At the moment, there are many techniques to accomplish this task, such as function points, use case points and COCOMO, but there is not much information available about how to use those techniques in non-waterfall software lifecycles such as iterative or spiral lifecycles projects. This paper shows the results obtained when applying a technique to estimate the effort of each construction iteration in software development projects that use iterative-incremental lifecycles. The results were obtained from software projects of a fourth-year course in Informatics. The technique proposes the use of Function Points and COCOMO II.","PeriodicalId":341929,"journal":{"name":"2006 13th Asia Pacific Software Engineering Conference (APSEC'06)","volume":"79 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126991007","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, designing an appropriate service interface is essential. In this paper, we aim to perform a comparative evaluation on three different approaches to service interface design, i.e. method-centric, message-centric and resource-centric. The evaluation is performed systematically based on a list of selected evaluation criteria. It is expected that the evaluation results may assist software architects to understand the differences between approaches and adopt the approaches wisely in the service interface design.","PeriodicalId":341929,"journal":{"name":"2006 13th Asia Pacific Software Engineering Conference (APSEC'06)","volume":"2016 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121534471","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The layered organization of software modules offers a number of benefits such as reusability, changeability and portability to those who are involved in the development and maintenance of such software systems. But in reality as the system evolves over time, rarely does the actual source code of the system conform to the conceptual horizontal layering of modules. This in turn results in a significant degradation of system maintainability. In order to re-factor such a system to improve its maintainability, it is very important to discover, analyze and measure violations of layered architecture pattern. In this paper we propose a technique to discover such violations in the source code and quantitatively measure the amount of non-conformance to the conceptual layering. The proposed approach evaluates the extent to which the module dependencies across layers violate the layered architecture pattern. In order to evaluate the accuracy of our approach, we have applied this technique to discover and analyze such violations to a set of open source applications and a proprietary business application by taking the help of domain experts wherever possible.","PeriodicalId":341929,"journal":{"name":"2006 13th Asia Pacific Software Engineering Conference (APSEC'06)","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132726217","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Monitoring changes that have major impact, however, is usually a very hard to complete because every engineer usually could not know entire source code in detail. In this paper, we propose our metric for source code updates based on component rank. Software components and their use-relation alter as development goes. The component rank also changes as a response to the changes of use-relation among components. We use the degree representing change of component rank as a metric of impact for a source code update in a development. We applied the metric to open source projects, and demonstrated that the metric is useful to know refactoring activities or important updates. We also discuss how the metric can contribute for process management.","PeriodicalId":341929,"journal":{"name":"2006 13th Asia Pacific Software Engineering Conference (APSEC'06)","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122724475","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The result is a series of changes made to the code and designs starting from an initial version. However, rarely do designs keep pace with the changes in code - rather they are often outdated with the first few releases. The problem is only compounded by the various design representations that together comprise the design (state diagrams, class diagrams etc.). This adversely affects development since it is best to begin the process of evolution with the latest design representation that is consistent with the code since it provides a high level view of the system that is easy to understand. Such evolutionary practices therefore present three main challenges from a development environment perspective: (1) Consistency amongst different design representations (2) Traceability of design into code and vice versa (3) Versioning of designs along with code to maintain a consistent view of the application evolution. Our research presents solutions to all three issues starting from a relational meta-model of development and design entities. We have already published results that showcase our solution to the first two problems - in this paper we present an algorithm to version design and code so that the developer always sees a consistent snapshot and prove that this algorithm satisfies the safety requirements of consistency. We also outline an architecture rooted in the layered SCM model to support our versioning scheme.","PeriodicalId":341929,"journal":{"name":"2006 13th Asia Pacific Software Engineering Conference (APSEC'06)","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132576106","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article proposes a value model and its representation language, VSDL (value-based service description language), of Web services, and an architecture of value-added service broker of dynamically composing Web services based on the value model. The value model defines a common model of diverse quality aspects of Web services. We also propose a value meta-model representing relationships among values. The value-added service broker provides value-based service selection, composition and assurance of services. To specify service interfaces with values, the VSDL extends the service interface descriptions of WSDL with the value model. Based on the VSDL, the value-added service broker generates process of composing services and generates WS-BPEL codes for composition. We implemented a prototype of value-added service broker and demonstrated the effusiveness with a case study using three dictionary services.","PeriodicalId":341929,"journal":{"name":"2006 13th Asia Pacific Software Engineering Conference (APSEC'06)","volume":"491 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132196936","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the framework, users define patterns using a pattern modeling language that is designed to describe software design patterns, and they can use the patterns as rules to evolve their model. In the framework, design model evolution takes place via two steps. The first step is a binding process of selecting a pattern and defining where and how to apply the pattern in the model. The second step is an automatic model transformation that actually evolves the model according to the binding information and the pattern rule. The pattern modeling language is defined in terms of a MOF-based role metamodel, and implemented using an existing modeling framework, EMF, and incorporated as a plugin to the Eclipse modeling environment. The model evolution process is also implemented as an Eclipse plugin. With these two plugins, we provide an integrated framework where defining and validating patterns, and model evolution based on patterns can take place in a single modeling environment.","PeriodicalId":341929,"journal":{"name":"2006 13th Asia Pacific Software Engineering Conference (APSEC'06)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116869152","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Twelve learning objectives are classified in a 2D Bloom framework and evaluated against the result of instructional implementation, demonstrating coherent linkage between objectives, instruction and assessment. Descriptive statistics show the coverage of cognitive apprenticeship and high degree of acceptance from students. Analysis of learning process profile also shows consistently expanding effects on various aspects of learners, especially on teamwork. Pedagogical improvement in terms of the time allocated to individual instruction activities is also polled.","PeriodicalId":341929,"journal":{"name":"2006 13th Asia Pacific Software Engineering Conference (APSEC'06)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125876126","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
