethics and research committee of Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital Sokoto. Case notes of patients managed on account of orofacial tumours were retrieved. Clinical information, including patients’ demographic, histological diagnosis, nature of the tumour and treatment status, were extracted. Data were analysed using SPSS version 25. Results: There were 88 (56.4%) males and 68 (43.6%) in the age range of 2–87 years with a mean ± standard deviation of 34.5 ± 16.7 years. Most of the patients presenting with the tumours were in the third decade. The majority of the diagnosed tumours in this study were benign 101(64.7%) with follicular ameloblastoma 22(21.8%) being the commonest, whereas moderately squamous cell carcinoma20(36.4%) constitutes the majority of the malignancies. Among all tumour cases seen, 93 (59.6%) were surgically treated, 25 (16.0%) cases were referred for chemoradiation and the remaining cases, 38 (24.4%) were not treated. Conclusion: Follicular ameloblastoma was the most common benign tumour diagnosed, whereas moderately differentiated squamous cell carcinoma was the most common malignancy. The majority of the tumours were treated surgically. The untreated cases were mainly due to financial constraints.","PeriodicalId":34280,"journal":{"name":"Hamdan Medical Journal","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135262967","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Patient Concerns: A 32-year-old female, presented with chief complaints of amenorrhea for one and a half months followed by bleeding per vaginum and lower abdominal pain for 15 days. Diagnosis: On ultrasound pelvis, there was evidence of heteroechoic collection in right adnexa with suspicious left tubal extrauterine gestational sac with yolk sac and fetal pole. Fetal heart rate was also present with surrounding collection and gestational sac. A radiological diagnosis of bilateral adnexal echogenic cyst likely teratoma with left ectopic tubal pregnancy was made. Interventions: In the present case, exploratory laparotomy followed by left salpingectomy with bilateral cystectomy was done. The treatment modality of a dermoid cyst depends upon the age of the patient. In the case of young individuals, surgeons prefer to remove the cyst only leaving behind the ovaries for hormonal benefits. Usually, cystectomy is not an emergency but sometimes due to its complications like rupture, torsion or infection medical advice is important. Outcomes: Rapid diagnosis and intervention led to improved prognosis for the patient before development of any torsion of the cyst or ruptured ectopic. Lessons: The present case highlights the challenge to clinicians and histopathologists to deal with the multiple coexisting pathologies. The clinician should have a high index of suspicion while working up a patient with acute pelvic pain.","PeriodicalId":34280,"journal":{"name":"Hamdan Medical Journal","volume":"129 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135263127","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is a parasitic twin in a diamniotic, monozygotic twin. It needs to be differentiated from teratoma, as the latter has malignant potential. Patient Concern: Here, we present a case of an 11-day-old infant presenting with mass abdomen since birth. Microscopic examination showed skin with adnexal structures, neural, respiratory, gastrointestinal tissue, cartilage, bone and ocular structures also identified, which showed normal histology with the same degree of maturation. Diagnosis: A diagnosis of FIF was reported based on the radiological which was confirmed on histopathology. Outcome: The patient is doing well post-surgery. Lessons: This case highlights the significance of radiological, clinical, intraoperative and pathological features that help distinguish the two conditions.","PeriodicalId":34280,"journal":{"name":"Hamdan Medical Journal","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135263312","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
