Phraseological units (PhU) nominating such a feature of the speakers’ behavior as alcohol consumption were chosen as the object of study. The sample consists of 47 English and 45 Ukrainian PhUs. The publication highlights the common and distinctive features of the corresponding fragments of the ethnocultural picture of the world of two unrelated ethnic groups. The linguocognitive aspect of the performed analysis made it possible to distinguish the subject-logical schemes of phraseological units of the corresponding semantics. The first scheme, among those verbalized in our sample, is the following: AGENT CONSUMES SOMETHING IN SOME WAY. It is most widely presented in the material. It verbalizes the component CONSUMES SOMETHING as drinks alcoholic beverages, verbalization is accompanied by a negative evaluative coloring (explicit, in the PhU itself or implicit, in the dictionary definition). The component SOMEHOW is clarified mainly in the interpretation of the relevant PhU (most often it is an accentuation of excessive alcohol consumption). The AGENT component is very sparingly nominated in the PhU; in the case of its explication, somatisms and units of the vestile vocabulary are mentioned. The subject-logical scheme AGENT ENCOURAGES PATIENT TO TAKE SOMETHING is verbalized in a very narrow range of PhUs that denote the act of making someone drink. The subject-logical scheme THE AGENT IS IN SOME PSYCHO-PHYSICAL STATE (as a result of consuming SOMETHING) is widely used in the researched material. By means of phraseological expressions it conveys the state of intoxication. The sample demonstrated the actualization of the container metaphor OUT OF your head, scull to verbalize the reduction of the intellectual potential of the agent in a state of intoxication. Phraseologisms also explain the agent’s inadequate physical behavior. The linguocultural aspect of the research revealed similar and different features of the practice of consuming alcoholic beverages by representatives of two unrelated ethnic groups: English and Ukrainian. This enabled a retrospective chronological dimension of the study of a certain fragment of two pictures of the world: the English and the Ukrainian ones.","PeriodicalId":34053,"journal":{"name":"Zapiski z romanogermans''koyi filologiyi","volume":"78 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135922925","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The relevance of the paper is determined by the fact that the priority direction of linguistic cognitivism is currently the study of verbalized concepts. Conceptualization as one of the main processes of human cognitive activity is aimed at understanding information in the person’s mind in order to reveal the content of concepts. The purpose of the article is an exhaustive definition of the verbal means of actualizing the theme of negation, compiling a list of defining features that actualize this negation in the verbalized field of the LAZINESS concept. In the paper, semes are considered to be the smallest components of the nominative field, it is emphasized that with the help of splitting the seme into its components, the detailed seme composition of a concept is formed and described. 456 definitions of 21 adjectives in 8 dictionaries have been analyzed. The data were subjected to further definitional analysis, which has demonstated the leading role of the semantic component of the denial of something, the absence of something. In the course of the research, a synonymous series of English lexemes, mainly adjectives united by the theme of lazy, was formed, luding the adjective lazy, as well as words that dictionaries define as its synonyms. The article analyzes the definitions of the lexical unit lazy in English-language specialized dictionaries; the seme analysis of the semantic parcel of negation as part of the nominative field of the verbalized concept of LAZINESS has been carried out. It has turned out that half of the analyzed dictionary definitions have in their composition the negation of a certain quality, state, action. This negation is verbalized by the particle not, the noun lack or participle lacking, the particle no, the preposition without, the prefixes in- and un-, the suffix -less, the prefix dis-, the adjective averse, the prefix ir-, the adverb less, the prefix non-, and the pronoun nothing. The article offers the quantitative representation of the negation seme in the definitions of adjectives-synonyms of the seme LAZY.","PeriodicalId":34053,"journal":{"name":"Zapiski z romanogermans''koyi filologiyi","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135923051","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recently, there has been fixed a tendency in grammar and in the methodology of teaching Spanish and French to consolidate the use of forms of certain moods and to avoid their variation, especially when presenting the opposition Subjuntivo / Indicativo in Spanish and Subjonctive / Indicatif in French. Nevertheless, more grammarians criticize this simplistic approach. Some of them consider it acceptable only in the initial level of learning Spanish and French. At level of more advanced learnings, taking into account not only the norm, but also the usage, there is a need for a detailed study of all components when varying moods of Spanish and French. This variation exists objectively and does not depend on the willingness or unwillingness of language researchers or methodologists to recognize it. The fact of ignoring of moods variation is called didactic myth (“mito didáctico”), and the excessive formal attachment to syntactic dependence when choosing modality forms is called formalistic blindness (“ceguera formalista”). At this stage of the research, the emphasis is on the analysis of whether the latest researches of scientists regarding the choice of moods are effective, namely operational and discursive hypothesis. And also, can it help to operate with the concepts of o informativeness (new for Subjuntivo and known for Indicativo); statement (assertion) for the Indicativo versus non statement (lack of assertion) for Subjuntivo ; solve the most