Measurements of the degree of complexity of a system are one technique for evaluating maintainability. However, conventional complexity metrics are unable to reflect the overall complexity of the system, because they do not incorporate a procedure to account for characteristics of CBS. To help maintenance work proceed smoothly, we propose a new metric that measures the coupling-based complexity of CBS by abstracting the target system's structure through a step-wise process and taking into consideration the characteristics of remote components. Our metric can be applied to CBS based on the Enterprise JavaBeans component architecture. As a result of experimental evaluations, it is found that our metric better reflects the maintainability than conventional metrics. It is also found that our metric is nonredundant with existing metrics such as coupling factor.","PeriodicalId":341929,"journal":{"name":"2006 13th Asia Pacific Software Engineering Conference (APSEC'06)","volume":"82 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134405187","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recent middleware research works widely use interception approach for many problem domains, for example fault tolerance, continuous audit {CA), security etc. Instead of providing a portable interceptor as CORBA does, SOAP 1.2 provides an intermediary mechanism. Due to backward compatibility issue, we found intermediary mechanism is not a feasible solution for interception. Furthermore, our use case analysis found that CORBA Portable Interceptor functionality does not fulfill all requirements of continuous audit. This motivates us to develop a new portable interceptor mechanism (PIM) on SOAP for CA. In this paper, we propose a PIM on SOAP to meet the interception requirements for Web services. Our PIM includes portable interceptor management in SOAP engine and portable interceptor interface definitions.","PeriodicalId":341929,"journal":{"name":"2006 13th Asia Pacific Software Engineering Conference (APSEC'06)","volume":"82 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124672913","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They may be later reused to reduce cost and time for the next development. Thus, there is a need to retrieve ones that meet user's need efficiently. This paper presents an approach for software requirements specification retrieval in a form of use case description using use case structure and similarity computation between terms of use case query and use cases in the collection. The contribution of the paper has five main points; 1) the approach for retrieving use case description is proposed, 2) the developed tool supporting the approach is presented, 3) the experiment is designed to measure effectiveness of the approach, 4) the results of the experiment are shown to compare effectiveness of the approach to that of a general approach, and finally 5) the recommended use case description query template is proposed.","PeriodicalId":341929,"journal":{"name":"2006 13th Asia Pacific Software Engineering Conference (APSEC'06)","volume":"150 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134139908","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This framework is discussed in terms of compatibility and substitutability checks of protocols. According to the optimistic approach, two protocols are compatible if they are composable and their composition leads to a usable protocol, that is a protocol such that there exists an environment ensuring safety and liveness property of the composed protocol, which is obtained by the composition of the involved protocol and that environment. Safety and liveness properties such as deadlock-freeness and proper termination of protocols are considered up to different extents. Based on that, we present two protocols compatibility relations related to the usability concept, together with two behavioural subtyping relations related to the principle of substitutability. We address their soundness by showing the existing link between compatibility and substitutability relations, which have found necessary when dealing with incremental design of protocols.","PeriodicalId":341929,"journal":{"name":"2006 13th Asia Pacific Software Engineering Conference (APSEC'06)","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133894888","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper we describe an approach for generating interoperability tests for networked media devices based on the universal plug and play (UPnP) AV architecture. Our approach is based on constructing formal models of the various entities as specified in the UPnP AV architecture and composing these to form a complete model for a test set-up (as given by the test engineer) and then generating tests from this complete model based on model coverage and well chosen test purposes. We illustrate this for an example test set-up. The tests that we generate are currently being used at our certification test lab. We believe that this approach can be used for similar testing activities in different domains.","PeriodicalId":341929,"journal":{"name":"2006 13th Asia Pacific Software Engineering Conference (APSEC'06)","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116557717","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Linux kernel is analyzed in terms of these common coupling instances and the results show the presence of excessive common coupling among modules. It is mentioned that unless the kernel is restructured with a bare minimum of common coupling, it would be exceedingly difficult to maintain kernel in the near future. We attribute this problem to the lack of data abstractions in the kernel. To support our argument, we have analyzed the cohesion in the Linux kernel both at the module level (file level) and function level. Although the cohesion at the function level is high, low cohesion prevails at the module level indicating the lack of focus on data abstractions at the module level. We believe that this is an inherent drawback in procedural paradigm where functionality is considered first rather than data. Hence, we suggest to migrate the kernel to object-oriented paradigm to minimize coupling among modules and increase cohesion within the modules. As performance is one of the prime concerns for an OS kernel, object oriented features can be introduced in the kernel in an incremental fashion using the technique of object-oriented wrappers.","PeriodicalId":341929,"journal":{"name":"2006 13th Asia Pacific Software Engineering Conference (APSEC'06)","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121385484","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, precise structural testing for components requires to specify what functions of the components are used in the system. In addition, in the case with an object-oriented component, some existing studies point out that testing of all possible bindings between a call site and the methods that the site may invoke is extremely ineffective. In this paper, we propose a method for precisely estimating test coverage of components on an object-oriented framework by using its deployment descriptor and evaluate its effectiveness.","PeriodicalId":341929,"journal":{"name":"2006 13th Asia Pacific Software Engineering Conference (APSEC'06)","volume":"152 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123784242","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this work, we propose a practical approach to develop these contracts for an object from its annotated structural representation, namely, UML constrained class diagram. We generate, simulate, and refine an object state-chart from an initial set of method contracts which in turn help further validating and enhancing these contracts. The impact of this analysis can be multifold: first, it identifies various discrepancies like incomplete and inconsistent class specifications, second, a correct and consistent object statechart model is obtained from which reliable automated code and unit tests can easily be generated, third, facilitate essential and effective verification for software re-use, forth, the resulting statechart and class specifications are in a lock-steps which facilitates effective incremental development and change management and fifth, it allows a modeler to specify object's dynamic requirements declaratively on an abstract level, without the need to use full operational dynamic diagrams. We have also designed a tool ObjectSim that performs automated statechart generation and their interactive simulations. We demonstrate our approach using an example and discuss other related issues.","PeriodicalId":341929,"journal":{"name":"2006 13th Asia Pacific Software Engineering Conference (APSEC'06)","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129776777","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Two such challenges are: (1) the need to formally examine the impact of system interactions on safety and (2) the need to extract and readily integrate knowledge from past accidents into new systems. We propose an approach which exploits knowledge from past accidents to conduct quantitative safety analysis using interactions between system components. A case study is presented that shows how our approach provides a support mechanism to safety and design experts. Further, it shows how we identify critical interactions and their contributions to accidents. This is especially important when components have not failed but instead undesirable interactions have contributed to an accident.","PeriodicalId":341929,"journal":{"name":"2006 13th Asia Pacific Software Engineering Conference (APSEC'06)","volume":"68 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130277912","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Generally, it is very difficult to manually find out valuable phenomena from huge data. Invisible context, which cannot be known directly from software documents or formal reports, is an important factor to these difficulties. We propose a new method to find contexts based on analysis to email archives in a project repository. In this method, we first apply natural language processing to extract keywords from email messages. Next, similarities among the messages are calculated based on the extracted keywords, and the messages are classified into clusters according to the similarities. The clustering result can be presented with other information such as code growth graph or schedule charts. This method is implemented as an extension to the Project Replayer, a tool to review past project data. Pilot analysis confirms that a researcher could grasp important contexts of failures in actual projects using the Project Replayer.","PeriodicalId":341929,"journal":{"name":"2006 13th Asia Pacific Software Engineering Conference (APSEC'06)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130649185","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
