The model provides accurate distribution of potentials and surface current density generated by a dipole placed in the inner most ellipsoid. The dipole can be anywhere in any direction in the ellipsoid. Surface Laplacian data obtained from EEG measurements are fit to the surface current density from each of the models in a least squares sense for comparisons of the resulting dipole locations and orientations. The dipole location estimated from somatosensory evoked potentials is compared to the location of activation in functional MRI experiments using somatosensory stimulation.","PeriodicalId":342750,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 19th Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society. This instrument applies an alternate adequate current of two different frequencies through a pair of electrodes immersed in a cultured medium. It monitors, detects and quantifies the growth of microorganisms based on the measurement of the impedance across the two electrodes, from which medium conductivity and interface electrode impedance changes can be dissected out. The variation of these parameters are proportional to bacterial growth. They are processed by this computer controlled apparatus and displayed on a monitor showing bulk resistance and electrode impedance variations as time course events.","PeriodicalId":342750,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 19th Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society. Thus, an extension of the surgeon's vision would be a significant breakthrough. Multispectral and hyperspectral imaging techniques, along with associated algorithms and image processing methodologies have been developed by the military for detecting, classifying and identifying targets amid background clutter. Applying this technology to medicine will allow novel exploration of anatomy, physiology and pathology.","PeriodicalId":342750,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 19th Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society. Here gaze position is displayed simultaneously with the target and the subject learns either to superpose target and eye position feedback, or to position the gaze feedback target up to 9 deg off the target (eccentric fixation) which helps to keep the \"blind side\" in sight. Using this technique normal Ss confronted with H3-VRM as well as hemianopic patients minimize their deficit very fast and efficiently-faster than without 2ndVFB training.","PeriodicalId":342750,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 19th Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society. In applications like telemedicine, it is necessary to efficiently transmit the EP signals. Data compression has been widely used for other non-biomedical signals, such as speech coding and image compression. In this paper, we study and evaluate the performances of EP compression using two different methods. One is the differential pulse code modulation (DPCM) method, which is a waveform-based compression technique, the other is the adaptive orthogonal transform linear combiner (AOTLC), which is based on an explicit model of EP using orthogonal transform theory and an adaptive filter. Analysis and computer simulation show that the AOTLC can achieve a higher compression ratio than DPCM, and it also gives a robust performance for noise-contaminated EP signals. The criterion used for performance evaluation is the ability for the compressed EP to preserve the latency change information.","PeriodicalId":342750,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 19th Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society. Kinetic data were collected as nine spinal cord injured experienced wheelchair users propelled their wheelchairs with instrumented pushrims on a stationary dynamometer. The subjects pushed from rest to at least 1.8 meters/second (m/s) for 20 seconds. A paired t-test was used to determine significant differences between steady state propulsion and start-up propulsion. Significant increases (p<0.05) in Fx (horizontal force), Fy (vertical force), Mz (moment about the wheelchair wheel axis), and F (three-dimensional resultant force) were found between start-up and steady state propulsion. Steady state analysis of wheelchair biomechanics will underestimate the magnitudes of forces and moments at the pushrim. Investigation of wheelchair propulsion biomechanics as a risk for injury should include start-up kinetics.","PeriodicalId":342750,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 19th Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society. The footprint of the authors' cart/tripod was too large and the focal length of their lenses too long. 1. The best way to image emergency room patients is vertically, requiring a camera which can be rolled to the bedside of the patient and observe the patient from above much as a portable X-ray unit does. This requires a wide-angle lens on the camera; 25 mm seems roughly correct. 2. Support equipment such as computers and displays need to be completely portable and operate off battery power such as a hospital-certified uninterruptible power supply. 3. A potentially very important experiment would be to use 2 or more cameras where each camera would be sensitive in different parts of the infrared spectrum, for example, one camera in the 3-5 m band and another in the 8-12 m band. This experiment would be easy to conduct provided both cameras have comparable focal length lenses and one of the two has a zoom lens. Zoom is required because not all detectors have elements on the same spacing and thus, images will be at different scales even though the lenses may have the same focal length. If the images are taken from nearly the same view point, and with similar focal lengths, they may be registered using straightforward image registration algorithms. Once registered, each pixel may then be treated as a multispectral feature and pseudo-color may reveal significant features, which single-band imaging cannot see. Furthermore, statistical pattern recognition algorithms are quite mature for such data, and may find application in computer-aided diagnosis. 4. It is absolutely essential that a study of this nature, a person in the emergency room staff be intimately involved in the study. This person, be it nurse or physician, must be interested in and excited by the potential benefit of the new technology, to the point that he/she is willing to learn how to use the equipment, how to identify potential patients for the study, and willing to train others in its use and potential.","PeriodicalId":342750,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 19th Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society. We have tried to evaluate the feelings of a subject, namely the subjectivity evoked by odor stimulation. In this study, we have measured the EEG activity of a subject who was stimulated by an odor and we have objectively evaluated the influence of the odor stimulation by chaotic analysis and by frequency analysis. We could obtain the effect of odor stimulation even if the subject did not consciously smell the odor. The results showed that, in the favorite odor stimulation, the chaotic value of the EEG data decreased slowly, but that of the unfavorite odor stimulation dispersed quickly. We could measure the change in the feelings of the subject by odor stimulation, and we could predict the feelings of the subject by using several, more suitable explanatory variables selected from the physiological information.","PeriodicalId":342750,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 19th Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society. In this paper, a low cost and reliable method based on Multiple Scattering Theory and the use of a simple ionization chamber has been proposed. The energy is determined by measuring mass scattering power derived from the spatial distribution of a pencil beam in air, obtained from a broad electron beam. The pencil beam distribution is calculated by subtracting the dose distributions obtained from the lead sheets with and without an aperture in the center. The experimental results of this method have been shown to be in agreement with the conventional Rp and R/sub 50/ water phantom measurement techniques.","PeriodicalId":342750,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 19th Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society.