difficult tasks of choosing the manner in contexts with multiple readings. The methodological base consists of general scientific methods: analysis, synthesis and generalization of information from historical sources and practical research of scientists in stylistics and rhetoric. The analysis revealed that stylistic devices, as an efficient and impactful way of expressing thoughts and influencing the audience, contributed to the emergence of such a science as stylistics. The main sources of stylistics were the national language, dialects, classical and modern literature, works of artists, and mass media. The theoretical basis for the development of stylistics was rhetoric, linguistics, psychology and logic. Stylistics can be broadly defined as the linguistic science of the means of expression and the regularities of the functioning of language, determined by the most appropriate use of language units in the text, depending on the content of the statement, goals, situation and sphere of communication. The article also considers the issue of classification of stylistic devices in modern domestic and foreign linguistics. Due to the diversity and multifacet nature of this issue in modern stylistics, there is a certain variety of approaches to the classification of stylistic devices. Depending on the focus of the analysis, researchers distinguish: lexical-grammatical, rhetorical, discursive-pragmatic, functional-stylistic classifications, as well as the classification of emotional language, stylistic figures and stylistic techniques. In the English-speaking tradition, stylistic devices are classified by the type of influence on the target audience: logos, pathos, ethos, and kairos. Another approach involves the division of rhetorical figures into 3 diverse groups: sound-related, order-related and meaning-related.","PeriodicalId":34053,"journal":{"name":"Zapiski z romanogermans''koyi filologiyi","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135923207","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Social and personal prosodic variation of Canadians’ English speech is in the focus of the investigation. Appeal to Canadian prosodic system can be explained by inadequate study of this variant of English and its prosodic features which can serve as markers of national identity of a speakers. The concept national identity is multiaspectual by its structure and is considered as multilevel system which includes ethnic, cultural, religions belonging as well as historical community of the territory. Language plays the leading role, it units members of the community into nation and provides it with those linguistic features, which consolidate the members, of one community and differentiates from the others. Investigation of prosodic characteristic of Canadian variant of English speakers of Alberta province in the present paper is conducted with the aim of revealing and describing a set of melodic and frequency characteristics, which can serve as markers of Canadians national identity. Canada is a county which language system has a bilingual character, its language is under the influence of British and American variants of English, considerable variation of language forms is connected with a great flow of immigrants to the country. All these factors resulted in the formation of Canadian English, which has its own individual prosodic system. Revealed in the process of complex auditory and computer analysis melodic and frequency characteristic allow to state the existence of definite features of Canadian prosodic system which can be markers of national identity. The relevance of the topic is determined by the fact that, despite the dominance of the Standardsprache on the territory of modern Germany, local dialects are also sufficiently widespread in it, which have recently gained more and more prestige, especially among young people. The purpose of this study is to analyze the linguistic features of southern German dialects (Bavarian and Swabian — Alemannic) and to identify their genetic links with the modern German language — Standarddeutsch / Standardsprache. Texts (artistic and newspaper) in the specified dialects and identical in Standarddeutsch, dialect maps (atlases) of the German language, ancient and modern dictionaries served as research material. The work uses descriptive and comparative-historical methods. The object of research is German southern dialects (Bavarian and Swabian — Alemannic). The subject of the study is the linguistic characteristics of southern German dialects and their connection with the modern German language. Using the example of the development of German dialects (Bavarian and Swabian-Alemannic) and their interaction with Standarddeutsch, it can be argued that the German language, based on the laws of linguistic synergy, is a complex open information system that is constantly developing, but at the same time preserves information about its former states, and the combination of past and present knowledge provides an opportunity to identify the future development prospects of the system. The results of the study make it possible to predict further changes in the modern German language at all its levels (phonetic, lexical, grammatical), taking into account various dialectological features that are introduced into the German language system. The obtained data on the evolutionary development of the German language and its dialects (Bavarian and Swabian — Alemannic) is of certain importance for the study and teaching of «History of the German Language», «Introduction to Germanic Philology», dialectology, as well as a practical course of the German language.","PeriodicalId":34053,"journal":{"name":"Zapiski z romanogermans''koyi filologiyi","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48205610","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Phraseologisms are an important layer of any language, which function both in colloquial and literary variants, filling with new meaning. Scientific achievements in the studied phraseology of individual languages give a reason to emphasize the presence of various universals in it, and from