A productive organization needs a workforce that is of the right size, is competent and is well‐motivated. Production/operations managers need to understand the tools and techniques at their disposal to create such a workforce. It needs to adopt the techniques of other industries in measuring the quality of its services and the satisfaction of its customers. This paper reports on a study of educational institutes in India in terms of how well they meet the needs of local industrial customers. It involves the use of quality function deployment, and a range of statistical techniques, to design and analyze a questionnaire which results in a clear demonstration of a lack of satisfaction. The analysis also identifies those factors which should be specifically addressed to improve quality and customer satisfaction.","PeriodicalId":340241,"journal":{"name":"Work Study","volume":"90 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134162272","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Too much trust can impact negatively on performance. Uses empirical research involving 142 members of 28 teams to identify factors that relate to this optimal level of trust, and those factors that demonstrate undesirable behaviors. In order to maximize team performance, teams must exhibit critical enquiry and constructive criticism in addition to a supportive understanding.","PeriodicalId":340241,"journal":{"name":"Work Study","volume":"33 1-2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116720316","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The approach to modelling these joints requires the use of powerful FE packages as well as significant skill and knowledge on behalf of the FE analyst in order to model accurately both the material and adhesive characteristics. This paper develops a methodology for employing the Taguchi experimental design technique to aid the FE analyst in identifying the factors that directly affect joint performance. An approach is developed which integrates experimental design and FE analysis.","PeriodicalId":340241,"journal":{"name":"Work Study","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114588508","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These, in turn, require technology to capture, codify, store, disseminate and reuse the knowledge. Successful deployment of KM is not a simple process. This paper suggests that a major reason for the failure of many KM projects is the absence of a well‐defined strategic plan to guide implementation. This paper discusses the strategic planning needs of the KM deployment process, and develops a framework that could be used specifically by engineering firms to guide the KM implementation process.","PeriodicalId":340241,"journal":{"name":"Work Study","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120936872","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper suggests that technology may at last be able to provide the tools necessary for effective KM. More importantly, organisations are beginning to realise that key strategic advantage arises from the harvesting of tacit knowledge in addition to the more easily handled explicit knowledge. Together, tacit and explicit knowledge management can give rise to a corporate knowledge store – an organisational memory.","PeriodicalId":340241,"journal":{"name":"Work Study","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125008922","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This approach is inconsistent with emerging skill‐ or competency‐based compensations systems. Such systems only recognize and pay for the skill or competency required by the task to which an employee is assigned. As employers adopt skill‐based pay systems, it is reasonable to ask whether they will continue to use degrees and diplomas in their hiring and pay decisions. A shift away from the diploma as a criterion for hiring and pay decision may influence educational systems to offer both diplomas and skills acquisition programs.","PeriodicalId":340241,"journal":{"name":"Work Study","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121242473","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
