But duplications in models reduce models' maintainability and reusability. To address the problem, we should detect duplications first. As an initial step to address the problem, we propose an approach to detect duplications in sequence diagrams. With special preprocessing, we convert 2-dimensional sequence diagrams into a 1-dimensional array. Then we construct a suffix tree of the array. We revise the traditional construction algorithm of suffix trees by proposing a special algorithm to detect common prefixes of suffixes. The algorithm ensures that every duplication detected with the suffix tree can be extracted into a separate reusable sequence diagram. With the suffix tree, duplications are found as refactoring candidates. With tool support, the proposed approach has been applied to real industrial projects, and the evaluation results suggest that the approach is effective.","PeriodicalId":341929,"journal":{"name":"2006 13th Asia Pacific Software Engineering Conference (APSEC'06)","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129917988","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Typically, a developer employs an interactive process for fault localization. To accelerate this task, several approaches have been proposed to automate fault localization. In practice, testing-based fault localization (TBFL), which uses test information to locate faults, has become a research focus. However, experimental results reported in the literature showed that current automation of fault localization can only serve as a means to confirming the search space and prioritizing search sequences, not a substitute of the interactive fault localization process. In this paper, we propose an approach based on test information to support the entire interactive fault localization process. During this process, the information gathered from previous interaction steps can be used to provide the ranking of suspicious statements for the current interaction step. As a feasibility study of our approach, we performed an experiment on applying our approach together with some other TBFL approaches on the Siemens programs, which have been used in the literature. Our experimental results show the effectiveness of our approach.","PeriodicalId":341929,"journal":{"name":"2006 13th Asia Pacific Software Engineering Conference (APSEC'06)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128266880","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Inaccuracies in effort estimation of software projects early on in the SDLC continues to be a perennial problem. Typically, improved estimates for software projects are provided under circumstances where requirements engineering (RE) is completed. RE provides a key reference in the form of requirements for the estimation process. However, RE by itself may consume significant effort demanding the RE phase to be estimated as the first step in the SDLC. It is difficult to establish RE estimates, as RE usually has no tangible reference on which estimates can be based. This paper provides a practical estimation method for large and complex RE processes. We demonstrate using a case study snapshot in a large software organization that the method provides improved effort estimates for the RE process.","PeriodicalId":341929,"journal":{"name":"2006 13th Asia Pacific Software Engineering Conference (APSEC'06)","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122376269","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It provides us with variety of diagrams with rigorous syntax and semantics to build precise analysis models, design models, and implementation models for software development. Whereas this variety helps us to model the problem domain from various viewpoints, it makes it difficult to keep consistency between the models presented by different diagrams. This paper proposes a complementary modeling process to UML modeling, which makes it easy to keep consistency between heterogeneous UML models. The process is based on the use case driven approach and colored Petri net (CPN) formalism. The consistency is defined along the use case driven modeling process, using CPN formalism. The paper focuses on four major UML diagrams, among which the consistency is kept and assured. At the end of the process, we obtain four kinds of UML compatible CPN models, which can easily converted to the corresponding UML diagrams for further software development.","PeriodicalId":341929,"journal":{"name":"2006 13th Asia Pacific Software Engineering Conference (APSEC'06)","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117031201","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To assist the procedure and implementation of process improvement we provide a software process recovery method based on mining project enactment data. The goal of the method is to uncover the actual process used in order to provide input to improve the quality of a defined software process. The recovered model (or patterns) is at the same level of abstraction as the predefined process model. This provides an easy and clear way to identify the gap between the planned process model and the real enactment. We investigate the enactment of a defined software process from the view of understanding the appropriateness and fitness for purpose of the process model from the viewpoint of the project managers in the context of a small software development organization. We collected data from organizations and applied our method to a pilot case study. The main contribution of our work is to provide a software process model recovery method which supports software process change and improvement.","PeriodicalId":341929,"journal":{"name":"2006 13th Asia Pacific Software Engineering Conference (APSEC'06)","volume":"85 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134115963","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Development of the integrated HNS services requires implementation of the appliance components (with APIs) and the services, according to each home-network environment. There are various implementation standards such as DLNA, ECHONET, OSGi and Jinifor the HNS applications. Therefore, even if a developer can choose the optimal one, it's very difficult to develop the integrated services by composing a new HNS implementation. In this paper, we propose a model-driven development of integrated HNS service applications. In our former manuscript, platform-independent design language for verifying HNS service scenarios was proposed. Our model-driven development method uses this design language as a meta-model of integrated HNS services. By model transformation to concrete implementation together with verification by SMV (symbolic model checking), productivity and quality of this kind of HNS applications are improved.","PeriodicalId":341929,"journal":{"name":"2006 13th Asia Pacific Software Engineering Conference (APSEC'06)","volume":"127 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129705194","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Security issues are usually not addressed in academic setup and those attempt to make it as part of their software engineering curriculum realize quickly that it is difficult to make learning happen in a conventional lecture based approach. We explored a case study centered non-conventional approach and found it to be instrumental in bridging this gap between the industry and the academia. We give a detailed methodology for using the case study and our experience, observations and result of the approach. Whole case exercise aims at creating software professionals who realize the importance of security and are well versed with the related concepts, skills and dispositions and thus handle security related challenges in a structured manner.","PeriodicalId":341929,"journal":{"name":"2006 13th Asia Pacific Software Engineering Conference (APSEC'06)","volume":"179 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124463568","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

FTA incorporates idealized fault tolerant component concept and coordinated error recovery mechanism in the early system design phase. It can be reused in the high level model design of specific mission critical distributed systems with reliability requirements. The formal model of FTA in the Object-Z language is presented to provide precise idioms to the system designers. Formal proof using the Object-Z reasoning rules are constructed to demonstrate the fault tolerant properties of FTA. By analyzing the customization process, we also present a FTA template, expressed in x-frames using XVCL (XML-based variant configuration language) methodology, to automate the customization process. We apply a sales control system case study to illustrate the customization of FTA.","PeriodicalId":341929,"journal":{"name":"2006 13th Asia Pacific Software Engineering Conference (APSEC'06)","volume":"72 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127764598","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To manage and monitor the product acquisition process effectively according to a signed contract with a supplier, an organization has to define the standard of workflow, deliverable products in each step and staff roles and responsibilities, etc. Thus, there is a need to incorporate these diversified processes into a single process model that could helps to reach the software product acquisition goal. CMMI defines supplier agreement management process area (SAM) that relates to product acquisition but it does not describe how the organization should do to achieve its expectation. This research presents a business workflow process model for SAM process area of CMMI: capability level 2. It consists of three layers: contextual layer, elaboration layer, and definition layer. A software tool called supplier agreement management tool (SAMT) is also developed to help integrate the details of our approach and can be used for the proposed process model.","PeriodicalId":341929,"journal":{"name":"2006 13th Asia Pacific Software Engineering Conference (APSEC'06)","volume":"534 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116236522","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Design by contract practice is not widely accepted in the software industry for a variety of reasons. Most notably, there is little research that demonstrates the efficacy of design by contract practices. A yearlong experiment compared design by contract practices with more traditional defensive programming practices. Sixteen software development teams independently designed and constructed an industrial-strength project for Brocade Corporation. The experiment gathered productivity data on each team and metrics on their software artifacts. Detailed analyses were performed on the data to compare and contrast the performance of the teams.