this it becomes possible to highlight the phenomena of general phraseology. It is from this point of view that this work examines the theoretical foundations of general phraseology as an integral part of the systems of individual languages. One of the sources of enrichment of the literary language with expressive and pictorial possibilities is the national idiomatic heritage, in particular, zoosemic phraseological units. The article examines the current state of developments in the field of modern philology regarding the concept of phraseologism, the peculiarities of the functioning of a phrase with a zoonym component based on the material of modern French, English, and Ukrainian languages. A comparative analysis of the variability of the formation and structural-semantic divergence of the studied units with the “cat” component proves that the inclusion of zoonyms in the phraseology testifies to the important role of animals in the general interpretive picture of the world, which is determined by the traditional model of the transfer of animal qualities to humans and vice versa. The conducted research is based, in particular, on the classification of factual material according to grammatical features, which allows one to clearly understand the similarities and differences in the formation of the corresponding phrases. The few works of domestic and foreign linguists in this field are mainly devoted to the general study of animalisms of all classes. However, they do not fully reflect the role of such representatives of the fauna as the cat in creating the linguistic identity of the nation. To date, there is a lack of comprehensive works that would trace the structural and semantic features of the functioning of zoonyms as part of phraseological units on the material of several languages, which proves the relevance of our research. It is devoted to the problem of figurative understanding and phraseological description of the processes (including causes and consequences) of CONSUMING food or drinks. The material considered by us offers the possibility of ethnocultural comparative analysis of two unrelated societies — Ukrainian-speaking and English-speaking ones. Based on A. Maslow’s thesis about the basic level of needs in the phylogenetic development of a person as a biological and social being, namely the need to quench hunger and thirst, the phraseological funds of both languages, which are focused on seeing exactly these needs, are considered. It has been proven that phraseological units (PhU) of gustatory semantics verbalize the deep cognitive model AGENT FEEDS THE PATIENT SOMEHOW and its mirror second half PATIENT CONSUMES SOMETHING (FOOD/DRINK) SOMEHOW. This publication highlights exactly this second half of the specified cognitive model. The purpose of this study was to investigate the phraseological fund of a language as certain clots of cultural heritage, cast into a figuratively transformed patterns of idioms, phraseological units, proverbs, sometimes maxims, i.e. prescriptions of ancestors, which they passed on to their descendants regarding the correct worldview and successful functioning in the surrounding world. The total sample is quantitatively distributed unevenly between the two languages, the English component is twice as small as the Ukrainian one: 117 English PhUs and 265 Ukrainian PhU. The semantic component CONSUMPTION is verbalized by 13 verbs in English and 28 in Ukrainian, which indicates a greater sensitivity of Ukrainian speakers to the semantic nuances of the process of consuming food and drinks (them being excessive or insufficient, approved or critically regarded by the speaker who nominates the phenomenon). It was found that the English-speaking sample is more focused on reflecting universal, philosophical aspects of life, while the Ukrainian sample is more “home-centric”, the state of hunger and thirst in the Ukrainian-speaking sample is reflected much more broadly and more emotionally than in the English-speaking sample, overeating is a frequent object of mockery and criticism of Ukrainians, which in no way coincides with the dominant code of political correctness in modern Western culture. The analyzed material testified to a certain role of alcoholic beverages in the lives of representatives of the two ethnic groups, both ethno-specific and cross-cultural customs and traditions were revealed, the presence of English-language PhUs regarding drug use was recorded, which is not observed in Ukrainian-speaking PhUs. Emotions play one of the main roles in the life of every person; show the inner state, emotional experiences, attitude towards the surrounding and other things. Negative emotions, in their turn, help to go through the horrific moments in life, as far as they are the reflection of everything unknown and uncertain, what the person can encounter during the lifetime. The most profound and vivid representations of the emotional sphere of obscure and strange are given in works of fiction. Namely in thrillers the atmosphere of unknown and incomprehensible is represented fully and thoroughly, because the main aim of these novels is to surprise the reader, to cause negative and terrific feelings. The purpose of this thesis is to denote means of creation of terrific and obscure atmosphere in thrillers. Based on the analysis it was determined that the main means of the achieving the goal, which lies in the intimidation of the reader and the unexpected ending of the novel, are different stylistic means and devices, such as epithet, metaphor, antithesis, personification. They intensify the effect of the reading of the novel, present the bright picture in the reader’s imagination. The general atmosphere also plays an important role in the establishing of the necessary emotional state. Its creation is accomplished with the help of the general terrific images, descriptions of the outer world, constant remindings about the battle between good and evil, light and darkness. The triumph of the light is always determined in the semantics of lexemes with positive meaning, with the help of which the hope for the better future is represented.
