To evaluate the impact, effectiveness, and usefulness of learning objects it is necessary a theoretically, reliable, and valid evaluation tool. This paper presents a cross-entropy metric to compare the design of LO that uses the information provided by visual fixations measured from a small focus group. The cross-entropy is measured on the test set to assess how accurate the entropy constancy rate principle is in predicting the test data. We conducted an experiment with children of elementary school (n=23). Results show that images with lower values of the proposed metric can be easily read (Mean = 0.746 min/image) than those LO composed of random images (Mean = 0.977 min/image). Hence, the metric is useful to optimize the fluency. This is an important step through the design of a fully automated tool to evaluate LO.","PeriodicalId":341198,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the XVIII International Conference on Human Computer Interaction","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-09-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115188431","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There are cognitive theories that say that problem solving teaching requires techniques based on the student's cognitive ability, linked to the type of problems or examples (when cognitive ability is low) that must work. This process requires automated tools to identify the characteristics of the students in order to provide more personalized teaching strategies and also manage feedback that helps the student and the teacher to identify their achievements. These types of automated tools are known as cognitive tutors, which are intelligent tutoring systems, with the particularity of being focused on providing individualized support to students to improve their complex cognitive skills, through problem-solving practice. On the other hand, it is considered that algebra, in addition to arithmetic, are the areas that serve as the basis for the understanding of many mathematical subjects. Therefore, in this thesis project a semi-automated tool is proposed, by means of which, the different modules of a cognitive tutor are implemented, following an instructional design for solving algebra problems, through the management of gamification and game strategies based on the techniques of computational theory of tangible user interfaces. For the student model module, a fuzzy model is used to detect and classify the student's cognitive ability. In modules of model of the domain and the tutor model, fuzzy cognitive maps are defined and implemented to determine, respectively, the activities related to the different types of problems related to various algebra topics and to determine the pedagogical activities that the student must follow in each of the stages of problem solving.","PeriodicalId":341198,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the XVIII International Conference on Human Computer Interaction","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-09-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116985678","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At the Universidad Autónoma de Occidente (UAO), Cali, Colombia, the HCI course is mandatory in the Multimedia Engineering program. The objective of the course is that students acquire, recognize and apply basic concepts and methodologies of analysis, design and implementation of HCI techniques for the development of interactive systems. Thus, the course offers students the knowledge and techniques so that they are able to obtain easy-to-use and easy-to-learn interactive systems. This paper presents the HCI course taught at the UAO and the analysis of the changes to be included in the course design, considering the teacher's experience and the trends in the discipline.","PeriodicalId":341198,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the XVIII International Conference on Human Computer Interaction","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-09-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123427031","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The development of such model is important because using students' traits to predict achievement and affective reactions in the use of the tutoring system may be a more economical solution than real time modeling both cognition and affect. The hypothesis of this research project is that it is possible to conceptualize a model that could be used to predict students' affect and cognitive achievement in the interaction with a tutoring system for mathematics. Preliminary results suggest that, at least when considering students' preferences, it is possible to observe tendencies in line with our research hypothesis. Future studies will use other theoretical constructs to make the proposed conceptual model more robust.","PeriodicalId":341198,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the XVIII International Conference on Human Computer Interaction","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-09-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123586926","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unfortunately, this type of communication is not accessible to blind people. Currently these people need assistance to be able to access their email in reading and writing. This paper presents an application for the reading, writing and sending of emails using voice as a mean of communication between the computer and the person, in the Spanish language. This application was evaluated by five people with visual impairment at the special education school \"Baltazar Maldonado Olvera\", in the community of San Andrés, in the municipality of Tzompantepec, Tlaxcala, México; obtaining very good results.","PeriodicalId":341198,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the XVIII International Conference on Human Computer Interaction","volume":"68 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-09-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125150467","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This means that many people are in high risk of social exclusion as they find themselves without access to key forms of communication such as writing and reading. Besides, this form of communication has become more relevant in relation to new technologies. This paper focuses on providing a tool for translating Spanish text into pictograms that aims to facilitate access to written information for people who cannot use natural language due to physical or mental disabilities. In order to improve the obtained translations we have used Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques. The evaluation of the system effectively confirms that obtained translations are not only accurate but closer to human-made translations than the ones obtained by a similar tool.","PeriodicalId":341198,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the XVIII International Conference on Human Computer Interaction","volume":"108 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-09-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127328408","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The procedure used a non-ISO Fitts' law task since targets were randomly positioned from trial to trial. Due to a non-constant amplitude within each sequence of trials, throughput was calculated using two methods of data aggregation: by sequence of trials using the mean amplitude and by common A-W conditions. For each data set, we used four methods for calculating throughput. The grand mean for throughput calculated using the division of means and the adjustment for accuracy was 0.74 bps, which is 45% lower than the value obtained using an ISO task. We recommend calculating throughput using the division of means (and not the slope reciprocal from the regression model) and with the adjustment for accuracy. We present design recommendation for non-ISO tasks: Keep amplitude and target width constant within each sequence of trials and use strategies to avoid or remove reaction time.","PeriodicalId":341198,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the XVIII International Conference on Human Computer Interaction","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-09-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127573421","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
